it's almost June. I'm surprised he hasn't announced it yet, and given how close we are, what's everyone's best guess at this point. This is not a question of what you want, but a question of what will happen. Will Waller be at training camp with plans to play the season---Yes or No?
No offense CMicks but who really gives a fuck? I mean I know people do but it doesn't change anything for us. It wouldn't surprise me to hear that they've been communicating and Waller already let them know. When he does something, great. He's not stopping us from doing anything.

I actually liked that there was no announcement before the draft. If there was it would have made it tougher to get a prospect like Johnson where they did.
He’s a favorable matchup against most safeties and LB’s, and was much better last year than you’d think after reading this board.
Having him helps Nabers, Wan’Dale and the other receivers. Makes the field harder to defend. And helps Jones too as they currently lack a
big-bodied redzone/middle of the field target without Waller.

Agreed, even at 70% of what he was a few years back he’s a weapon. Especially with Nabers, an improving Wan’Dale, and a speedster like Hyatt.
Subtle lol
If he comes back on his current contract, he gets paid $12M for 2024. That's fully guaranteed as of Week 1.
And then he would still be a $6M dead cap hit for 2025, if Giants want to move on after this year.
So if he comes back for his money in 2024, but gets injured (or isn't motivated), it's another big chunk of dough down the drain.
Doubt they'd ever cut him. There is no reason to just give up his rights. They can designate him as reserve/retired at any point whether he comes out and retires or not. The money saved would be the same as cutting if he never comes back, but he can't go to another team. If he keeps dragging his feet but comes back too late they could keep him as a reserve while he gets in shape and they would only pay his prorated salary for the games he's activated.
For good or ill, I think Waller is here until his personal issues are resolved.
Sunk cost. It isn't if he's worth the $12M because you don't get it all back by cutting him. It would be if he's worth the $6.7M saved.
Maybe if he starts missing the mandatory program, that might give them more incentive to fill the roster spot differently.

Giants do stand to save $12M cash by cutting him and every dollar not spent is, ultimately, a dollar of cap space saved.
They don't get $12N in cap space in 2024 from cutting him because of money they have already paid him that would count as dead cap. But they save the $12M cash and that frees up $12M cap space over this year and next.

The post June 1 cut moves $5M in dead money to next year. That will be the only option very soon obviously, but it is just taking the money from next year's cap space. Not spending the extra cash now now would roll it over and cancel it out.
Good riddance.
To me, it is that he mostly played soft and was unimpactful when he wasn't injured that was particularly bothersome. He left plays on the field that you want to see a tall athletic TE make, was pretty sad blocking outside on WR screens and such, and
Shuffling our challenged QBs in-and-out all year didn't help but also recall Waller getting outmuscled by a defender on a bunch of contested throws too. He needed to be a more go-to guy and simply wasn't for most of the games.
Waller is a good guy, and what he can provide on the field when he's healthy is great.
I hope he's getting some help with his troubles.

He wasn't very good when healthy last year, I think the injuries have taken their toll. Part of me wonders if he's hoping the Giants cut him so he can get paid and play for someone else?

But the fans who are hoping he retires confuse me. I don’t see any way the Giants offense isn’t better with Waller on the field - even if he misses a few games here and there.

He was actually still pretty good, just not anything close to his prime years. He was on pace for 782 yards, that would have been 8th for TEs and more than Engram ever had here. You have to go back to Shockey in 2005 for a TE to produce more. With Theo Johnson here, and the two blocking specialists which will open up Bellinger, hopefully if he does stick around that those additions help keep him upright.
With the news of his pending divorce and his history of substance abuse, I hope the Giants are giving him the time and support he needs. I know we are all just fans of the team, but he's a real person with some issues. I'd hate to read about him harming himself or worse.
I'm of that opinion too. They need the cap space anyway. As long as they're happy with what they've got at TE, then send him packing.
totally agree. nabers, robinson, hyatt/slayton, and waller could be a really, really good group when healthy
amen.
