John Mara opposes 18 game season, but may be minority

Eric from BBI : Admin : 5/22/2024 2:54 pm
Jeremy Fowler @JFowlerESPN

#Giants owner John Mara believes most owners are in favor of eventual 18-game season. "I can’t say I’m necessarily crazy about extending the season," he said.

"I worry more about player fatigue and wear and tear on the players moving forward. That’s one of the reasons why we have to have the discussion with (the players union).”
The NFL is so dumb.

Just put in an extra bye week. The NFL and players get more money. Players get extra rest. The NFL doesn't have to have more games. They just have an extra week to split up their games and make money. It's not hard to understand.

And we all know what the issue is here... aside from injuries, the players are less ready to start a season with even 3 preseason games. The coaches are complicit in this. They are so afraid of injury that the starters sit. Meanwhile, the OLs around the NFL and tackling are a mess.
Yep. It's a shitshow.
robbieballs2003 : 5/22/2024 3:14 pm : link
And don't get me started on the lack of hitting allowed in the preseason. Don't they have something crazy like only 8 days of fully padded practices leading up to the season?

I am a firm believer in too much rest and taking it easy is not a good thing. I'm not saying you need to run your players into the ground but you also have to allow your players to get into game shape.

I agree with John.

They should be playing fewer games, not more.

CFL has been playing 18 games a season since 1986.

With a 45 man roster.

If they had an 18 game season
moespree : 5/22/2024 4:18 pm : link
The most logical thing to do is make it a 20 week season with 2 byes built into the schedule.

This of course will never happen and I am under no illusions that it would. But it's what should be done if you're going to make them play 18 games.
Already I think 17 games is too many.
CT Charlie : 5/22/2024 4:39 pm : link
I wish Elon would have bought the whole NFL instead of Twitter and decreed a 16-game regular season.
14 games

Season
stretch234 : 5/22/2024 4:55 pm : link
18 games will happen and the players will agree to it by demanding 2 bye weeks. you can have it where no teams play more than 7 games before a bye. Teams coming off bye weeks can only ply other teams off bye weeks

this also allows the NFL to get the SB on Presidents weekend and own most of Feb broadcast schedule

there is too much money for owners and players not to get this done

wrong, more games = more of these extra rights deals (or just more commercial space to sell) = more money.

think of it this way, teams currently play 17 games and the salary cap is 255m = 15m of revenue to players per game they play.

the cap is just under 50% of total nfl revenue, so an extra game is basically that much more to both players and owners. especially if they are peeling off rights to various streaming platforms willing to pay net new fees (which the networks will also pay for extra weeks).
If they go to an 18 game season they must increase the size of the

game day roster.
Count me as another vote for a 14 game season.
Red Dog : 5/22/2024 6:11 pm : link
It's too long now. And the quality of play has deteriorated with every season extension. I watch less and less with every passing year.
...
SFGFNCGiantsFan : 5/22/2024 7:04 pm : link
I used to think the NFL was going to kill the golden goose, but between FF & now gambling being legal...IDK.

That said, I just have to laugh when I hear the NFL talk about how much they care about player safety when I see an 18 game season bandied about. It's all about the almighty coin.
I hate the 17-game season. 18 games is better than 17. But 16 games
Ivan15 : 5/22/2024 10:05 pm : link
And more playoff games with no byes would be even better. I know that won’t happen.
Are they going to pay the
section125 : 5/22/2024 10:20 pm : link
players an extra 6% or 8% for increased games and then do the same with the cap?
They need to add more practice time
Rudy5757 : 5/22/2024 10:39 pm : link
Not more games. They should be able to do more in the off-season to get players ready. It doesn’t have to be mandatory until training camp but the rules are stupid. This is a multi billion dollar industry and the prep time is almost non existent.

After the draft, coaches and players should be able to train and practice together. No pads just training and learning. Getting the players on the same page. If some players don’t want to go it’s not mandatory until training camp.

It’s turning into glorified flag football.

Perhaps you haven’t heard of OTA’s
They need to increase the roster size
blueblood : 5/23/2024 6:48 am : link
if they are going to 18 games. Roster should to to 55 players with more active on gameday.
I think there could be some common ground here for all.
Andy in Halifax : 5/23/2024 7:41 am : link
Eliminate one preseason game
Add additional practices to the camp schedule
Add one regular season game.
Add a bye week.

Am I crazy to think coaches might like more practices before the season vs an exhibition game? NFL makes more money, players get more money and more rest. With an extra bye week you can probably do better giving teams their Thursday night game after a bye week.
I don't understand why they seem to be against expanding the roster
JOrthman : 5/23/2024 7:55 am : link
I think that solves a lot of issues and makes the game more competitive.

They are trying to prevent teams from stashing players.

I get that, but you will get a better product. Teams will be able to have players on their roster that know the system. That way when they get hit hard with injuries, they don't have to start guys off the street, which leads to ugly football.

How do you know that they won't put in an extra bye week?
Roster
stretch234 : 5/23/2024 12:35 pm : link
All they have to do is eliminate inactive players. The entire roster is active every game sans IR. If a player is unhealthy he doesn’t play

Just this expansion gets starters off of special teams
How do you tell me you don't care about the well being of your players
Essex : 5/23/2024 1:10 pm : link
without telling you don't care about the well being of your players. These guys (who are generally really wealthy to begin with) literally print money while their players get injured at alarming rates and they never seem to be satisfied. Ironically, it is probably the poorest owner in Mara who is against it.
JOrthman - i think that's their 'give' in negotiations with NFLPA
Eric on Li : 5/23/2024 1:14 pm : link
so their posture is to be against it as part of the negotiation.

eventually the deal is going to be:

extra bye week
+ higher salary cap, more $ to players (from new rev)
+ more jobs for players
= 18 games schedule deal
As someone who loves the game
River Mike : 5/23/2024 6:00 pm : link
there can't be too many games for me. Leaving the welfare of the players aside (there are ways to deal with that), I don't understand fans complaining there are too many games or the games are too long. When I and my family manage to go to pre-season games, driving hours from eastern CT., we don't leave until the final whistle, no matter the score and with no regard for the abominable traffic ... and this is for a meaningless pre-season game. They want to give me more? Ok.
