Unknown rookie with a great camp and then struggled as a rookie. But with all the dysfunction to start the year and how the season just got to be a hot mess - this is a guy who seems to be under the radar. Not sure what to expect - but it would be great if he took the next step and solidified our secondary.
There has been a couple of positive reports recently, which is encouraging. But the mental side is real. I think we have to be patient here.
But the hype about him last summer was unreal.
What he lacked was the ability to tackle. He needs to get that.
Tools are there, just needs to figure out the game. He could still be a year or two away from playable.
Lots of competition, but I expect Hawkins and Nubin have slots that are theirs to lose.
A smart HC tells his position coaches to develop, develop, develop the young kids on the team. Hawkins has athletic talent and a great body (length, speed, hip flipping) for a CB. He just needs development and getting some experience under his belt. From all I've read, he's very coachable with a good attitude. Hopefully, with the right development, he becomes a valuable piece to the defense.
My biggest fear is that he was shell shocked when stepping into a game and losing that very necessary attribute, confidence.

Based on comments from the coaches this spring, Flott is the guy who has a slot at outside CB if he can keep it.
He was way over hyped last year.
So, don't fret.

What Kool-Aid? Those are Sy's game comments and they are accurate.
Even late last season, the coaching staff was saying his future is very bright.
I swear some of you guys don't understand player development at all.
Hawkins has almost ideal physical traits for the position.
And some people are writing him off?
Weird.
The reporters kept asking questions about him because they couldn't hide he was starting. The only "hype" was Wink's positive comments when asked about him.
"Controlled Aggression" is a challenge for all athletes who want to be the best. Hawkins will get there. The team would be absolute fools to write him off at this stage of his development. And they won't. Fans might, but the coaches won't. Thank heavens, fans don't run the team.
Cost controlled cheaply for 3 years.
If he grades out equally (does not have to be superior) he should be the starter.
My least favorite part of last year's camp. It felt like some kind passive-aggressive move directed at Adoree Jackson.
I understand he may have looked great but they should've slow rolled everything until he played actual games. Not to mention it's kind of jarring to present yourself as a contending team and plan to go into the season with two rookies starting at CB.

Once the bullets started flying Hawkins looked like you'd expect him to as a smaller school rookie. And like pretty much every other rookie, he got "welcome to the NFL kid" by the level of play once there's film and the grind as the season progressed.
I was surprised, actually, that Daboll brought up Flott. Not because I think Flott's bad - I like him. But Hawkin's athletic ability gives him a higher ceiling and there's little doubt he's in the mix to start.
Then again, not really surprised. Since Daboll's been here the depth chart till opening day has been seniority-based.

Correction. He was so impressive to Martindale, who is a jackass, and against Daniel Jones, who sucks.
Fans are fans, so you can’t fault them for being excited about a player. But the Giants coaches should have known better than to start him (and move Jackson to slot CB to make room for him).
Hawkins was rightly benched after game 3. He just wasn’t ready. I am hoping he takes a big step forward.
Tre Somebody.
Again, not just my opinion.
Perhaps you should re-read the thread I linked above with Sy's reviews.
Well played.

I've read it before. He played mostly against backup QBs with vanilla offenses. I still believe it was foolish to start him at outside CB and move Jackson to slot CB.

I understand that a player with a lack of confidence, may gain confidence if the coaches, late in the season, say that his future is bright.
That player then has the long off-season to take comfort in those words, even if the coaches have no clue if the player has a future, or not, in the NFL.
Do I understand how part of player development, the fragile emotional side, works?
