Veteran pass rushers at DT/edge. We need some juice there. I'm fine with the CB battle after he Long signing and I guess we are fine with nelson as swing T/Thomas backup. No traditional FB yet, Jakob Johnson still out there too
I don't see them going with a traditional FB versus moving a TE into the backfield as the TE gives more ability to go with the passing game. Most teams don't use the traditional FB anymore.
He's Kenny Golladay with a better attitude. Low risk and possible red zone target.
Kenny Golladay got $72M over four years and a punitive cost to release him.
Allen Robinson will be a one-year VSB signing.
Are you really struggling to see a distinction beyond "better attitude"?
Wouldn't the term "low risK" include the fact he is a cheap signing? I would think the inclusive of "low risk" clearly indicates the poster is aware the Giants didn't sign him to a $72 million contract....

All of that is a lot of words for you to agree with me that the Kenny Golladay comparison is dumb.
Art Stapleton
@art_stapleton
I'm not saying they signed Robinson to solely be a veteran presence. He's coming to try and make the team. And as of now, Slayton's not in the building for the offseason program. Not sure if or when that changes. Having another experienced receiver in the room can only help the transition.
About this signing is Robinson’s hot wife/girlfriend... Alyssa Sorto
If JoeyBigButts shows up as a BBI dupe account, we'll know which user registered it.
I like the signing. Quality insurance, inside-out versatility, veteran presence, good blocker, sets a floor under the position, etc. Hoping he won't make the team, but Robinson is a good use of a spot on the preseason WR depth chart.
Ok Slayton you don’t want to show up to camp, well now you are taking the chance of riding the pine and losing all value in the market place. Because this guy is going to come in and take all your reps in camp and be the first call of the bench not you.

the thread police demand a higher level of accuracy in all comparisons.
allen robinson got overpaid (at very similar $ to golladay) and injured 1 full year later, and thusly kicked the curb bc he cant separate 1 full year later. even if their AAVs were almost the same as free agents and contracts played out the same way and on field regression similarly.
just because he shares a lot in common with kenny golladay (though with a better attitude on a low risk contract) it doesnt mean the comparison to kenny golladay with a better attitude and lower risk isnt worth nitpicking.

very possible. id imagine robinson didnt have many suitors and a couple months out from camp was just looking to catch on somewhere.
if the details come out and there's $0 gtd like Long, there could literally be no downside.

Would you consider a 55% difference in total value meaningful?
How about 14% in AAV?
How about the fact that you have to use a prior contract with a previous team as the comparison, not the current contract with the current team?
Or the fact that they are not at all similar besides nominally playing WR?
It was a lazy comparison. Not quite as lazy as refusing to use a shift button, but close.

the thread police and the grammar police wrapped into 1 poster, talk about a dual threat.
and no i dont think it's a lazy comparison, i think they are pretty darn similar. they are both the same type of big bodied contested catch WR who was drafted on day 2 with concerns about movement, then lost a step they couldnt afford to lose pretty rapidly. each made 1 pro bowl in their careers but fell off after injuries.
those similarities are why one of them was the 2nd highest paid FA WR at $30m guaranteed about 12 months after the other was the highest paid WR with $40m guaranteed, so id say the nfl considered them pretty similar at the times they signed their last contracts, and similarly considered both of them total busts almost right away which is why both ended up in the same place 2 years after signing longer deals.
about sports is stupid enough id imagine 90%+ of bbi would agree we spend too much time doing it. we all have our stupid hobbies but religiously sub-commenting on various commenters just seems an order of magnitude stupider.
But for veteran presence, you can do worse. I imagine he's battling Hodgins for a spot.
probably but im not sure how you justify giving it to him unless they show up to camp in 2 different bodies. in what we all considered to be a disappointing season for hodgins, he was still more productive than robinson. he had 3 more first downs and 3 more tds in almost 50% fewer targets. he was also more productive in fewer targets in 2022 which was robinson pre-injury.
both were FA's a month ago and the nyg resigned Hodgins first ahead of Robinson. id be surprised if they gtd robinson anywhere near the 325k hodgins got, and unless he seriously outplays hodgins in camp i cant imagine keeping the 5 year older player.
hard to see him making the roster barring injuries/trade.
his biggest impact will likely be as a mentor for Nabers. They Giants are an extremely young team. There is not a lot of veteran leadership on this roster.
RE: RE: Robinson has never been blessed with good QB play
I can't get too excited about this signing -- it is comparable to what they did with Paris Campbell and Cole Beasley, who we also got all worked up about; if there are injuries this guy is just there for insurance purposes.
The Giant essentially have their WR room -- but there is no harm in bringing ing veteran competition to keep everyone on their toes and add depth for reps if there is an issue in camp or otherwise. It's more likely than not that he'll be cut when the roster is finalized at the end of August barring a rash of injuries.
Signing a vet WR like Robinson is all about Slayton
Slayton wants a higher salary, but under the Giants current limitations regarding the salary cap he's not going to get what he expects. It would not surprise me at all if the Giants cut Slayton and he'd sign with Philly.
Thank goodness the Giants drafted Malik Nabers this season and Jalin Hyatt last season, at least the Giants have two good WR's in their rebuilding phase.
Acquiring a seasoned WR like Allen Robinson is good to have a quality WR who's used to working with a subpar QB during his career. He'll teach the younger WR's to stay focused.

