Waller expected to retire

jeff57 : 6/3/2024 8:53 am
According to Raanan.

New York Giants tight end Darren Waller is likely to make a decision by next week's mandatory minicamp about his playing future and people in and around the team expect that he's going to retire, multiple sources told ESPN. Those close to him believe he's leaning in that direction.

It is, but we're better off without him. Waller is another if/but guy, and we've had enough of those after the last 10 seasons. Even when he was healthy last year he was a "helpful" player. Not a dynamic one.

Wish him the best.
There was a homeless guy who used to go around collecting
ATL_Giants : 6/3/2024 9:16 am : link
cans from trash bins around campus, and I was always curious about him because I wasn't from that town.
Turns out he was a brilliant and successful engineer, but his wife cheated and they divorced. Apparently, he preferred to collect cans rather than having any income that would be awarded to his ex as alimony.

So I can't help but wonder if retiring from the NFL is in some way, a middle-finger to the ex-wife.
I don't think a marriage that lasted a year
gidiefor : Mod : 6/3/2024 9:21 am : link
qualifies for much alimony rights -- so I don't understand this how some of you are arriving at the spousal share of his salary line of reasoning as a reason for retirement
Is there really much drama to the decision
Shecky : 6/3/2024 9:24 am : link
Does someone actually publicly announce they will be announcing their decision? When the decision is t a change, but status quo?

Other than drama queens like Favre or Rodgers, 99% of the time an “announcement” is retirement rather than continuing to play.

He has the opportunity to make it in his 30’s. It’s very tough when your work defines your life.
it's a weird situation.behind it
HBart : 6/3/2024 9:30 am : link
The guy marries a Vegas-based athlete - just an hour plane ride. Then he gets traded and that life plan goes in the round file. Meanwhile he's frustrated at being hurt all the time and thinking he wants to be a rapper.

No idea about his marriage but it's possible he's thinking closing the distance gap would save it. He might also be considering the reception to his rap release.

I'd call it understandably weird.

In any case, happy to see him retire if he does. He's not dependable and it's an easy cap solution.
May not be as weird as we think
bc4life : 6/3/2024 9:34 am : link
He knows, and I suspect the team knows what is going on - the issue is we don't know. But, I'm guessing he's gone and, I think their TE room (others beside Waller) looks better than last year

Exactly.
The sooner he retires the better.
Optimus-NY : 6/3/2024 10:10 am : link
The Giants will get almost 12 mill in added cap space as a result. If he decides to unretire in training camp, cut his butt and let him go elsewhere because quite frankly the most appealing thing about him right now is the cap space he would provide if he was off the team. This is his last chance.

The ONLY way he could stay at this point is if he takes a massive pay cut, agrees to a backup role, and commits himself fully to football. None of that's happening of course. He's injury-prone, has mental health issues, and has mentally checked out of the Giants. He might still want to play football elsewhere though. That shouldn't be the Giants' problem though. They've covered their bases at the TE position this offseason and can stomach him going bye-bye.
I wonder if the Giants did ask him to take a pay cut and

I can believe that.

The Giants signing Manhertz and Stoll plus drafting Theo tells us they planned on it, as well.
Wasn't going to be part of the team long anyway
mfsd : 6/3/2024 10:58 am : link
we were probably looking at another injury prone so-so season followed by him getting cut next offseason. Retiring early makes it easy for the Giants
Even if Waller tells the Giants he's retiring
shyster : 6/3/2024 11:11 am : link
or even if he publicly announces it, it's not necessarily irrevocable.

Since the Giants haven't cut Waller yet, they will probably put him on the reserve/retired list, to retain his rights and prevent him from playing anywhere he pleases.

If Waller at any time then says: I changed my mind; I want to un-retire, Giants are faced with the same issues they have been facing all along. Do they pay him according to the terms of his contract? Do they try to get him to agree to reduce his compensation (since it isn't guaranteed)? Or do they release him?

They must have. If he were to come back, there's no way it would've been at his current cap number.

They release him. They need to cap space more than they need him. Bellinger and Johnson will ultimately answer this question though.

I'm sure he could have found more creative ways to hide income.

of him wanting to return to the NFL next year, followed by his not wanting to play for the Giants, followed by our trying to deal him for a pick - any pick, followed by our outright releasing him b/c no one is willing to give anything for him, followed by him signing with either the Cards for a one year deal worth less than what he would have made as a Giant this year OR the Chiefs and making the SB game winning TD catch.

Mark it down.

Is that he was due to make 14 million this year. All guaranteed, all he had to do was ..not retire. He is a terrible,I mean awful rapper. Horrendous. All he had to do was keep it together for one more season. He started late or got found late, I am not saying he doesn't have $ but if he treated this as his last year and banked what he made I think he could have doubled his net worth and at 33 being worth 5 million or being worth 10 million is a big difference. As a Giant fan I am thrilled if this is true get him the F off this team and let our young and talented TE room blossom. Give us much much needed cap relief.

Ok - how about - the Giants and Waller mutually agree that moving on would be in both parties' best interest.

it wasn't meant to be a knock on the NYG.

The Giants acquired Waller on a contract with no guaranteed money, and he earned 12M last year. It was a medium risk move with the cash and pick involved that didn't work out. It was hardly a tragedy.

The big injustice he's put the Giants through is skipping the voluntary portion of the offseason.

Waller is older in football years, has earned 43M in his career, is a recovering addict (with an OD in his past), and reportedly has a nerve issue in his hamstring.

Judging by the organization's actions, they're moving on. They drafted a player who fits his exact profile and added two blocking TEs.

The best thing to do when Waller comes in and passes a physical is to cut him. If he chooses to play football elsewhere, God bless him.

Manny in CA : 6/3/2024 4:58 pm : link

But it's almost as if he's looking for somebody (anybody) to punish for it. On top-of-that, it has to be hard for every pro player to face the reality when your body just can't do what you love - A double whammy.

The whole thing is complicated, emotionally & business-wise; the Giants they just need to move on.

Not sure people are angry as much as they are pointing out how bad his music is. If he was good at creating music he would t be taking as much heat for not “deciding” on his future in the NFL.

The music is embarrassing, no other way to describe it.
It's one thing to say he's made $43M in the NFL...
Milton : 6/4/2024 6:34 am : link
That's plenty of money and enough for just about anybody to live the rest of their lives on. It's another thing to say you have a chance to make more than 25% of your career earnings in one year if you're willing to put in an extra six or seven months of work.
p.s.--He may very well file his retirement papers, but I doubt that's the last we've heard of him. What is the punishment in fines for a player who files for retirement in June and changes his mind at the end of August? Is it the same as if he simply held out of training camp?

christian : 6/4/2024 7:57 am : link
But the chances of him making that additional 25% was slim before his indecision, and is all but guaranteed not to happen now.

Waller isn't durable, is expensive, and the Giants have replaced everything they were hoping he would be. They have a bona fide number one pass catcher, drafted a receiving TE, and signed two blocking TEs.

If he retires, and then pulls a stint and changes his mind, he'll simply be cut.
Not angry at Waller for sucking
The Jake : 6/4/2024 8:04 am : link
I’m angry at Schoen for thinking this would end any other way.

We acquired a 30 year old oft injured, mentally unstable has been with a gigantic fork sticking out of his back, and stunted the growth of the only promising TE on the roster at the time. It was a dumb fucking move from jump.
