M.S. : 5/19/2024 10:09 am
which Yankees starter is taken out of the starting rotation... Marcus Stroman? Someone else? The Yankees utilize a 6-man rotation?

piggyback Gill and Schmidt to manage their innings since both are on track for career highs.

plus odds one of the starters gets hurt aren't zero.
Gil

might be on an innings limit coming back from Tommy John surgery.

Assuming everyone stays healthy (knock on wood), something like this. They won't call it a six-man rotation but it will be some form of load management for Gil and Schmidt, maybe even Rodon in that mix.
Schmidt is just

Starting to show he can pitch into a third time through the lineup.

I had thought the same thing about splitting between Schmidt and Gil but I think now they'll end up using Gil as a two or three inning guy and spot starter, like King last year, to limit his innings. Cole will likely be limited when he gets back so there will be a couple of innings in his, early games, and all the starters will have a bad cutting from time to time.
Nestor

is the odd man out. Would fit into the bullpen.

Nestor has been the least effective pitcher, but I doubt he loses his slot. I think Gil will be in the BP as they build his innings. I doubt he goes past 130/140 innings, amybe even only 120...
They may use Gil as a spot starter if they wish to rest some arms.

Agree as to Nestor. Same as to Stroman (in response to the OP). Both of them are starters who can eat a bunch of innings. They may be 3-4-5 level starters, but they're not going to go to the pen.

Hard to send Gil there, as great as he's pitched, but as mentioned he's the one who will be on the innings limit. And they may be managing Schmidt and Rodon as well. Nestor and Stroman don't have those issues.

Schmidt threw 159 innings last year. I think 180 will not be an issue.
I do not see issues with Stroman either. Rodon has plenty of experience and threw 178 in 2022 -so I suspect he will be fine but they may manage a few games come August.

Yep, off and on all year. There will be innings available this year.

its a bit of modified 6 man where you don't pitch all 6 in row but skip 1 of them each time through to generate a little extra rest.

No chance that Cole is the last guy to go on IR from the staff this year so odds are they wont have 6 for too long of a stretch.
