So this is making the rounds today. CJ Stroud was asked whose career he'd rather have, Aaron Rodgers or Eli Mannings...One more ring vs. Stats. Stroud said Eli's. link - ( New Window )
He's pretty much the greatest US athlete in the second half of the 20th century, or on a very short list. Plus he won 6 championships. Nobody is trading that career for anybody else's career
I think he just means he'd like accomplish things on his own,
He's right. Eli has more Lombardis than Aaron. And Manning is much more with it/sane than Rodgers, who is a complete nutjob.
Rodgers is not a nut job. That simply implies you do not agree with his line of thinking which means some could say the same about you for example. He is an over the top narcissist and believes the world wants to hear his opinions.
Rodgers and his Packer teams came up small in a bunch of
NFC championship games. Rodgers was an immensely talented QB, as good as there ever was over a long period. But the fact that he has one ring tells you how special Eli’s two really are.
RE: Would you rather be Robert Horry or Michael Jordan?
Rodgers isn't Jordan but you can do the same with would you rather be Horry or Malone, Barkley or Ewing or David Robinson who all have less championships but were better players.
Reality is you can only try and be a good/better player. The rest is upto external factors. Eli is more sane and a great team mate but Rodgers is a better football player.
Michael Jorday/Robert Horry is just too distant. But my immediate reaction is that I would rather have the career of Horry over any of those other guys even though they were all better players.
also went on to say that if Stafford had Rodgers supporting casts through his career that Stafford would have 3 or 4 rings. Stroud says Stafford is one of the QB's he watches the most and he got his "no-look" passes from Stafford.
I like the fact Stroud recognizes and puts the ultimate goal (championships) before individual accolades, but I don't see any reason for him to take shots at Rodgers. It's just unnecessary IMO. Eli wouldn't have done it.
Stroud, in podcast discussion, went further to say Tom Brady, who is apparently mentoring Stroud, was a great teammate and treated his teammates well and he (Stroud) isn't sure what kind of teammate Aaron Rodgers is.
Again, even if he's 100% right, I think it's an unforced error on his part to go after Rodgers who a: career isn't over and b: is a first ballot HOFer. and does have a ring.
Just seems unnecessary - especially after getting the Eli vs Rodgers question correct.
Never once acted smarter than he actually is? Check
Two time Super Bowl Champion? Check

Yeah. Sounds about right.
Let’s continue the comparison …
Family centric vs star centric
Southern genteel vs WC whack job
Peyton’s place vs darkroom retreat
Most importantly … played his career with 1 team (the NY Football Giants) and knew when it was time vs.hanging on too long and ending it with the Jests.
I'll give Rogers the accolades like MVP etc... However Eli did the following things that as a young QB, you should be looking at:
1 - Win multiple Super Bowls
2 - Play out your contracts fully without pay cuts
3 - Make a seamless transition into cushy media positions that pay well for little work
Eli literally maximized his career from a business standpoint. While Rogers has been paid well and had some endorsements, the "finishing 2 contracts" thing Eli did was rare and I don't see Rogers with his personal being the media presence Eli is. The ManningCast is huge, he continues to get commercials despite being retired for years and if I'm correct, Omaha Productions is even in the process of developing a Chad Powers TV show (I still don't know if this was just a joke).
Yeah, from a career standpoint you take that over 1 Super Bowl, your team pushing you out at the end and most people thinking you're a jerk.
an Eli fan, but some of you twist yourselves into pretzels to knock down someone else who is also successful like it's a zero sum game.
Aaron Rodgers was a finalist to host jeopardy and his national ad campaigns like State Farm and the discount double check had him at least at the same level as Eli in the $8-$10M per year in endorsements.
You disagree with his politics and personal beliefs like the mainstream media does so you make him into a super villain. it's actually almost sad to see the effect they have on the lemmings, sad, but predictable.

