Giants Huddle Revisits pre-draft interviews for draft class

Eric on Li : 6/2/2024 3:58 pm
the giants huddle went through and found some of the people they interviewed closest to the programs of the players drafted and cut together their various comments on each player prior to when the giants selected them.

pretty good listen, there were 2 notable things I heard that I hadnt seen anywhere else post-draft.

1. Re Phillips, the guy who followed UK closely had an interesting point comparing him to 2023 CB Carrington Valentine who went to the Packers as a 7th round pick and then played a big role as a rookie. UK people may have thought he was a little raw or entering the NFL a year too early, but then he went on to have success. He credited Mark Stoops and his background of success with DBs in his program having a good track record of sending guys to the NFL more ready than may seem.

Valentine like Phillips was a really good athlete but lacking ball production with just 1 INT in his 3 years at UK.

Valentine started 12 games for packers last year playing 424 coverage snaps, mostly at outside CB.

2. similarly the PSU interviewee commenting on Theo Johnson brought up Brenton Strange who went to the Jaguars in round 2 last year. he didnt do much as a rookie behind Engram and Luke Farrell, but it's interesting to note that PSU has been pumping out pro level TEs pretty consistently (Freiermuth was a fav of mine in 2021). He also put up pedestrian numbers at PSU but tested really well, though not as well as Theo Johnson.
