His performance as a soph was pretty solid, has a strong arm, great size and is fairly mobile for his size. Doesn’t throw well on the move but a classic pocket passer.
they aren’t thrilled with him. PSU QBs are measured by wins against Ohio State, Michigan, Michigan State, etc. Padding stats against all the easy wins they schedule doesn’t cut it.
25 tds 2 ints. Define terrible. Also played against Ole Miss, Ohio
St, Michigan and Iowa.
The TD/INT is good, but the completion percentage and Y/A is not good for a college QB playing for a program as good as Penn State is. Just about every top D he faced he was sub 50% completion percentage. Even when they were winning, 6 for 13 for 79 yards against Rutgers won't cut it let alone how awful he looked against Ole Miss, Ohio State, Michigan. Iowa he had a good completion percentage and 4 TD's but only 166 yards on 37 passes.
I watched a lot of Allar this year as a Penn State alum.
He didn't even look like an NFL back-up. He was very, very bad. Inaccurate, tentative. Maybe a light-bulb will turn on, but he was significantly worse than Hackenberg, who I thought was very overrated when he came out. Penn State's best QB of the last 20 years is still Michael Robinsion, the future NFL fullback, followed by McSorley, and then Clifford was decent.
Allar may have potential but he has to work on his accuracy.
He seems to be off on his throws. He does not lead his receivers, which forces them to extend and contort for the ball, they take unnecessary hits, and they are not able to obtain YAC.
His footwork and timing need work. It is possible that he can clean this up. He has time lets see what next year brings.

I referenced him the other day and was told, "no way." I didn't watch Penn State last year so I can't comment.
C’mon man. You don’t need to watch any games to have an opinion on a player. Just having a game on in the background qualifies you as “studying film” around these parts. We have some of the best talent evaluators in right here in this very forum! Some can even tell which players will be busts by studying film for two pre-season drives. We are blessed. 😇
He's obviously still young, but anyone who endured that performance justifiably thinks the guy stinks on ice.
You guys are hilarious. I guess you are an oenn state fan and he is condemned for eternity for one game against an elite team. Caleb crapped the bed on national tv against Notre dame, he was the #1 pick in the draft lol
Penn state alum here. Used to be at all the games til little man was born. Anyhow, I'm not saying he sucks, but he is a disappointment. He plays very conservative. Having a shit line and no wrs hasn't helped, but I can't think of a single game where he has played exceptional. Not even against fodder teams. Our history with five star qbs suck. Hackenberg, morelli, and now Allar
I do not watch Penn State, but I watched a lot of film breakdowns to show Theo Johnson.
The point of showing a lot plays were to show great body maneuvers from Johnson to make catches.
Almost all of his catches he was stretching or jumping for ball, which was great to see from him.
However, Johnson is 6ft 6in tall with 33in arms and a 39.5 inch vertical. Its crazy to me that a man of his size would need to jump up and fully stretch out to catch a ball. He is very big target to miss that badly on. Plus you see a bunch of film were it seems like Aller doesnt even see him open.
There was enough video there to show a ton of red flags in the QB

He hasn't shown anything special yet, that could all change this year though. I don't expect that, but it could happen.

He wasn't good against any good team. For comparison, as a sophomore McCarthy was 12 for 24 for 263 yards and 3 TDs against Ohio State.
Why? Did you see Penn State’s passing game last year?

Thx for the objective response. I am not sure how good your WRs were (I can’t even name one) but if the OL sucked and he still put up 25-2 including against 4 powerhouse as a SOPHOMORE, I don’t think that’s entirely awful. His physical attributes are legit.
Will he improve from only his second year in college football? He can actually throw the ball on the run, he's just not Josh Allen in that regard.
The bottom line is, he just has to prove it on the field. He made a lot of inaccurate throws and bad decisions last year, but again, just his sophomore season.
Put Allar's name right at the top. Even when you discount that he's a PSU QB, not exactly QB Univ for the NFL, he's awful. Could he turn into a decent college QB? I hope so for PSU fans. As a possible NFL QB prospect, OMG no. Makes JJ McCarthy look like Pat Mahomes.
who are Penn States WRs... What round did they get drafted in? I don't remember. Their best WR is going to Auburn. This was his first year starting and he didn't turn over the ball. that should account for something. It will be curious to see what he does, but my goodness man... transfer out. The team doesn't give you players to help and the fans hate you. Got to LSU or Ohio State and be a star.
He came in with very high hopes as a freshman being either a 5 or 4 star recruit out of high school depending on the scout. Was the #1 QB recruit in the 22 class. Last year was ranked 25 in top QBs in the country. He has all the physical tools you want in a QB. Size, armstrength, mobility etc. He just didn’t look all that impressive to me. They’ve been talking about him being a future top draft pick/franchise QB. I just haven’t seen it yet.
In fairness their offense as a whole hasn’t been great. They’ve been praising Allen & Singleton like they’re 2 of the best RBs in the nation and they haven’t looked that special to me either. They haven’t had a lot of receiving weapons for Allar.
But he’s only a sophomore and last year was his first full year starting so I’m not going to destroy him. Hopefully he takes a big step forward this year. He sure has the ability to do so. But I need to see it first.
The kid has excellent size, a big arm, and he is pretty athletic. So, he has the physical tools.
But just watch him play. At times it's been painful. He will go long stretches struggling with accuracy and decision making. Just check out his play in the Michigan, Ohio State and Ole Miss games last year. If he was standing on the bow of a Circle Line cruise, Allar would miss hitting the Hudson.
The positive is he hasn't been turnover prone. If he can maintain that and learn how to really the position, Allar will be an interesting prospect. But we are quite a distance away from that
SOME Penn State fans (far from all) are down on Allar
Like any fan base there are various opinions…and many uneducated ones. Allar played a bit as a freshman and looked good. His second year was marred by an AWFUL receiving corps that couldn’t stretch the field at all or get open short. This also affected Penn State’s backfield…arguably the best in college football.
The offensive coordinator was fired for his unimaginative game plans by mid season. They didn’t do Allar any favors by overemphasizing conservative play and not throwing picks. Although not throwing INTs is generally positive it was easy to see he was thinking too much. That eventually bit Penn State when they played more competitive opponents.
Bottom line…he’s very talented and the fans killing the kid don’t understand the game and situation he played in last year. Unfortunately it might not get better this year despite a new coordinator unless the WRs can stretch the field.
saw the game against Ohio State where he was abysmal. A decent game from the QB and they could've won that game.
The QB position is massively unpredictable. It's possible that the guy could become a great QB. But if you're asking why - if people watched a PSU game, that was probably the one and he looked terrible in that game.

How about that? Including awful WRs and bad offensive game plans, others have noted an awful OL. Yet the fans blame the QB only. lol
The lazy approach is always “the QB sucks” because it’s the most visible position.
The PSU backfield is very talented. Both backs went backwards last season. It’s not a coincidence. But mouth breathers blame Allar. Could he have maybe played better at times? Sure. But to say he “sucks” is a dumb and lazy take.
I saw an early mock yesterday where the former GM of the Falcons . had us taking Carson Beck at #8.
St, Michigan and Iowa.