LOL. I didn't make the comparison, but I understand what Tim was getting at. A no risk Golladay. Likely washed up WR past his prime, but worth a shot since it's a cheap contract, thus the "no risk" term.
Amazed that's so controversial. Talk about much ado about nothing

You are probably right. Bye bye Slayton…nice knowing you.
red zone packages. He's one of the best contested catch WR's the last decade and is still awesome as a red zone target, especially on corner fade routes. Even as a decoy, that's extremely valuable in a tight area.
Holding this guy back is injuries. When on the field he’s as reliable as it gets. Hands are elite. Route running is outstanding. Catch radius is elite. Speed has obviously diminished because of age and injuries but he makes up for it by Mossing guys. He understands how to get open off the line; he understands how to sit in a zone; he understands how to set guys up by giving them different looks off the line. He understands how to work the sidelines; his toe tap/drag is elite. My Giants comp is Amani Toomer.
Overall I’ll give this signing an A+ considering it’s this late in the offseason.
If Schoen can make a similar signing at the CB position Giants will be set.
Reminds me of when the Giants signed Brandon Marshall. At the end of the day if he makes the final 53 and contributes I'll be pleasantly surprised.
In fairness to Robinson, he had more receptions and only 10 less yards last year than Brandon Marshall had in his final two years in the league combined. Robinson may be done but Marshall was
My guess is Daboll likes the inside/out alignment versatility because that is what they plan to do with Nabers - so a solid offset. Still not sure I would take Robinson over Hodgins though.

Hey Sy!
I can understand why you would say that. However, remember, his last BIG season came with Trubisky and Foles, 2020. Then Andy Dalton/Rookie Justin Fields 2021 that was a down year for him obviously. Then 2022 he gets picked up by the Rams they give him the big contract and Stanford gets injured and there went that season for them. 2023 he ends up with Pickett/Rudolph; need I say more. I respect everyone’s opinion on this signing; I’m just not ready to say this guy is done. The skill set is still there he needs better QB play in my opinion.
matt malone
@WanderingFins
to giants fans, his steelers stats are severely misleading. matt canada absolutely 100% wasted him & it is NOT an accurate representation of his abilities.
he was reliable when actually used. problem is more than 60% of his routes were empty running routes, not even blocking.
and that wasn't going so hot before he got hurt. 10 starts, 52 targets, 339 yards, 10 ypc, 3 tds. he averaged 34 ypg and had a 63.5% catch rate.
pittsburgh offense was trash but at 30 years old robinson hasnt been a good player in 4 years, and he tore an acl. thats why he's available at the minimum. he is this year's shepard/beasley though obviously a different type of player.
but they should be looking into a getting a veteran CB instead.
Since this is a veteran salary minimum contract, it doesn't really have to be "instead" of any other move. It essentially will have zero cap impact. All it means is someone else at the bottom of the 90 is getting early walking papers.
I don't see them going with a traditional FB versus moving a TE into the backfield as the TE gives more ability to go with the passing game. Most teams don't use the traditional FB anymore.
