Yup
Have To

Be willing to go to the dirty areas to make things happen in this series. Take a hit, make a play. Can't be living on the perimeter.
Is Sam Rosen okay?

Biggest issue is moving puck out of defensive zone
Rick in Dallas : 5/24/2024 10:14 am : link
More North/South versus East/West passing might help
That wasn’t the best Panthers can play. They can actually bring more physicality.
I’m ready to see Zac Jones play.
Igor needs to play sharper than the first game.
Agree totally about shooting more in O zone.

Agreed. Have not looked good at all last few games. There's no stomach bug to blame it on this time either.

I'm worried about Fox, he's hobbled out there.

Doubt he’s hurt, more the latter. He’s done very little outside the goal vs Caps, which was a fumbled giveaway right in front at point blank range.

I wouldn't mind flipping Chytil and Roslovic

Ros or Vesey would be my choice (well, Rempe would be my choice, but if he's in...), though at the level these guys have all been contributing, I don't think it makes that much difference. I am glad it sounds like Chytil is staying in.
It would be awesome if Kakko
pjcas18 : 5/24/2024 1:37 pm : link
sits and the Rangers play Wheeler. lol.

If Kakko sits, I have to believe it's due to injury, not a healthy scratch. he's been a 0 offensively, but a lot of the team has and he plays better D than most.

This place would go nuts if it were for Wheeler or even Brodzinski. (this won't happen, it's between Kakko and Rempe from what Vince says and because he also says both will warm up it is IMO likely due to injury) to Kakko).

Gretzky and the talking heads after the Dallas game last night, and they were all in agreement that Rempe needs to get in the lineup somewhere. Said he can play physical and is decent with the puck, while stating the Rangers have change some things up starting with him.

I think you all discussed Rempe in the previous game thread, so your thoughts about that were definitely in line with the "experts". I definitely respect Gretzky and what he says.

Anyways, we definitely need this tonight.....

Here is my unpopular
SJGiant : 5/24/2024 2:20 pm : link
Opinion. Dress 7 defensemen, playing Jones on the third or fourth line. Dress Rempee. Sit two of the other forwards who played game 1. When the fights occur, you have jones to play defense and therefore you won’t overplay a hurt Fox. Crazy opinion.

Let's get an injection of slowness into the lineup!

I'm almost 100% sure that isn't happening though.

As pj said, I don't like benching Kakko because, even if he's not doing much offensively, he's still their best defensive forward.
I like Rempe but he is not the answer
Rick in Dallas : 5/24/2024 3:10 pm : link
Kakko is a better all around player than Rempe. No question!!!
If the Rangers D can’t get the puck out of the D zone what the hell is Rempe going to do????
Also what happens when the Panthers turn the heat up more physically?
Wednesday night was not their best effort.
It’s time for the Rangers to man up.
In the last 3 games they have played one awesome period the third against the Canes.
Correct me if I'm wrong but Gallant was fired and
arniefez : 5/24/2024 3:11 pm : link
Laviolette was hired for in Gallant's case not making strategic coaching adjustments during the playoffs and in Laviolette's case because he can.

Well if Laviolette has got any adjustments that will make the Rangers competitive with Florida now would be the time to make them.

Game 1 reminded me of a Rangers vs Flyers playoff series in the early 1970s.

Never mind that it was KK's deft outlet that sprung Schneider on the hit the pipe breakaway, threaded it between two CAR d-men.

BrettNYG10 : 5/24/2024 3:30 pm : link
Kakko was also the one who missed the net by like a foot in the third on the pass from Gustafson, right?

I think the third line has been really good. Just not putting pucks in the net.

Kyle in NY : 5/24/2024 3:42 pm : link
It's not the move I'd make (I'd probably sit Vesey if they want to bring in Rempe) but I'm also not going to be as frustrated by it as I was two years ago when Gallant did it. At some point there needs to be a hint of offensive instincts shown by Kakko. He does a lot of good things in possession. But there is so little production to show for it and it rarely feels like he's even looking to push for his own offense. Sort of just content to cycle the puck and get off. It has value for a depth player, but where is the growth? Non-center, doesn't play much special teams, I can understand if he's the odd man out. Offseason topic, but feels like a fresh start is needed

dlauster, posted the following in SCP thread after Game 6 win over CAR and before Wed night:
Quote:
Since 2022, I've critiqued CK (and Zib) loud and often for their disappearing acts in SCP. It's a good thing I wasn't around last week because I may not have been able to hold my tongue through periods 1 and 2 Thursday night (still haven't seen it) and would likely have eaten major crow. But Thursday is not the end of it, it only marked a new beginning. I will almost guarantee that the team's bi-polar ability is alive and well. Every team has its periods of poor play and wtf moments, it just seems like the Rangers' are uglier than most. Valiquette doesn't spare them (or the 'less than 100%' of particular players), he speaks in code. You're in good company.

