The official lineup isn't out yet but, according to Jomboy, Boone told him LeMahieu makes his return tonight:

Talkin' Yanks

@TalkinYanks
Aaron Boone says this is the lineup tonight:

Anthony Volpe, SS
Juan Soto, RF
Aaron Judge, CF
Alex Verdugo, LF
Giancarlo Stanton, DH
Anthony Rizzo, 1B
Gleyber Torres, 2B
Austin Wells, C
DJ LeMahieu, 3B

I like DJLM as a #9 hitter better than
Del Shofner : 5/28/2024 4:03 pm : link
as a leadoff hitter. If he's in form (somewhat of a big "if" IMO), that could be a good bottom of the lineup.
I'm very curious to see how he looks.
Matt M. : 5/28/2024 4:04 pm : link
He needs to be better than he was the last 2 years.
Frankly, I'm not expecting too much
Greg from LI : 5/28/2024 4:10 pm : link
It's been a while since he was a)an impact player b)able to stay healthy. And now he's almost 36.

Maybe he'll surprise me.

🤞

I'm lukewarm anyway because he's slow. But if he can produce at his 21/22 level he'd be great to keep at #9.
I love DJ
RasputinPrime : 5/28/2024 9:01 pm : link
but i don't love his gangly aging body. I have zero expectations of him out there and hope he is used in a rotation at 3B and 1B.

There’s one hitter on the angels you can’t let beat you right now. And there was a base open so what does he do? Meatball with no bite down the middle smdh

Yes. Was thinking the same. Wells right to the wall. Thought that was gone.
Wells' knock would have been a HR in 26/30 parks
shyster : 5/28/2024 10:56 pm : link
per Statcast. Way out in YS. Bad luck.
Wells comes through this time with a RBI double.
bceagle05 : 5/28/2024 10:59 pm : link
He’s hit into some tough luck this year.
Wells whacked that one

3-2

Torres going on that? He was out by a Stantonian mile.

love watching this team

with 5 healthy starters that give different looks. I hope we go with a 6 man rotation when Cole is being eased back in. I have to think Gil will be on an innings limit at some point.
i'd love to know

how we could snag Rengifo from the Angels. Let's take on that Trout contract if we have to.

Same guy that bungled two grounders tonight.
Stanton should be drawing a lot more walks then he does
xman : 5/28/2024 11:26 pm : link
so I guess he is swinging at bad pitches which costs him plenty ..

Or we could just wait for Durbin to force his way into the room.
More shaky defense at 1B.

Disagree. Weaver struggled that inning. Schanuel should have walked. No problem bringing in Holmes there he just got beat. You go down with your closer.

There was no reason to remove Weaver was there.

Rizzo, error was before the pitching change.

late error costs them the game.

Great night with the Rangers losing in OT..
What a fucking shitty game to lose
LW_Giants : 5/29/2024 12:07 am : link
all because Rizzo turned into a horrible fielder overnight.

They cannot keep trotting him out there in the late innings, have to find a better defensive replacement.
Fucking Rizzo.
Dave in Hoboken : 5/29/2024 12:08 am : link
God, I really can't stand him sometimes.
I've said it before...I think Rizzo still has some ill effects

Losing to the shitty goddamned Angels without Trout
Greg from LI : 5/29/2024 12:20 am : link
Awful. I don’t know how much longer they can keep running Rizzo out there if he keeps botching routine plays. Maybe you can live with it if he’s hitting well but he’s not doing that either.
Orioles lost, so that's good.
Dave in Hoboken : 5/29/2024 12:24 am : link
Really starting to dislike Rizzo, though. Dude has to get it together fast because he hasn't been good at all at anything this season.

Or Cabrera. But I think the plan is DJ to spell Rizzo with Cabrera at 3rd.
DJ is competent, but not really a 1B.
Rizzo is now tied for first in the league in errors
LW_Giants : 5/29/2024 12:40 am : link
among first baseman in the MLB. We cannot keep letting him take the field after the 7th inning in close games. There has to be someone in AAA or available that can play first base at a basic level of competence.
After his hot start, Cabrera has been horrid
Greg from LI : 5/29/2024 12:40 am : link
Don’t really want him in the lineup much either.

I’m guessing they’re going to need to make a deal for a 1B.
Cabrera slashing .207/.245/.250 (.495 OPS) since April 20
shyster : 5/29/2024 12:41 am : link
I'm pretty sure OC was on the way to being phased out, but the Berti injury screwed that up.

Peraza needs to stay at AAA and hit better. Caleb Durbin has put up some great stats but I don't know if he is a major league 3B or more of a 2B.

All of which makes it hard to move DJL off 3B to even try to be an answer at 1B.

As for bringing up a !B
shyster : 5/29/2024 12:44 am : link
I don't get the impression that either Ben Rice (AA) or TJ Rumfield (AAA) are defensive plusses at 1B.
DJ will be the in-season answer at 1B
RasputinPrime : 5/29/2024 12:52 am : link
and Durbin/Peraza will play there way into the rotation. It's a long season and we mostly need to focus on staying healthy because clearly we have the talent to take the division from the O's.

He struggled?

Yes he did. Fell behind Calhoun and gave up a hit. 2nd batter smoked one right at Gleyber and then should have walked Schanuel and got bailed out by him swinging at a pitch a foot high. So yes he struggled that inning. You don’t kill the manager going to his closer where. It didn’t work out. Sometimes good relievers give up hits. It happens. it’s not always the manager’s fault.
our BP is clearly going to be a balancing act
RasputinPrime : 5/29/2024 3:15 am : link
and the sooner we find out if Weaver can be trusted in high leverage spots, the better. We are going to need at least two upgrades for this pen at some point. I'd love Gomez and Marinaccio to get a good look soon.

Weaver was doing fine. He got two outs. Schnauel's K is normal for Weaver - players swinging at high strikes is where power pitchers get many Ks.
Yes I do kill the manager. They already had an effective pitcher on the mound. Holmes is effective once he starts rolling, but his 1st batter seems to be a struggle and almost always an adventure. Just his M.O. How many times does he walk the 1st batter?

But the "now hit" off Rizzo's glove was the problem. Yes the scorer changed it to a hit after the game...pathetic.

They also had many chances to put up more runs throughout the game. In effect, a total team failure.
The bullpen needs work for the playoffs, the two former Dodgers
Jim in Hoboken : 5/29/2024 6:16 pm : link
lefties won't get anybody out in crunch time. You can't rely on Kanhle as the one reliever to get a tough lefty out.

It looks like we won't have any clue about the right side of the INF going into next year. Torres and Rizzo won't be back, so we plug in Vivas/Peraza and DJ? How about 3B?

Payroll without Soto is 200M, with Soto probably 250M, is Hal going to okay a 300M payroll?
