Top 5 teams in the NFL with players earning at least $5M per year (draft picks included)
1. Panthers- 18
2. Eagles & Jets- 17
4. Giants& Texans- 16
Teams with the fewest are the Chargers with 8 and the Raiders, Cowboys, Packers, and Bucs all with 9. |
not sure who nyg #16 is but i think 15 of them are jones, thomas, lawrence, burns, okereke, waller, thibodeaux, slayton, singletary, runyan, eluemanor, neal, gano, nabers, lock. nacho is making $4m and banks is $3.4m. all obviously draft picks or paid by current FO.
quick count i think carolina added 7 of their 18 this offseason and 3 others were draft picks. for a team that was awful last year they could have a swing the other way this year.
Oops. Now I see him on your list.
i agree. their OL is massive and massively experienced now. corbett is their only OL under 320 and he's at center.
diontae johnson and thielen are both crafty, mingo/leggette are both freakish athletes.
im not a big sanders fan but brooks, penny, hubbard give them some depth.
their defense lacks exciting impact players but they have experience everywhere. tuttle, ashawn, brown is a solid front. wonnum and clowney are experienced ends. horn, hill, fuller, jackson, woods experienced too. the DC is held in pretty high regard.
that looks like a roster that could push towards .500.
The additional 5 or so contracts that are closer to that 5m/yr (except Okereke 10m - good value and Runyan 10m - not great value but necessary) are due to door drafting/development. Good teams have 2nd/3rd day draft picks being paid much less filling out their OL etc...
i think the list needs some context layering. jets (o/u 9.5 wins), houston (9.5 wins), philly (10.5 wins) all have pretty loaded rosters.
like i mentioned Carolina added almost half their list this offseason so we don't know what that team is yet, i think they could have one of the bigger win increases this year. They won 2 last year, Vegas expects around 5 wins, I could see them get to 7 or 8.
had carolina not added diontae, hunt, lewis, wonnum, clowney, etc i would not think that so they are on the list mostly because they spent freely in FA (which can be risky, but i think they spent relatively smartly for where they are).
giants don't fit neatly into either group, id contend that they should closer to being a loaded roster if not for last year's OL disaster. but part of that would have been the luxury of not needing to spend as much on the OL this offseason and fortifying other positions. and waller not having been a bust, etc.
Paying players on a year to year basis is not the problem. Paying the wrong players over an extended period of time is.
The Giants were lucky enough to draft a few players under the last regime at absolutely critical positions - OT and IDL. They paid both. Rightfully so.
The other larger contracts do not inhibit this team long term whatsoever, besides Daniel Jones. It's the only blemish from this regime when it comes to contracts given.
Counting how maybe over 5m yearly players is truly a frivolous exercise.

not really if you take it for what it is - how many players who are paid above average on a given roster (255m cap / 53 players = 4.8m per player). generally the players paid above average are done so expecting them to play above average.
i havent seen any comments about it as a reflection of cap health because that's an entirely different point. everyone knows guaranteed money, structure, etc are a big part of that.