He’s obviously had a very successful career. I won’t dispute that.
Is how Eli continues to be used like some punchline. I watched three different shows discussing it and the hosts and players use it as a forum to bash Eli. They even bring him up when he's not the topic. I really think he lives rent free in a lot of people's heads.

from a fan perspective, give me Eli's career. As a fan of a team, I personally don't care about my quarterback winning MVP's, I care about seeing my team win championships. Eli Manning is nice, he did it twice! And the way he did it, especially in 07, was the single greatest moment I have ever experienced as a sports fan, and I don't think anything will ever top it.
So, is Rodgers a better player? Yes, he is a better quarterback than Eli Manning, I don't think there are too many who would doubt that. But whose career would I rather have? Certain as a fan, it's not even close, Eli all day, every day.
Isnt wanting to win over personal accomplishments what everyone wants out of an athlete and a QB?
And you can still say this while acknowledging that Aaron Rodgers is and was the better player than Eli Manning
What I think underlines this little controversy is that the media has a particular bias against Eli that drives them nuts. There is a belittlement over his Super Bowl wins and career and somehow his Hall of Fame candidacy is expected to be “contentious “ or controversial despite the fact that every other 2-time Super Bowl MVP and top 10 all-time passing yards and passing TD QB is in the Hall of Fame.
Is still a portion of fans and media who try to chime and shout about the Giants defense and running games being the keys to the Giants winning those two championships.
Time after time. Facts and analytics in their face and it goes way above their heads.
Can't wait until he's officially induced into the Hall of Fame.

Exactly. As if the Giants were only tean to ever have a defense and running game
Eli had an all-time record 1219 pass yds. 9 tds to 1 int and 65% completion yet it was his 27th ranked defense that won him the SB. Sure.
The rings thing sometimes gets overrated. Where does 0 ring Marino stand against Eli? Montana himself said Marino was the best ever, himself a 4 time champ.
How about Eli versus his brother? Let's face it, he earned his 2 rings more than Peyton did his second ring (and the 2006 Chicago Bears were not the same level of opponent as any of those Patriots' teams).
The word "career" is interesting because it implies overall success, but should not be synonymous with talent. Brady had the best "career" of any NFL QB (perhaps any NFL player), but it could easily be argued there were more dominant QBs (even among his vein, like Montana).
Eli finishes barely over .500 for his career, and wouldn't normally be on anyone's elite QB radar, but then you sprinkle in ~10 postseason games and the narrative totally changes. It's wild how much weight those ten games have.
Rodgers himself is also fascinating. Unbelievable stats (particularly TD/INT ratio.....took him 20 years to throw 100+ interceptions), crazy arm talent, 4 time MVP (only Peyton & Brady had more), but couldn't get to the Super Bowl more than once. Giants, Cardinals, 49ers a few times, Brady Bucs...all had great defenses.
How much of that is on Rodgers? Is it more than Eli not being able to make the Giants' more competitive in general? Less?
Andrew Luck was 53-33 on largely unheralded Colts' teams. No real postseason success.
If Rodgers could win a super bowl with the Jets, that would be so damn impressive....the AFC is stacked with QBs. It would almost universally overturn this argument..........but should one season really do that?
On the Eli side....he did play for the winning team and made some key plays in those two super bowl victories against legendary Patriots teams. Hard to overlook it. In the postseason clutch category he's in the top 5 of all time.

It's complicated.
I don't think it's that complicated.
Would you rather have two rings and an otherwise good-not-great career? Or would you rather have a great career overall but only one ring?
You are playing against teams that are the best, that are playing their best at the highest level
Everyone is on their A games in the playoffs
So yeah it matters most
Eli Manning having 330 yds and 2 TDs vs the #1 ranked 49ers defense on the road in the rain and a defense that had put up some historic numbers in the NFCC is more telling than someone having those stats in September vs a bad Panthers team in perfect weather and no pressure
a game-winning TD pass in the Super Bowl - and it’s only the third most famous throw of his career. Moments matter in sports and he’s had some incredible ones. I’d have a hard time passing up my involvement in the Tyree play alone.
And forgive me for this, but if I may weigh in on the Rodgers/media thing. He gets paid six figures to pontificate on whatever he likes during weekly spots on the most popular sports pod out there - he’s hardly being persecuted by the big bad media.
Eli is a probable HOF with 2 rings, Rodgers is a definite HOF with one ring.
Yeah, give me Eli's career. Once you're that good, that rich, etc., rings matter more than MVPs. Stuff like Flacco vs. Marino is a more interesting debate. Not that anyone asked me.

it was a better job than your attempt at English (no clue what that word salad is supposed to mean and I'm pretty sure I don't care). Go back to watching MSNBC and reading Mother Jones, when you're done, take some time to think our what you want to say. Pick the right words...
problem is that’s a crime these days. And apparently, it makes you automatically an asshole.
Other than not thinking the way people want him to, he’s charitable, educated, and most if not all of his arguments that are controversial seem well thought and not plucked from thin air. I happen to like him, but understand why he can be off putting. The vitriol is what I don’t get.
Ohh and he’s an awesome QB. I’m taking the titles but he’s the better QB, can’t go wrong with either though.
I'm not burning Rodgers' jerseys/his opinions aren't keeping me up @ night. Honestly, I don't really give much thought other than, 'One of the better QBs I've ever seen. I'd love him as my QB tomorrow. But somebody I'd never be friends with.'
I get winning Super Bowls are hard, but it is kinda amazing that between him & Favre, the Packers have the same amount of Lombardis we have since Brett took over in '92. It does look like GB hit the jackpot again with Love. Bastards.

