NFT: Do you like romcoms?

SFGFNCGiantsFan : 5/13/2024 7:11 pm
Readily prepared to get flamed & referred to a word beginning with 'P' that rhythms with 'wussy'-Haha-, but as I get older...I find myself enjoying them more than I did when I was younger. I don't if it's being nostalgic for being young & naive about the seemingly endless possibilities of life & love or getting older & realizing the fragility of life & how you then know that you might only truly connect with a few or one person in life. I honestly don't know.

I bring this up because the wife-a sucker for them-& I watched this new Anne Hathaway romcom earlier on Amazon called 'The Idea of You', based on some book of this 40 year old woman who starts this whirlwind romance with this mid 20s singer of this world famous boy band. Long story short...I enjoyed it, even if the premise was a stretch. Obviously Anne being easy on the eyes helps matters too, Haha. But we also watched 'Notting Hill' a couple of weeks back & I remember seeing it with a girlfriend when it came out in '98 or '99 & thinking it was overly sentimental garbage. But seeing it again for the first time in 20 plus years...I really liked it.

Of course I liked some romcoms even in my youth-'Four Weddings & a Funeral' & the Linklater 'Before' trilogy comes to mind-but I feel I'm much more receptive to them as I age.

Can't stand them now. 50 and jaded, I guess.
I've always liked them

Hepburn/Tracy, Cary Grant all the Meg Ryan/Tom Hanks stuff. I don'dt see many new movies, and I don't care for much contemporary humor, so I'd guess there'd be fewer of these that I'd care for
Bahahaha!

My girlfriend loves them. So by the law of transitivity, or osmosis, or one of those things, I've learned to like (*cough*GuiltyPleasure*cough*) them too. For every two sports programs we watch for me, we have to watch one of her romcoms too. Meh, it works out in the end.

Hahaha. Touche. Then again-for as much shit I give DJ-I wouldn't be crying if he ended up with my daughter in 20 odd years. I think the wife & I could retire comfortably in that scenario, Haha.
With all the crazy things going on in the world…

a bunch of good ones came out in the late 2000s.
I watched “It’s Complicated” on a recent transatlantic flight

Twice.

Once on the way over, once on the way back.

That movie cracks me up.
Good ones, for sure, no shame in that SF

I’ll do you one better…one of our unofficial holiday traditions is every year I agree to watch one of those hallmark movies with my wife. Naturally, I act like it’s a big favor for me to do so, and extract a commitment that she’ll watch a classic action flick with me in return

But have to admit, I can’t help enjoying the soapy cheesiness of those hallmark movies.
Nope. Those are for women.

Depends on the romcom
Russ in NH (formerly Queens) : 5/14/2024 6:39 am : link
It Happened One Night, followed closely by Ninotchka, rank as the greatest examples of the genre ever made. Some of the more modern stuff is OK (thinking of some Hugh Grant vehicles), but but nothing of recent vintage holds a candle to the two mentioned here, in my opinion.
My wife is addicted, so I've seen just about all of them
Matt M. : 5/14/2024 6:46 am : link
And multiple times at that. We just watched "The Idea of You" also. I thought it was meh. But I do like "Notting Hill" as you mentioned. I find it interesting you mentioned those 2 in particular, because I felt lke the Hathaway movie was a lesser version of Notting Hill.
Ewwwww

NO!
My first thought
dreadedrummer : 5/14/2024 7:24 am : link
when I saw the trailer for "The Idea of You" was "Wait, Anne Hathaway is in her 40's?!?!?!?!" I could have sworn she was still in her 20's, early 30's at most!

time there's a wedding or the two people finally realize that they're in love or whatever she always catches me watching her smile and be happy in the moment. It's one of my favorite things so what's the harm? I got here to watch "The Last of Us" because of the romance of Nick Offerman's character so it paid off.

We have our limits, I won't watch a hallmark movie and she'll sit out on Dune or something similar. It all works out.

I do enjoy them

our favorite is Something's gotta give with Jack Nicholson and Meryl Streep (older romcom). We named our daughter after one of the characters (just because we liked the name).

That was my thought as well.
Occasionally but if I am shelling out $$$ to go to the movies

I want to be entertained. Action, adventure, IMAX, the works. I am old enough to have watched the Adam West Batman TV series as a kid, so when Tim Burton & Michael Keaton brought back The Dark Knight, that was awesome. Star Wars, Rocky, Close Encounters, etc when they first came out.
My wife likes them
bigblue5611 : 5/14/2024 12:47 pm : link
and I've found myself enjoying them as the years have gone by (41 now). So a yes here for me, and there are some good ones out there, even somewhat newer. "Always Be My Maybe" was a good one with a nice cameo from Keanu (playing himself...kinda).
Chances Are is a all time classic..

Today’s RomComs suck ass. And are mostly utter shit. So you aren’t wrong. They aren’t funny. They are mostly just dumb. One of my favorite John Wayne Movies is The Quiet Man. Which is a Rom Com. I also thought The Devil Wears Prada was done really good. But if I’m going to watch a movies that I call brain candy I’ll watch John Wick or the Equalizer. They are what they are. I don’t tell anyone what to enjoy. But why go to a crappy movie regardless of genre. I would never miss a Marvel movie 10 years ago. Now I wait til they are all free. Even the better ones as I just don’t see the quality
Depends

My wife loves Sci fi and anime, but also Hallmark movies and as I'm softening up because of my kids and my wife, I don't hate them. Feeling happy about things is pretty new to me, I used to hate all of that stuff, but my outlook on just about everything is a complete 180.

Which anime? Do I smell a separate thread being started? Asking for a friend.
I like a good Romcom
RomanWH : 5/14/2024 2:11 pm : link
so long as they don't forget the com part of it. Always thought Bedazzled was hilarious back when Elizabeth Hurley was in her prime. And the greatest Romcom of all... Coming to America. And yes, that movie is 100% a Romcom.
I like them. Some are really funny
SomeFan : 5/14/2024 2:14 pm : link
I despise the movies of the past 10-15 years that try to be weird or quirky as if that makes them good or interesting. There are exceptions but there are way too many of those types of movies that have been made.
