#Giants owner John Mara believes most owners are in favor of eventual 18-game season. "I can’t say I’m necessarily crazy about extending the season," he said.
"I worry more about player fatigue and wear and tear on the players moving forward. That’s one of the reasons why we have to have the discussion with (the players union).”
And we all know what the issue is here... aside from injuries, the players are less ready to start a season with even 3 preseason games. The coaches are complicit in this. They are so afraid of injury that the starters sit. Meanwhile, the OLs around the NFL and tackling are a mess.
I am a firm believer in too much rest and taking it easy is not a good thing. I'm not saying you need to run your players into the ground but you also have to allow your players to get into game shape.
Lol
With a 45 man roster.

This of course will never happen and I am under no illusions that it would. But it's what should be done if you're going to make them play 18 games.
this also allows the NFL to get the SB on Presidents weekend and own most of Feb broadcast schedule
there is too much money for owners and players not to get this done
wrong, more games = more of these extra rights deals (or just more commercial space to sell) = more money.
think of it this way, teams currently play 17 games and the salary cap is 255m = 15m of revenue to players per game they play.
the cap is just under 50% of total nfl revenue, so an extra game is basically that much more to both players and owners. especially if they are peeling off rights to various streaming platforms willing to pay net new fees (which the networks will also pay for extra weeks).
That said, I just have to laugh when I hear the NFL talk about how much they care about player safety when I see an 18 game season bandied about. It's all about the almighty coin.
After the draft, coaches and players should be able to train and practice together. No pads just training and learning. Getting the players on the same page. If some players don’t want to go it’s not mandatory until training camp.
It’s turning into glorified flag football.

Perhaps you haven’t heard of OTA’s
Add additional practices to the camp schedule
Add one regular season game.
Add a bye week.
Am I crazy to think coaches might like more practices before the season vs an exhibition game? NFL makes more money, players get more money and more rest. With an extra bye week you can probably do better giving teams their Thursday night game after a bye week.
They are trying to prevent teams from stashing players.

Not more games. They should be able to do more in the off-season to get players ready. It doesn’t have to be mandatory until training camp but the rules are stupid. This is a multi billion dollar industry and the prep time is almost non existent.

Perhaps you don’t know how limited the OTAs actually are???

I sure do….but the players are together for the off season program

I think that solves a lot of issues and makes the game more competitive.

I get that, but you will get a better product. Teams will be able to have players on their roster that know the system. That way when they get hit hard with injuries, they don't have to start guys off the street, which leads to ugly football.
How do you know that they won't put in an extra bye week?
Just this expansion gets starters off of special teams
eventually the deal is going to be:
extra bye week
+ higher salary cap, more $ to players (from new rev)
+ more jobs for players
= 18 games schedule deal
