Stapleton on DeVito:

Tommy DeVito looked a lot closer to QB2 than QB3 today.

Again, it's an OTA in May.

But I wouldn't be running DeVito off this team so quickly. #NYGiants

DeVito is definitely someone to monitor this spring and summer. Does he have a chance at QB2? Could he feasibly start? Was he a large reason NYG did not draft a developmental QB?

If you compare DeVito's and Jones's pre-NFL careers, DeVito's is better.

I'm not as negative on Jones as Go Terps is, but I think the above statement is accurate. DeVito gets portrayed as some kind of local yokel on BBI, but he was a stud QB at a serious football HS in NJ, and bounced around in college - his own fault to some extent - but had more wins against better competition in college than Jones did. That he bounced around, though ... I think those questioning his mental approach have valid questions - but I think he has a background showing more talent than he's getting credit for. Basically, he kind of screwed up his own college career, but during weird COVID years where a lot of odd stuff went on in CFB. He has shown talent and it's not crazy to suggest he might be better than Jones.

Omg

Enough. Can anyone understand why we took Drew Lock, whatever you think of him, despite him being a top draft choice big arm QB just a few years ago? Do the math.

Maybe DeVito's just better.

DeVito was a 4 star HS recruit. Jones was a walk on. 2nd year players usually show a big bump in performance. I don’t want to get all starry eyed but I am curious what TD will show in camp this year.

In the history of Giants summer football, Art Stapleton pegged Mike Cherry and Brian Alford as future HoFers.

Play out the remainder of the season instead of Tyrod who we knew was not in our future plans. Baffling to me we didn’t give the kid more live reps knowing the season was already lost.

I agree. We weren't in playoff contention, and Taylor was gone. Not giving DeVito more experience in a guaranteed losing season was a mistake. He didn't look much worse than either of them.
DeVito has the highest unknown upside

I think Jones is average-to-slightly-above-average at his best, but 2023 has shaken all my confidence in his ability to get back there (and his best includes a lot of scrambling too).

Lock is an advanced stats disaster. I have zero confidence he beats out Jones and if he does, it's probably a bad thing unless Daboll is some kind of wizard.

DeVito is the unknown. His conventional numbers were decent, his advanced numbers weren't, and there were things both to like and hate on his 2023 tape. A lot of rookie QBs look like shit in their first year, and many have a dichotomy where they look much better in their last 8 games than their first 8. DeVito, however, didn't even get a half-season of starts. On top of that, he was a rookie FA and production from that background is basically non-existent historically. Don't count on him but also don't count him out.

Good post. I wouldn’t put it past Daboll to be able to squeeze something out of Lock, but given that he sucked under another QB guru in Shurmur, I’m not holding out much hope.

And DeVito’s play was definitely up and down, not unexpected for a rookie. I have my doubts that he can speed up the clock in his head, but it isn’t a crazy thought to think he can.

Also needs the benefit of a minimally acceptable OL. In fact I think he'd benefit most from it.

We'll see how he does in pre-season games - which is a 2-edged sword. He needs an excellent showing to get even a practice squad spot - but if he looks really good, he'll get poached at some point.

We'll see in August. As of now I'd say odds are that this year, after pre-season, we next see Cutlets in another uniform -- or not at all.

on a team that was DOA when he got his first start.

Who knows what his future holds, but he's clearly a gamer.

That Monday Night thrill was the highlight of the season for me. After the game, I was then “Glad” Saquon fumbled the ball going down which gave Green Bay a chance to take the lead…and they did. That gave Cutlets a chance to show what he made of….and he delivered big time. Finally, we won on Prime Time, Monday Night.

Thanks again, Cutlets. I’m rooting for you bud.
He could be our Heinekie

Which I would be perfectly happy with. Win us some games when Fragile Jones goes down for his annual injury stint.

That TD strike he threw to the back of the end zone in that GB game was eye-opening.

Not a lot of memorable moments for the team last year but that throw was one of them.
