Crazy idea- shop Slayton

EdS56 : 5/13/2024 7:38 pm
I think he could fetch something. Nabers will almost
certainly draw double coverage and our other receivers
should have the opportunity to show out.

Crazy thought I know, but this guy I’ve seen choke in
critical situations and disappear in games.

Just an idea…. So let me have it.
He is Jones favorite target.....he is not expensive
George from PA : 5/13/2024 7:44 pm : link
And considering, injury happens to the Giants....besides, what will he bring in? A 6th?....maybe a 5th.

maybe during training camp
Giantsfan79 : 5/13/2024 7:49 pm : link
if an injury comes up but trades don't usually happen this time of year because all the rosters are full and all the teams think they've found the draft gems.
...
SFGFNCGiantsFan : 5/13/2024 7:51 pm : link
I honestly can't believe he's holding out, after signing a contract last year. This isn't Jerry Rice we're talking about.
Yeah, the heck with having four decent WRs. Way too many.
BillT : 5/13/2024 8:02 pm : link
Who the hell needs that. And on top of that know for sure none of the other WRs will ever be hurt cause we’re the Giants and injuries are something that happens to other teams.
This is more of a trade deadline move
Blue Dog : 5/13/2024 8:03 pm : link
By then we will have an idea how Hyatt is progressing and if he's ready to be WR2 and where the season stands. Doing it now is just shooting the season in the foot before it starts. He's an asset at a good price.
Maybe they are . They won't publicize it.
Blue21 : 5/13/2024 8:04 pm : link
But if they are looking to save some money it wouldn't surprise me.
Straight up for Pennix
ZogZerg : 5/13/2024 8:10 pm : link
Seems like a great deal for both sides.
You gotta be off your nut
Maggot Brain : 5/13/2024 8:21 pm : link
to trade Slayton. He actually creates separation and can generate yards after the catch. Hyatt is still learning and Hodgins can't separate. Robinson is a slot receiver. Slayton will start.
I think that would be
Keaton028 : 5/13/2024 8:30 pm : link
a terrible move, unless it is for a 3rd round pick or better. Slayton is the only long term, somewhat proven WR on the roster. What happens if Nabers goes down, or worse, he is a bust? Slayton is insurance for that. He should be cheap and has a rapport with DJ.
Consider the locker room
MNP70 : 5/13/2024 9:13 pm : link
and the message this would send. Say goodbye to any FA receivers worth a damn coming here.
He’s holding out no?
EdS56 : 5/13/2024 9:19 pm : link
I thought he had a signed contract?

So far everything he has held out of has been voluntary. He has the right to pursue an extension in this way. If he holds out of mandatory camp, then be up in arms. He hasn’t done anything wrong by his current contract with the Giants so far.
It’s a catch 22
Shecky : 5/14/2024 8:57 am : link
Slayton is one of the few on this roster that is cheap and productive. So he has value not just to the Giants but elsewhere.

The problem is, what can they realistically get in return for him?

Let him play out the year. Worst case scenario he is signing for $8mm/yr. Best case he is getting $12mm/yr and playing well. Both of those scenarios get us a better comp formula pick than we can get in a trade anyway.
I don't think we can get close to his value in a trade. He's fast, he

stays healthy and last season he appeared to have conquered his problem with drops.

I don't know about conquered - but he showed improvement, for sure
I don't think they're going to trade him
UberAlias : 5/14/2024 4:42 pm : link
But I would try if I were them. We're definitely worse off without him, but we need to figure out how to get more draft ammo, and we don't have a ton of ways to do that.

It's because relatively speaking Slayton is underpaid. We would all do the same thing.
The Slayton love here
JT039 : 5/14/2024 6:01 pm : link
Is as mysterious as some love for Jones.

He’s not a difference maker nor has he ever been.

We moved on from Barkley
We should move on from Jones
We should get rid of anyone who can bring back any type of draft pick that isn’t on a rookie deal.

He’s been too quiet lately. Need to light a fire under his ass…

Agree, let's move on from someone that is effective and stretches the field. They have lots of those now...[smfh]

I may drop him a line. I'd hate to have him not get involved here.

Slayton means the world to him. ;)

They actually do in Hyatt and Nabers. And the term “effective” is very loose for a number 1 WR.

We need Hyatt to supplant him cause he is more talented than Slayton.
I get the idea
bwitz : 5/14/2024 7:48 pm : link
But it simply doesn’t work. It would’ve been done already if there was interest in him.

Yeah, God forbid they have a few guys that put pressure on the backline.
I wouldn't turn down a ridiculous offer, but I'd like to see as much speed on the field as is possible. 3 or 4 sub-4.40 guys would be pretty nice to see.
I hate but trading Slayton for a 6th or a 7th
LauderdaleMatty : 5/14/2024 10:50 pm : link
Which is about the most they'd probably get would be moronic. No one thinks the guy is some all pro. Heralds get being paid lie a solid vet. 6 million a year and a peanuts. The obsession w dumping his is weird as fuck

christian : 5/14/2024 11:01 pm : link
In his two years in this system Slayton has 1500 yards on 150 targets. You don't have to project something he hasn't done to set a solid floor for a 2nd receiver.

For instance if Hyatt produced 750 yards on 75 targets next year, that would be a huge success. But that would be doubling his production YoY. Can he do it? Maybe.

The smart move is keep Slayton and not extend him. If Hyatt shows in camp he's clearly passed Slayton, then you consider trading him.

But of all fan bases, Giants fans should realize projecting and assuming young players are destined to develop commensurate with their draft and talent position, is misguided.

Let Hyatt show he can do what Slayton has proven he can do consistently. Then make a move.
crazier idea
bc4life : 5/15/2024 8:46 am : link
prepare for the season and finding his replacement in next year's off-season.

keep in mind, none of the young pups have proven anything yet

There is limited love for Slayton. There is none for Jones. That's a fiction of the DJHC. Both are overwhelmingly viewed as mediocre, at best, players (and that is being generous for DJ, who is mostly viewed as less than mediocre). Unlike QB, WR is a position where being mediocre can still have valuable contribution to a team's success. You need solid contributors on the team. If the dollar value is right, it is the WRONG move to trade those contributors away, unless you're stacked at the position.

IF a first, second, or third rounder is the trade, go for it, or consider it, but I would not take a 5,6,7. Doubtful a 1,2,3,4 is going to be on the table.