I am just amazed at how someone would think that Eli is a better QB or had a better career than Rodgers. Why? Because he has one more ring?
With that logic, you can also say that Amani Toomer had a better career than Larry Fitzgerald.
Eli has two rings because he played well in the playoffs and Superbowls, but also because the whole team played well. We had the defense, the offensive line, the running game, and yes the kicker. This is not to minimize the accomplishments but holy shit it is a team game.
Rodgers is the better QB by a mile and is a first ballot HOF candidate. We are still talking about whether Eli will get in (and I believe he should).
Stroud cam off more than a bit arrogant. One good rookie year and he's going to talk and dog Rodgers. Not a good look IMO
I suppose it is okay if he can back it up throughout his career.
True story here..
During Jim Brown's career, he was in San Francisco to play the 49ers.
At some point, he stopped in at a local shop and ordered a milk shake. A couple of young teenagers were looking at him knowing who he was. One of those teens walked up to him and said "I am going to break all of your records one day". Jim Brown just smiled and had some friendly reply.

Ask Larry Fitzgerald if he would trade his career and personal accomplishments for Amani Toomer and his career and superbowl win.
Dan Marino has talked about not winning a superbowl being his biggest regret and he would trade his personal accomplishments for just one superbowl.
We aren't talking about who is better, we are talking about career accomplishments and most players would rather have a superbowl ring, because that is the ultimate prize as a competitor over personal accomplishments.
No past comparison is going to be completely on point
The WCO is more QB friendly. Eli entered the 2012 season at 31 years old and a two time SB MVP.
With a quality front office he had 5-6 high quality years ahead with another opportunity to make a run with a quality team. Instead he had a lot of subpar talent around him.
GB has been one of the model franchises when it comes to the draft for over 30 years. Different QB's and skill sets. If both had good teams around them with a winner take all I'll take Eli.
Stroud cam off more than a bit arrogant. One good rookie year and he's going to talk and dog Rodgers. Not a good look IMO

Eli won 2 SBs, Rogers has won one. Rogers received more personal achievement and his teams were more consistently good with him. But I think almost any QB would say publicly what Stroud did. They'd take a ton of heat for being a "me first" player valuing personal achievement over the ultimate in team objectives, SB wins, if they didn't. And he probably does feel that way as I think most sincerely would. But if he didn't, then Stroud was probably smart not to admit it.

Sure.
Both sides make sense to an extent.

Stroud picked the former. Very uncomplicated.
Matthew Stafford is 11th in both and needs less than 1,000 yards and 10 TDs to pass Eli in both.
Unless Stafford gets hurt, he probably passes Eli in both before October 1.
And forgive me for this, but if I may weigh in on the Rodgers/media thing. He gets paid six figures to pontificate on whatever he likes during weekly spots on the most popular sports pod out there - he’s hardly being persecuted by the big bad media.
Yeah, give me Eli's career. Once you're that good, that rich, etc., rings matter more than MVPs. Stuff like Flacco vs. Marino is a more interesting debate. Not that anyone asked me.
Such utter bullshit.
But hey, good job on that sad attempt at some kind and d psychological analysis l.

it was a better job than your attempt at English (no clue what that word salad is supposed to mean and I'm pretty sure I don't care). Go back to watching MSNBC and reading Mother Jones, when you're done, take some time to think our what you want to say. Pick the right words...
He's a weird & really out there guy IMO. That's just my opinion on hearing/reading stuff he believes/reportedly believes.
I get winning Super Bowls are hard, but it is kinda amazing that between him & Favre, the Packers have the same amount of Lombardis we have since Brett took over in '92. It does look like GB hit the jackpot again with Love. Bastards.

If there's one thing I've always known, it's that you definitely have it all figured out.
Let me ask you, do you use Reynold's or store brand for you hats?

I wouldn't be so enamored with Love just yet.
That interception to cement the loss in the playoffs was very bad.

Was that Jim Brown he said that to or Ted Bundy?
