Giants officially signed DT Elijah Chatman, a rookie tryout from SMU. Feels strange to refer to a 6-foot, 278-pound man as small, but his size was definitely notable compared to the other D-linemen at rookie minicamp. Certainly had to contribute to him winding up as a tryout, but clearly the Giants see potential.

OLB Jeremiah Martin was waived to open the roster spot for Chatman. Martin was signed to the P-squad at the end of last season and then signed to a futures deal.

the players under contract at 87. The Giants can have 91 total with the international roster exemption for the kicker from Ireland.

The Giants have 4 drafted players that are yet to sign contracts, so in effect the roster is basically at it’s maximum allowed of 91.

i know i know, slight hyperbole for teh 90th man on the roster, but i do feel bad for martin. lost his job over this waller stuff. but i guess he would have lost it eventually to someone else. 90th man churn is common.

It's inconvenient, but I don't think the 91st guy on the roster is going to be a difference maker this year. There are plenty of guys who can be cut to make room
i wonder if chatman will play FB at short yardage/goal line

What's the problem? None of his salary is guaranteed. If the Giants didn't want him, they would release him. I'm not sure what's behind the retirement talk, but I don't think he's serious about retiring and I don't think the Giants think he's serious.

Sexy Dex also played FB at Clemson at the goal line, with Christian Wilkins at RB.
When Dexter teasingly complained to Swinny that HE never got to score, they put in a successful pass to the FB.
(Of course this was always when they were substantially ahead.)

However, given the success of the Philly "Tush Push" maybe NY should reintroduce the "Elephant Backfield".

Speaking of Clemson, anyone remember Refigerator Perry doing just that with the Bears?
Re Elijah Chatman. I think the Giants have a plan.
Marty in Albany : 5/13/2024 8:53 pm : link
Maybe I'm giving the Giant too much credit here. IMHO the Giants must see a way to take advantage of his small size.

Maybe he can somehow hide from the offense behind taller DLs the same way that 5-10 RBs can "get lost" behind a wall of 6-5 offensive linemen. Whether Chatman would be a change of pace, or used for stunts, gadget plays, special teams, I have no idea.

I just don't think the Giants believe that his speed and strength makes up for his size and that they intend to use Chatman the same way they would use a 6-5 320 pound guy. I think the Giants feel that his size, speed, and strength (and I'm assuming smarts) is a very good combination (for something).

I love it when tryout players make it, but he's the 90th player on a 90-man roster. Every team except the Giants passed on him.

Why did the Giants sign him? Because they need a 3-technique penetrator. It's why they gave Casey Rogers $220,000 in guaranteed money as a UDFA too.

Chatman is the longest of longshots. But he was signed because there is a need on the DL for the type of player he is.

That being said, you have to root for these guys 😊

if anyone

can get something out of D.J. Davidson, Jordon Riley, Timmy Horne, Ryder Anderson, Casey Rogers, Elijah Chatman, it will be Andre Patterson.

Maybe let's see if he has any chance of making the team before giving him specialty roles. Heck, tell him to lose 20 pounds and make him a run-stopping MLB. Or how about 40 and make him an in the box safety.
There's a reason he wasn't one of more than 500 drafted players and UDFAs.

Thanks for the correction! I mis-remembered his TD as Dex sneaking out of the backfield and snagging a pass.
