Roster Musings heading into June 1

DavidinBMNY : 5/28/2024 7:16 pm
There are a few players I am curious to see what the Giants do with this off season. They are 2 of the more consistently
injury Prone players: Azeez and Aaron Robinson have had a lot of injuries. The story has been yearly "if they can stay healthy" and neither player has really come close to a sustained run of availability. If entering this season its more of the same, is enough, enough? Availability is really important. These 2 are in the last year of their deals, have vested as 3 year vets and have been given ample chances. And neither player was drafted by this regime.

While I hope both have great seasons, the consistent historical data suggests otherwise. In hindsight the Giants kept Shane Lemiux one year longer then they should have. He also had a series of unfortunate injuries. If these 2 trend as they have been trending, I'd prefer the Giants part ways.

I don't think Aaron Robinson has seen the field since the Bears game in October '22.

Good points

Get rid of a cheap Pass Rusher who when healthy has shown some good ability and a cheap CB who was going to start before getting hurt.
I honestly forgot Robinson was still a NYG player
djm : 5/28/2024 7:23 pm : link
I hope he has a great career but yeah, he’s never had a month here to get excited over. The coaches see something so let’s hope he finally gets healthy. Ojulari can be a double digit sack guy. He could land a big contract and become a household name. He could also be out of the league in 2-3 seasons. Big year for him.
I think A.Robinson was only injured once badly but

Azeez has no competition
Blue Dog : 5/28/2024 7:35 pm : link
And I believe he is healthy for the time being. He pretty much makes it by default if he makes it through preseason in one piece.

Right. One injury but, it seems, complications in his rehab.

. Or a counterpoint, cost aside, is make plans with players who are reliably available.

Robinson had a very serious knee injury with multiple tears, so much so that he wasn't able to be activated at all last season. Prior to that I recall he had his appendix removed, so basically, he has barely been available. This is is 4th season and he has played in 11 games. So he was something like 9/16, 2/17 , 0/17.
Azeez’s potential and price tag
eric2425ny : 5/28/2024 8:04 pm : link
make him a must keep this year IMO. If he stays healthy for even 2/3 of a season they will have the best trio of pass rushers they have had in years.
Azeez is a true enigma… but given a new DC and a new training staff,
Spider56 : 5/28/2024 8:28 pm : link
He deserves 1 more chance.

2 key Giant draft picks
Chris684 : 5/28/2024 8:47 pm : link
Have huge seasons coming up, Neal and Azeez.

If they don’t play and play well this year, not only will they be done here, but it’s hard to imagine much success for the team if they continue to miss time/underperform.

If they can bounce back though, all of a sudden you’re probably talking about a good offensive line and a deep pass rush. 2 staples of a good football team.

Ojulari is likely gone after this season. If he has a big year he’ll want more than the Giants can afford or will want to pay given his injury history. There’s always a team out there that will overpay. If he has another injury filled year he will be out with his contract about to expire.

Neal will stick around I think in 2025 unless he implodes this season. This is year three of a four year deal. When you pick a player that high he’s going to play out his four years unless he’s traded or is a complete disaster.
There is no one on the roster
Bill in UT : 5/28/2024 9:13 pm : link
after Burns and Thibs who is close to Azeez in talent. You've got to keep him on a rookie deal. Robinson never gets on the field, an easy cut unless he suddenly jumps out and can play
Why the hell
Breeze_94 : 5/28/2024 11:28 pm : link
Would they dump Azeez. What is the benefit? He’s cheap and far and away the best rotational piece they have at edge rusher. And he’s only 24…it’s not unheard of for a guy who has shown flashes to finally put it together in his age 24 season.

He actually was injured when Gettleman drafted him. He had a core injury that needed surgery after the Giants drafted him (nice scouting Gettleman) and was on the PUP list all of his rookie training camp.

Given his injury problems, I wouldn't be in favor of signing Azeez to

a 2nd contract, but I see no reason to dump him. When healthy, he's a starting caliber edge.

Gotta feel bad for any kid what tough situation but can't get on the field you can't count on any player. Waller is in this group IMO.
Azeez is an important piece on the roster this year
UberAlias : 5/29/2024 8:35 am : link
Given the overall lack of depth at the position and need for rotation. But even given that, I would consider trading him if I could get value in return for a pick. It would be a loss to the defense, but I would be trying to acquire draft assets for potential play for a QB, and we are short on marketable commodities.

Regardless of prevailing opinions, my take is the Giants are in win-now mode this year.

They won't be looking to trade contributers for future assets unless we're in-season and they get off to a horrible start.

It's likely more about what the Giants need rather than what AO deserves.
No reason to dump Azeez

Just got to assume anything you get from him is a bonus. He’s never healthy for all his talent.
