Explain to me how a 100 yr old uniform rerelease honoring

RELICDOA : 5/19/2024 2:08 pm
One of the most storied franchises has caused so much backlash. The comments across the media are mind numbing. Is society becoming this dumb?!
“These are not Giants colors” These are literally Giants colors
“Trying to copy the Canadians” These are the Giants original color scheme from the 20’s (pretty much the exact Jersey)
“Who thought this color scheme was good?” Someone 100 years ago
“Tan pants?! Gross” original pants the Giants wore (khaki legit goes with any shirt color)
“Why didn’t they choose the 80’s uniform?” We are a 100 year old franchise paying homage to our storied past.

How have people become so decisive? For a brand to last 100 years is incredibly impressive. For a brand to pay homage to the originators is the ultimate sign of respect. I grew up with the 80’s Giants logo and I love it, but paying homage to our elders who are no longer here ties all Giants fans and players of the past to present day. Between social media comments from clueless fans as well as clueless comments from Giants fans it only leads me to think that being negative someone is a new sickness.

People were looking for something that resonates with fans that are still alive today.

If the Yankees were to come out with a Highlanders alternate jersey I think it would land just as flat.

Just because it's historic doesn't mean it's going to be a hit with the fans
I find the uniforms hideous
moespree : 5/19/2024 2:20 pm : link
But it doesn't really matter. If they win the games they wear them in, that's the most important thing.

As far as all the complaints...well that's pretty much how it goes these days. It is what it is I guess.
I like them.

They are historically accurate and check every box with regard to their intent.

How people respond to the aesthetics with liking or disliking is entirely subjective.

One thing I can say honestly, you really can't judge them objectively until you see them on the field. Some opinions may change between now and later in the season when they actually wear them in a game.

You should read the private exchanges between Larry and I on this.

I've reached the point where it's not worth the angst to argue with those who don't get it.

The Giants have countless variations of their uniform (though Larry probably actually has a firm number). In effect, the Giants have had throwback variations of the 1950s and 1980s uniform. I would argue that the current uniform (and variations) are a throwback to an earlier time. In other words, they've done throwbacks to many different decades already.

The current version that is causing such an uproar has its origins in creation of the foundation of the franchise. What more perfect time than to release it during the 100th year anniversary. If not now, then when?

"Some things are best left in the past."

Whatever.

Eric… 100% agree. I wish they did a throwback alternate every year paying homage to the past. I love our history and love seeing old pics….Those old school trench coats standing around the fire barrel… made the Giants of the past larger than life…. Like Superhero’s. I’ve watched the Giants Among Men video so many times! I enjoyed the flashbacks paying homage to the sneaker game and the old school players so much as a kid.

They aren't historically accurate. Parts come from three different years - from 1925 to 1938. If you want to honor the 100 year anniversary, use the 1925 uniform.

good or right. Plus add in the social media "outrage" that people can get away with due to basically being anonymous, and there you have the lethal combo.
I think the biggest issue those who don't like the uniform is
truebluelarry : 5/19/2024 2:52 pm : link
that it is predominantly red. The nickname "Big Blue" is so ingrained in their consciousness that anything counter to that is seen as objectionable.

The truth, however, is that red was the Giants primary color from their inception in 1925 through the mid 1950s.

The Giants did not wear blue jerseys at home on a week-to-week basis until 1957. Before that, red was their base color and blue was an alternate that was typically used when they played other red teams like Washington and the Chicago Cardinals.

I liked the Giants red alternate jerseys they wore from 2004-2007. My presumption is most of the same people who disliked those jerseys - and I remember the posts here in the forum at the time saying "the Giants are Big Blue, not Big Red" - are the same ones deriding the new throwbacks.

But the truth is, the Giants were Big Red for their first 30 years.

I like the change. It's good to shake up the norm once in a while.

I noted this in the other thread. These uniform layouts were designed to work with the more muted color schemes available back in the day. Not that they were great designs to begin with, but at least they made sense.

If you're going for an "old-timey" look, the colors should match the esthetic.

'I just think they're neat.'

I think I'm one of the few that actually like them. But some people don't understand the concept of subjectivity or opinion versus fact. It's one thing to not be into the design which is totally fine, but acting like it's the end of the world and not understanding the historical significance of why the design is what it is is a whole other level of being ignorant.

I’m not a fan of the uniforms, but the team can play in rompers for all I care. I just want the team to start winning again.

In the end it’s really just a marketing ploy by the team and the league to sell more apparel.

Some fans absolutely believe that they must wear the current year’s colors/jerseys to support the team. While that’s their prerogative, it does kind of suck to spend all that money and it’s only good for 1 year in those people’s minds.

There was a comedian, I forget who, who once said that the players change so much that we’re essentially just rooting for laundry. Maybe he was right. 😆

That's not entirely true, the part about the pants & socks coming from 1925 is just marketing mumbo-jumbo. The 1933 pants & socks were exactly the same design, the only difference being the tone of blue in 1933 was lighter than 1925. So that's inaccurate. The pants & socks are 1933 vintage.

The change in helmet design wasn't a flippant choice, it came from necessity. The 1933 spider stripe helmet design proved to be too difficult to replicate on the modern helmet shell designs, they would have looked terrible. The wings are much easier to replicate, and in my opinion, look good. I think that was a good compromise choice.

Haha. I did correct myself in the post immediately after.

Seinfeld is so ingrained in my subconscious, that I sometimes forget what was an actual episode and what wasn’t. Sometimes art imitates life;sometimes life imitates art, and sometimes we just live in a bizarro world.
I personally welcome the alternate throwback uniforms.

True.

In a game, that red band around the center will look even uglier, moving in slow motion on a 350 pound lineman.

If they had gone with black and white instead of blue and red, I could just hear the jokes about Belted Galloways.

they are absolutely the right kit to unveil for a 100th anniversary season. As Eric says, our current uniforms are already a throwback to the 50s/60s. We already have 2 alternates that are throwbacks to the 80s. So, using this in an historic season is perfectly fine.

What I do have a problem with is the grossly overpriced 1925 merchandise they are already hawking.

When the franchise does something with the obvious intent to pander to current fans, they are correctly criticized.
In this instance they are clearly honoring the fact that the team is 100 years old, by showing what was attractive 100 years ago.

People like what they like. As I'm in my 50s - I love the 80s giants uniform and would prefer they stick with that. The turn of the century uniforms are a bit jarring - but in some ways also kind of cool as they are kind of like the Steelers throwback so whatever. Still - they are kinda ugly. lol.

"An expression of great respect and honor", not an elicitation to 21st Century visual appeal.

The uniform is throw-back (especially the pants) in a most honest way - when men clashed in primitive attire (especially leather helmets) - often in the mud, with no more than a couple of thousand people in the stands, if they were lucky.

I like them but agree that the colors don’t quite fit the period look. Also, the old-time jerseys had long sleeves, like rugby shirts, and the design would probably look better with them.

I think the winged helmet is a fun change of pace. I know, a lot of fans associate it with Michigan. It’s not like Michigan ownes the style.

That's the problem: no one cares what looked good 100 years ago, unless it also looks good today (like some throwback hockey jerseys).

The ruler of the roost across a variety of entertainment platforms is nostalgia. Nostalgia sells easily. These unis are historic, commemorative, and an homage to steal some adjectives used by others. What they are not however is nostalgic. And that's where I think the divide lies. If these were uniforms that 30-60 year olds grew up watching they'd be a hit. Because they were last seen before those people were born, that's why they're not liked

Personally I like historic stuff like this, but I understand those who don't.