Roslovic (Kyle spot on earlier: his mind-numbingly unnecessary high stick behind Bob's net essentially ended the team's great start to 2nd and he is a fly by checker, i.e., he doesn't) and Wennberg have been underwhelming at best, not the Copp and Vatrano of '22. All the folks clamoring for Chytil to play more--I don't know what they expect from a guy who hasn't played since November due to a debilitating injury/condition.
And a bunch of us said it then: Lavvy's benching of Jones with 5-6 games left in regular season was a mistake: yeah, he's not big and not esp. physical and he's a mismatch for FLA's powerful Fs, but right now Fox is hobbled and it's also affecting his decision making.
Kakko leads the team in xGF with 59.9%
Greg from LI : 5/24/2024 4:15 pm : link
And has been on the ice for only two opposition goals through the playoffs. Sure, he's the problem.

Yeah, I get it, he's not scoring. But he isn't hurting them either, not by a long shot.

did anyone catch Maurice's comments mid-1st to Emily Kaplan--oh, my! Maybe I'm old (I am) but did you see her dress, almost Calgary Stampede stuff! I'm becoming a fan--as I heard Maurice, he essentially said he didn't care if Barkov, this season's Frank Selke Award winner, wasn't line matched against Zib and company, the import to me being that NYR 'first' line does not cause particular concern. Now why would that be?

One last: we were at Rehoboth last week visiting good friends in Lewes, DE, so I was out of town for Game 6, a good luck charm no doubt. Many will be glad to know we're out of the country from end of May through mid-June, so victory over the Panthers is assured.

A third line winger is controlling puck possession, playing great defensive hockey, but not scoring... I mean, that's why he's on the third line.

I don't think he would be sitting as a healthy scratch. Would he? I hadn't heard that explanation.

but...xGF% is not really an individual stat IMO (any more than plus minus is - and Kakko is 12th on the team in plus minus with negative 1). Further to that, Kakko has just 2 points in the playoffs. Only a few players on the team who have played more than 2 playoff games have less ppg (Cuylle who is 2nd in hits for forwards, Wennberg and Rempe who is statistically basically tied with Kakko in ppg for the playoffs).

Again though, I wasn't suggesting to sit Kakko as a healthy scratch and it doesn't sound like that's why he'd sit - it seems like an injury otherwise why would he warm up)?

No, that's why he should be on the 4th line or AHL
Mercogliano suggests that he may be a healthy scratch
Greg from LI : 5/24/2024 4:34 pm : link
Quote:
He's declined to reveal his lineup choices to the media and took the additional step of masking combinations at Friday's morning skate, adding intrigue in the lead-up to 8 p.m. puck drop against the Florida Panthers at Madison Square Garden.

There were a few hints, with Filip Chytil wearing the same blue jersey as top-liners Chris Kreider and Mika Zibanejad while trade-deadline addition Jack Roslovic dropped down to bottom-six group. And then there was Rempe and Kaapo Kakko staying on the ice a bit later than the rest of the regulars, but also coming off before the known healthy scratches.

The simple math says that one of those two can't play in Game 2 of this Eastern Conference Final, but then again, Laviolette has pulled the old switch-a-roo a few times already in these playoffs.
Bottom line
Greg from LI : 5/24/2024 4:36 pm : link
They need the top lines to step up to win, plain and simple. Six minutes of Matt Rempe instead of Kakko isn't going to move the needle at all when it comes to putting pucks in nets.

I hear you, but a third line for a team trying to win the cup has to contribute more than 2 goals in 11 games. It's not just about zone time and possession

4 goals 9 points in 40 playoff games for KK playing mostly 3rd line minutes. I like the kid but at some point you need more. I still wouldn't take him out. But it's not egregious
....
BrettNYG10 : 5/24/2024 4:41 pm : link
Yes, it's not about zone time and possession but Kakko does something few forwards on this team do well.

Sit Vesey over him. Sitting Kakko is dumb.
But why him
Greg from LI : 5/24/2024 4:42 pm : link
and not anyone else from the bottom six who doesn't play the great defense he plays?
.
Kyle in NY : 5/24/2024 4:56 pm : link
I'm guessing because Vesey is one of the penalty killers while Cuylle can play center and brings a physical element. I'd still sit Vesey
