The Athletic: Top 150 Free Agent Update

M.S. : 5/24/2024 11:31 am
Full disclosure: Looks like they stopped updating this list a few weeks ago so I filled in the FA destinations for about a dozen players.

Based on my count, there are still 20 Free Agents remaining, with Justin Simmons the highest -- 22nd Ranked:

22 Justin Simmons, S, Broncos (30)
58 Marcus Maye, S, Saints (31)
59 Steven Nelson, CB, Texans (31)
64 Calais Campbell, DT, Falcons (38)
66 Stephon Gilmore, CB, Cowboys (33)
73 Mason Cole, C, Steelers (28)
78 Xavien Howard, CB, Dolphins (31)
84 Tre Herndon, CB, Jaguars (28)
96 Ryan Tannehill, QB, Titans (36)
99 Charles Leno Jr., OT, Commanders (32)
103 Byron Pringle, WR, Commanders (30)
109 Connor Williams, C, Dolphins (27)
112 Quandre Diggs, S, Seahawks (31)
115 Tashaun Gipson Sr., S, 49ers (34)
116 Mark Glowinski, G, Giants (32)
118 Dalton Risner, G, Vikings (29)
122 Geoff Swaim, TE, Cardinals (30)
123 Dalvin Cook, RB, Ravens (29)
136 Adoree’ Jackson, CB, Giants (28)
150 Jamal Adams, S, Seahawks (28)

So far, 9 teams have signed at least 5 Free Agents, with Washington leading the way with 10 (two of whom were re-signings):

Washington Commanders 10
Carolina Panthers 8
Miami Dolphins 8
Tennesse Titans 7
New England Patriots 6
Philadelphia Eagles 6
Houston Texans 5
Seattle Seahawks 5
Tampa Bay 5

Carolina made a significant effort to bulk up their LOS with 6 signings:

Defense
27 Jadeveon Clowney, Edge, Ravens (31)
36 D.J. Wonnum, Edge, Vikings (26)
41 A’Shawn Robinson, DT, Giants (29)

Offense
39 Robert Hunt, G, Dolphins (28)
102 Yosh Nijman, OT, Packers (28)
108 Damien Lewis, G, Seahawks (27)

The Titans addressed their offensive woes devoting 6 of their 7 Free Agents to that unit:

9 Lloyd Cushenberry III, C, Broncos (26)
13 Calvin Ridley, WR, Jaguars (29)
81 Saahdiq Charles, G, Commanders (25)
93 Tony Pollard, RB, Cowboys (27)
110 Mason Rudolph, QB, Steelers (29)
137 Tyler Boyd, WR, Bengals (29)

Wow has Jamal Adams fallen

Former all-pro (1st team once, 2nd team twice) and only 28 years old, and no one wants him.

I get Seattle wishes they never traded two 1st rounders for him.
Great post!

Ryan Tannehill sticks out to me like a sore thumb.

He's better than some presumptive starters in the league and would be an improvement over pretty much any backup I can think of.

Guess he's just sitting back and waiting to pick his spot once someone else flames out or there's an injury.
Lots of CBs

Don't know well enough what they bring to the table, but the inventory is good. Any thoughts from those in the know?

Anybody got anything on that Adoree fella? Great name and pretty young guy. Bring the wood as a tackler?

Honestly don't know anything about that Jags CB but gotta assume all those guys are waiting for training camp injuries or teams whose DB corps don't do well to cut a deal. And I'm sure Simmons is in the same mindset. And I'm still pissed the Giants passed on Simmons in the draft when he came out. One more Jerry Reese fuck up. I even forgot who they drafted to pass on him.

I mentioned in another thread that I wanted him over Lock. Veteran presence that can start and push DJ. Especially with DJ's frailty, at least we would have a chance with Tannehill instead of Lock.
Howard and Herndon make the most sense

for the Giants, maybe Gilmore if he has anything left in the tank. I could see NYG signing another CB.
Justin Simmons

Like so many other Drafts, the Giants in 2016 failed miserably:

1 10 New York Giants Eli Apple CB Ohio State Big Ten
2 40 New York Giants Sterling Shepard WR Oklahoma Big 12
3 71 New York Giants Darian Thompson S Boise State MW
4 109 New York Giants B. J. Goodson LB Clemson ACC
5 149 New York Giants Paul Perkins RB UCLA Pac-12
6 184 New York Giants Jerell Adams TE South Carolina SEC

Thanks. He seemed the perfect pick. A lot of people wanted Simmons here IIRC

I really wanted gilmore. Think he'd do well in this system.

Yeah it's crazy but it's due to how the nfl defense is moving away from his style of play.
Dalton Risner,

Darian Thompson had an extremely poor combine, while Justin Simmons had a spectacular one.

The Thompson pick was justified by his having more production in college (more INTs).

A lot of people favor that approach to drafting players, in concept. I don't, as a rule.

I have a very specific recollection of my draft night reaction to the Thompson pick: "Darian Thompson instead of Justin Simmons, blah de blah blah."

And a blah player Thompson indeed turned out to be.
