In the 3rd round, (#70)the Giants drafted CB Andru Phillips and passed on K-State's guard Cooper Beebe. The guys talked about this and it just reminded me how bad I wanted Beebe for the Giants; the hated Cowpukes snatched him up (#73). (The rich get richer, probably their next Pro Bowler, makes me sick).

But I agree with the analysts, the O-line question doesn't seem to be fully resolved (even though by not drafting to help this area they communicate they're "good enough")
Just watching Beebe against Texas, and seeing him go against 1st rounder (#16) Byron Murphy & 2nd rounder T'Vondre Sweat (#38) - how he stopped both in their tracks is pretty darned impressive.
I don't think Phillips faced Marvin Harrison, Malik Nabers, Rome Odunze, or Adonai Mitchell (not his fault) - But, do you see him shutting down any of those guys ? - that's the equivalent question; that's all I'm sayin.
I'm not sold he will be anything more than an average player though. There is a lot of "ugly" in his game that he got away with - that won't happen in the NFL
Here's your choice: Use newly acquired veterans who at least have a track record of playing well to replace poorly performing linemen. Or,
Draft rookie linemen who might be good in the long run, but who are very likely to be terrible if forced to start in their rookie year.
If you absolutely need to improve the team this year, and the second coming of Andrew Thomas was available, would you draft him if you knew that he would be terrible in his first year? Another example: We drafted a top Center in Shmitz. He had all kinds of college experience, and was a far better choice than anyone who was available in the third round this year. He'll be great someday, but he wasn't last year.
It is about the play as the unit more than individual guys being great. Yes you have to have talent but you really need to jell, to know your role, know your abilities and trust the guys next to you to know and do the same. Hopefully we have that with this group..
Thomas is a stud
JMS should be a good Center
Neal has potential but has to realize it.
Runyan, J.EL, A.St, A.Sc all should be helpful, useful starters or role players and then our own young guys Josh E, MM getting healthy and contributing.. Health and consistency should be a big plus this year alone.
If Neal develops, our TE's blcok some this year and we get solid interior play, our offense can utilize its weapons..
The corner made much more sense there.
The corner made much more sense there.
If you want to exclude Bobby Hart, the last OL the Giants drafted in Round 3 or later that had sustained success in the NFL would probably have to be David Diehl. There were a couple of guys in between who showed brief flashes and quickly fizzled out (McCants though that was with the Raiders, Shane Lemieux)
The corner made much more sense there.
That's not how you think about it though
have NO ONE that stands out as the #2 corner.. and serious need for a slot corner..
and fans still cry that we didnt take a guard who probably is NOT going to start over two veterans..
