Could Darrian Beavers could be productive this season?

Tom in NY : 5/16/2024 2:45 pm
It was interesting that the Giants kept him on the PS a year after his knee injury so he could recover....they could have just cut him. For those that forgot, he was looking like a potential starter in the '22 training camp but hurt his knee in preseason. Spent all of '22 on IR and came back for '23 training camp but did not look like he had his explosion back.

They just drafted Muasau, but Beavers could potentially add something as the 4th rush end, which he did very well in college(UConn).

I was just thinking about how the coaching staff likes players that can play multiple roles, and Beavers could fill in at both ILB, Edge, and contribute on special teams.

An interesting camp story to follow, outside of the big name players.

He certainly has the pro size at 6-4. 255.
No idea how much he’s lost with the surgery and long time recovering.
He was on his way to securing a starters spot before the injury.
He's one of those guys, like Aaron Robinson,

who we just seem to know so little about.

He should be recovered from his knee surgery for this training camp (2 full years since the injury), so whatever he's got should be on display. Tough, physical LB. If he's healthy I hope the can find a way to make use of him and say goodbye to Basham.

With Okereke, McFadden, Beavers, and Muasau that would be a dramatic improvement to the '22 LB corps.
Beavers was an effective rusher at UConn. He was only there 2 years
Ivan15 : 5/16/2024 3:01 pm : link
Before moving on to Cincinnati where he wasn’t nearly as effective.
IDK ...

Last season, it seemed like he was playing with cement blocks on his feet.

Coming off knee surgery....it's usually the 2nd year back that their speed kicks back in place.
In the '22 camp/pre-season he looked much quicker/decisive.
I mean, it's possible
UberAlias : 5/16/2024 3:11 pm : link
But I'm not counting on it. We're likely to see a few of JSs draft picks not making the cut, and he was a 6th round pick (and the last selection) from three years ago.
He wasn't a fast LB'er

before, the knee injury may just take that element completely off the table for him and that may make him unable to overcome that with other aspects..

Don't be so quick to get rid of Basham. He could be looked at to fill a D-Line rusher role.

Darrian Beavers is one of the players I will be closely monitoring this summer. He was well on his way to winning the ILB job as a rookie before MetLife got him (non-contact ACL).
Hard to count on the guy
Rudy5757 : 5/16/2024 4:00 pm : link
He’s on the team so anything can happen but I’m expecting about as much as you expect from an UDFA. 2 years is a long time. A lot depends on the player himself. Did he dedicate to learning and building his body or was he just along for the ride.

Keeping him on the PS last year gives some hope but him staying there and not being promoted isn’t a great sign.
He and Aaron Robinson

My expectations are very small….outmof sight, out of mind I’m afraid.
Who ??

Another JS pick that is always in the trainers room and never on the field .

I’m sure you’re right but I remember liking him more than McFadden pre-injury
I remember him being quicker than McFadden too. But, as you say, may be moot now post-injury

Except he literally was not hurt last year. He spent the year on the PS except for the last two regular-season games, which he played in.

You might want to check into things like that first.

I forgot about Beavers. He did show promise before his injury, but

now there's no way to tell. He just has to work his way back and prove himself to his coaches on the field.

I think he was drafted 2 years and 2 weeks ago but why fix on details, right?

Oh excuse me he wasn't hurt last year. Was he on the field ?

Keep in mind who Beavers had been outplaying to earn that practice time:

Martinez, Crowder, McFadden, Calitro, Cam Brown, Coughlin.

Yeah he was getting practice reps - but the cupboard was pretty bare

Yes, I already answered that with my post.
Has Anyone Heard How His Knee Has Recovered?
OntheRoad : 5/16/2024 7:47 pm : link

Some players are never the same after a knee injury like that. Others seem to return to 100%.

Bigger inside linebackers help the run defense. Beavers is listed as 255, about 20 pounds heavier than McFadden.

It will be big if Beavers can come back.

The 255lb number gets brought up a lot, and it even says that on the website, but he was 237lbs at the combine. Has he honestly put on that much weight while recovering from a torn ACL? If he has then I presume the plan is to move him outside, but I don't buy it.

or never for him. Same for A. Robinson. Basham is likely gone IMO. He was inactive for several games at the end of last season IIRC. Remember that players that make the initial 53 could be replaced by waiver wire claims or veterans who are cut and not subject to waivers.

I think Basham is gone too. My baseless offseason prediction is they try to move him inside, but he loses to Ryder Anderson who is my guy this year to make it (or maybe UDFA Casey Rogers). Then OLB is the spot where we see an outsider added. It would be nice if it was Beavers but I don't see it.
Beavers was on the field during last year's

training camp. Didn't look ready. They manipulated the roster, so they could IR AFTER final cuts, and then activated him (as Eric pointed out), the last 2 games to play specials.
That shows they think he has possibilities going forward.
He would have won the ILB spot his rookie year until the knee injury. He "was" bigger, faster and more athletic than McFadden.
I suspect they want to see where he's at this camp.

He was never on IR last year.

McFadden beat him out. They "risked" subjecting Beavers to waivers and he spent most of the season on the PS. He played in t he last two games, exclusively on special teams.

However, he practiced all season... OTAs, training camp, regular-season.

My assumption is he was still not 100 percent (same with anyone coming off an ACL, including a guy like Wan'Dale).
I dont think he was 100% last year

McFadden has to tackle better or he will lose his job. On the other hand, Beavers has to worry about Muasau and Adams now.

Darrian is a multifaceted, multi-position defensive player. He has excellent size and speed to play more than one position in your defensive front seven. Darrian is very smart and shows the agility to rush the passer from off or on the line of scrimmage. He has those long arms and legs that makes it easy to cover ground quickly without having the blazing speed and quickness that most teams will be looking for in workouts. In spite of playing numerous positions on defense, his instincts are better than most would expect. Darrian is patient and doesn’t get fooled into taking false steps when tracking where the ball is against play action. He has very good cover skills (for a linebacker) to go up against those pass-catching Tight Ends that cause so much trouble for most defenses.

Why would he do that? He is almost always wrong. Why would he change now...?
McFadden continued to get better
bc4life : 5/18/2024 1:38 pm : link
as year wore on.

Matthew Adams may keep Beavers from making the team. Big hitter and very good on special teams.

Also have Simmons and Muasau - IMO, Beavers has an uphill battle, steep uphill battle
