Build the Right Way

mittenedman : 6/8/2024 8:25 pm
Something Schoen's been preaching since he was hired is building things the right way. A sustainable winner. Through the draft, with homegrown players the fans can get behind. It takes longer than going for quick strikes in free agency. Buying a ring.

He's also preached positional value in the draft. These are his premium picks in the 1st 2 rounds since he's been here, and his big ticket free agent contracts:

QB - Daniel Jones (27, 2027)
WR1 - Malik Nabers (21, 2028)
WR2 - Jalin Hyatt (23, 2027)
slot - Wan'dale Robinson (23, 2026)
LT - Andrew Thomas (25, 2030)
C - John Michael Schmitz (25, 2027)
RT - Evan Neal (24, 2026)
DE - Brian Burns (26, 2029)
DE - Kayvon Thibodeaux (24, 2026)
DT - Dexter Lawrence (27, 2028)
3-down MLB - Bobby Okereke (28, 2027)
CB1 - Tae Banks (23, 2027)
S - Tyler Nubin (23, 2028)

This is the core of the football team. Pretty much the definition of built through the draft. That is more impact players than they've had in the past, enough to steer the team to wins. Following how this group of 13 develops is the story of the season. If these guys are clicking, they actually have some decent role players around them if not asked to do too much.
I've been critical of Schoen, but he's planted his best seeds in the right places, and people could be sleeping on this team, especially with Daboll taking over playcalling.

Your crusade against other BBIers who've been banned and returned under new handles is one of the best subplots cooking on BBI these days. I commend you sir.

I didnt call out any BBIers in that post. Just looking to upgrade the team. Lot of good athletes have come from the manhattan area.

On the presumed 53 man roster for Dallas they probably will have 8 players that have played for another organization.

QB Rush, 1 year with NYG
QB Lance, SF
RB Elliott, 1 year with NE
WR Cooks, various
LB Kendricks, Minnesota mainly
S Hooker, Indy
P Anger, LAR
LS Sieg, LV

This is probably not a fair comparison because Dallas probably has the most home grown talent of any roster in the NFL.
Looks like you aren't following the league

to well Googs. The two teams who played in the NFCCG last season have 1st round RB's. Teams all over the league have made huge investments in the positions you listed. Many of them are consistent playoff teams and SB winners.

Way to be on top of things with the basics.

My favorite Giants roster of all time -- the 2011 championship team. Highlighted in yellow are Giants draft picks in rounds one and two.

Great pass rush, great secondary, great pass game.

From a roster construction perspective, I see a little bit of resource allocation similarity.

The one thing Reese was a master at as a scout and initially as GM was not finding just contributors but really really good players late in the draft. A guy like Gibril Wilson while not a star - helped a lot. Bradshaw, Diehl, Jacobs, Jacquin Williams were all big parts of both SBs.

And of course he hit some major home runs in UDFA and free agency.

While the process is sound, the results are elusive.

I'm not sure the Giants have enough talent to have 5 NFL starters. CB2 and RB2 are huge questions. QB is mediocre at best.

On top of that some of those really young draftees from year 1 and year 2 need to develop - fast.

There’s applied logic and you can see what he’s trying to do. I give him credit for that.

But the results havent been there, so what are you giving him credit for? I like Schoen but if we aren’t finishing at 9+ wins than this was a failure.

I also think the staff did a great job developing players at all levels. Towards the end of that era, the number of diamonds in the rough dwindled down.

I agree 100% and have been beating that drum for a while. I understand people are bearish on this team due to the last 12 years, but I have high expectations for this roster. If they stay healthy and don't win games, we've got the wrong guy picking the players or coaching the players.
I direct that at Jones specifically too.

Jones was not drafted by this regime.

Gee, thanks for announcing you won't read the rest of the post. Cool.
He was drafted by the Giants and then re-signed to a second contract though. That's why I put the part about big ticket free agents being at premium positions, with guys just entering their prime.

Either get verification from the one person who can verify or STFU

You wouldn't even know who Producer is if you weren't here prior to this handle.

I don't need to ask anyone to sort that out. It's obvious on its face. You could just admit what your prior handle(s) were, but you - like the rest of the dupe brigade - lack the character to do so.

One person can provide the answer and you choose not to find out

I explained how I knew and now….along with stalking me you now choose to personally insult me by saying I have a lack of character

Great job internet muscles….this is a message board and it’s sad that you choose to demean someone’s character

I’ll ignore your posts moving forward and I suggest you ignore mine

Internet muscles?

It's not like I'm threatening you. I'm just pointing out that you're a dupe, because you are.

I don't care if you ignore my posts. I already find you completely useless anyway.
It'd be really cool

as usual I'm way late to the actual discussion, but it is something I have thought a lot about. First, there probably is no one way to build a team because no matter how its built you have to have good players. at the same time I really think the old 'build thru the draft' mantra, even though so many managers and coaches still swear by it, is kind of last century. Just think of the numbers. Just about every team turns it roster over about every 5 years and in any 5 year period a team will get @ 40 picks, but given the overall odds of success of draft picks - less than 50% when all rounds are figured - no team unless they get really likely can expect to get more than 15-20 players out of their drafts in any 5 year period. As a result, what I believe you almost have to do is find your key core impact players at impact positions with your high picks and then fill in the blanks as best as you can with later round picks and free agents. And given that it is a passing league those impact positions are QB, pass rushers, CBs, WRs and OTs (and especially LTs). Again I don't think one necessarily wants to be doctrinaire about it and pass on really good players early on at other positions, but if you are going to take players at other positions you really want them to be really good players and not just to fill a hole.

As an aside, while I was personally hoping that the Giants would take Nabers at #6 I am still more than a little surprised that they didn't take a QB there. My sense is that it may very well have come down to what Daboll wanted and/or pushed for in that he could have his own QB or stick with Jones while building up the weapons package available to the QB and he opted for the latter. We shall see.
