Marco Vargas is injured, unclear if it's the same issue that has limited him to 3 games and a previous IL stint
-Infielder/centerfielder Jett Williams, the Mets’ top prospect, went on the seven-day injured list with Double-A Binghamton because of a right wrist issue.
After he jammed it, sat out for a week and didn’t feel well enough to play, the Mets opted to officially sideline him. He might get a cortisone injection, and the Mets are inclined to take his return very slowly, given his importance to the organization.
Before getting hurt, Williams was off to a slow start at the plate, batting .180 with a .668 OPS. He also played several games at second base, his first professional exposure to that position, his potential eventual defensive home.
Saul Garcia (received a nice report from @BaseballAmerica before the season) has been activated from the 7 day IL. Garcia has stuck out 7 over 3.2 innings of work for @stluciemets. He figures to join @BKCyclones shortly
Not sure if posted, but De Los Santos also looks like he was promoted to AA. Wouldn't you know he stole a base as a PR.

If the Mets were ever actually good then he'd be a potential weapon as a pinch runner. Hit tool is below average (to be kind).
What do the Mets do? Do you hold back the arm to make sure the bat is ripe? If there's an MLB need and the arm is ready, then you likely don't hold him back. However, if the bat ends up profiling as legit, you might be temped to hold him back a few months to give a couple hundred extra ABs.
That's obviously supposed to read *walked 16%* of his AB's.
Didn't realize the K-rate was that high. For some reason I thought he was getting on a base a lot more. I think I'm guilty of just reading the updates when he (or other Mets prospects) have a big day and scrolling past the rest.
Quote:
very much is reliant on his arm. Adam Dunn struck out 16% of his AB's... at the MLB level with a 29% K rate, Nolan McLean posted an 8% bb rate and a *51.4%* k rate in A+, not a typo. He's a very, very impressive athlete but they aren't holding back a potential 3-4 SPer for a DH-only bat with monster power and monster k rates.

At one point about a week ago he had more home runs than singles. As it is he has 17 hits, 7 doubles, 5 homers, 7 singles, 6 walks, 38 k's over 71 ab's. It's incredible he's even been able to hold his own but something pretty remarkable would have to happen for him to be viewed as a legitimate MLB prospect with the bat.

Oh, Tommy John surgery, got it. Was thinking this was a trade.
"High-A Brooklyn: Three more promotions of note: the Mets sent fourth-ranked prospect Ryan Clifford, No. 13 Brandon Sproat and No. 19 Nolan McLean from Brooklyn to Binghamton earlier this month. Clifford earned the bump despite a lackluster batting line at Brooklyn, while McLean also has plenty left to prove as a two-way player. Scouts continue to paint McLean as a far stronger prospect as a pitcher than a hitter, which could eventually force the Mets’ hand. As for Sproat, he’s been dominant with a caveat of his own: a walk rate that must come down if he’s to make good on his frontline potential.

of course that would come out day after i used their list. explains why some of their team rankings were wonky (they had 2 #8's yesterday).

Jeremy Rodriguez did crack the list at 100. I sorted for top 100 but for some reason that only gave 99 names? List actually has 107 players ranked not 100. That's my bad but also the site seems messed up at the moment.

honestly their prospect rankings have seemed to fall behind in terms of depth/quality generally (imo).
if you go by the board they still have hamel/vasil #6/#7 in the system ahead of acuna and clifford/vargas not ranked anywhere.
i think it's because they havent done a full profile of the mets system this year, just the "imminent big leaguers" post on the guys in the upper minors. I assume J-Rod only got a rerank because he is top 100. their coverage this year has definitely been more disjointed than i can ever recall.
agreed. i should have used kiley's list. these were his grades back in february, so i would assume acuna/clifford may have notched down to 45's in his midseason update if they dont improve, and j-rod will probably notch up to 50. he had baez as his breakout guy so he's probably also up to at least 45.

acuna = 28m
clifford = 28m
vargas = 8m
j-rod = 6m
hernandez = 2m
plus or minus however he valued jarvis/jackson/taylor/houser.
some of those values have probably shifted, but my guess is it's pretty similar today (j-rod up, vargas up, acuna and/or clifford maybe down).
honestly 2 months in, moving guys up and down is probably over done.
there are some guys who show obvious leaps that are justifiable for re-assessment, like showing you can play stateside at 17 after DSL. but guys like clifford and acuna, it's hard to tell what is just noise. who knows if teams are asking them to change specific approach type things knowing it may impact their performance in the short term. much easier to identify guys doing well than assess how far back players are falling.
Great stuff Eric!!!

You have to wonder when Tong gets bumped up. He doesn’t seem to have much left to prove in Brooklyn.

Jonah Tong has allowed 1 hit over 5 innings of work. He hasn’t walked a batter and has struck out 64 pitches/44 strikes. His era with @BKCyclones now sits at a tidy 1.53 #Mets

I doubt anytime soon. He's pitched 12.2 total innings in Brooklyn walking 9 and has already pitched more innings in 2024 than he did in his entire career combined. Big on Jonah Tong but he hasn't been "he should skip Brooklyn" good command wise.

it is indeed Kade Morris's BK debut. The Mets are high on him.
It's hard to say. The same way Brooklyn suppresses homers for hitters, the same can be said for the pitchers. Double edged sword.
