Waller expected to retire

jeff57 : 6/3/2024 8:53 am
According to Raanan.

New York Giants tight end Darren Waller is likely to make a decision by next week's mandatory minicamp about his playing future and people in and around the team expect that he's going to retire, multiple sources told ESPN. Those close to him believe he's leaning in that direction.

None of us have detailed info on his current health

Maybe his body is broken down and he is a shell of the man who dominated a few years ago. Maybe he is as healthy as he's been since his dominant days. If it's the latter, he would be a significant asset to our passing game (which is why Schoen made the gambe in the first place (if it wasn't a gamble, he would've cost a helluva lot more than late 3rd and 6th round picks, and as we know, gambles don't always pay off; but it doesn't mean you stop gambling because everything is a gamble when it comes to personnel)).

We don't know the snap shot details of his health, but we know he's missed big chunks of three out of the four last seasons. And we know from his own mouth he had a nerve issue in his hamstring last year. We also know the Giants made significant investments to replace him.

Ask yourself this question: would you sign Darren Waller today to a 1/10M+ contract?

And this question: if Darren Waller was an UFA would he command a 1/10M+ contract on the open market?

Then why hasn't he already been released? Is it out of fear of an injury settlement being forced upon them?

I think the Giants are proceeding cautiously so there is no hint of retaliation for not attending voluntarily activities and because of his health and the possibility of a grievance.

I also think the Giants are being respectful of him as a person going through a tough personal situation and that he's a recovering addict.

What evidence is there to support this claim?

Thought it was an awesome trade. Turns out, not so awesome. Better that he moves along and we recoup that money. Wish him well in retirement but giving up that 3rd rounder looks pretty bad right about now. The value was good on the surface.

Don't give the giants too much credit now. They're mostly wary of a grievance. They don't have time for his personal situation.

At a minimum it's good PR to give him the space to make his own decision. And practically they don't want to risk a grievance.

The odds in my view are supremely low Waller is a Giant again. I'd put the chance at close to zero.
