@RapSheet
Sources: #Giants TE Darren Waller has informed the team he plans to retire, walking away at the age of 31 after just one season with NYG.

Waller hasn’t attended workouts, and the team had known for some time he may not play. Now, he’s officially let them know before minicamp.
Whelp, it was fun while it lasted.

Not really, but good luck anyway with the music and everything.
As expected
ZogZerg : 6/9/2024 3:43 pm : link
This frees up some needed cap space.
You had to think this was forth coming.
SCGiantsFan : 6/9/2024 3:43 pm : link
Now we know and can fully move on and the team to keep working it's plan.

Good luck to him and his future going forward.
Happy trails.

Looking forward to seeing what Bellinger and the rook can do.
Please sign a decent corner with that space.
bceagle05 : 6/9/2024 3:46 pm : link
Flott and a rookie from Kentucky might get a little rough.
Man.
Johnny5 : 6/9/2024 3:47 pm : link
We really have sucked at the whole Free agency thing for a while now... lol
Good for him
gersh : 6/9/2024 3:47 pm : link
IMO, good for the Giants
Once his chronically injured hamstrings were a problem again - he was done, physically and mentally.
This adds $11.6M in cap space I believe
Blue Dog : 6/9/2024 3:48 pm : link
but also $4.9M in dead money for 2025 so I'm sure they'll try to roll some over.

To be fair, he was a trade acquisition, not a free agent signing

He was dominant in training camp, then 48 hours before the season started his hamstring was bothering him. Tried to play through it and that was a disaster.
Well.

Wow, Forced into retirement because of divorce
Rich_Houston_1971 : 6/9/2024 3:57 pm : link
Just wow if thats the case.
Hindsight is 20/20 of course
moespree : 6/9/2024 3:58 pm : link
But man. Horrendous trade. A 3rd round pick for him.
Glad to have it over with

Let's see if Bells or Theo becomes TE1 to start the season. Gotta think Theo takes over at some point.
He should
crooza172 : 6/9/2024 4:00 pm : link
Immediately retire from music next.

He wasn't forced into anything. He choose to retire...
As I said to Manny on another thread,
Bill in UT : 6/9/2024 4:04 pm : link
I wonder if they're going to look at Chatman as a blocking TE or fullback on short yardage packages. I know the other 2 TEs are primarily blockers, but he's intriguing.

What a waste.

SFGFNCGiantsFan : 6/9/2024 4:15 pm : link
After watching that rap video, I really think he is going through shit. And considering his substance abuse history, I hope he doesn’t relapse. I wish him well.
I like the TE room
Dave on the UWS : 6/9/2024 4:15 pm : link
as it stands now. Bellinger should be more like the promising rookie he was as TE1. Theo has high upside and the 2 blockers round out the room nicely.

He still contributed more than Toney did.

JS should have known he was going to retire. What a terrible GM (sarcasm).
Hard to say
Breeze_94 : 6/9/2024 4:23 pm : link
Giants are not a better team with a healthy Waller. That said, I like Bellinger and Theo Johnson has the tools to be the best TE we’ve had since Martellus Bennett. I think they’ll be fine, and this allows the young pass catchers more opportunities.
So sad. Instant Giants legend.

Damn. You bring up Bennett, I really liked him I wish he could've stuck around. $.
Finally

the drama is finally over.

I still don't blame Schoen for making the trade. It seemed like a good idea given that we had an extra third round pick, and needed some type of additional receiving help. But it was obviously a disaster.
Good

I hate to nitpick, but I have to here, Haha. Ford said that right after being sworn in. That picture is from a month later when he issued the pardon.
Sorry but what a waste
Larry in Pencilvania : 6/9/2024 4:57 pm : link
A first round pick turned into a third thrown away on this joke who barely played and did little when he did. Should never have traded that pick.

Ridiculous
Happy Retirement

Now they need to move on....

Hell to the no. He totally mailed it in last year and was making business decisions on the field to the detriment of his teammates. We do need a vet CB opposite Banks but definitely don’t need that kind of attitude around here.
Whenever the Giants
mittenedman : 6/9/2024 5:32 pm : link
pick up a big name player late in their career, they always seem to flop.
Mr August
gridirony : 6/9/2024 5:33 pm : link

The big exception
mittenedman : 6/9/2024 5:33 pm : link
of course is Deon Grant. What a great signing that was, by Reese. Even after he had Rolle & Phillips.

Block and was really not effective as a receiver last year. Made the offense predictable and him being unreliable hurt.
hate to say it

But Mike Lombardi was right when he said the Giants overpaid and would regret the trade right as it happened
I don’t hold the against Schoen as I probably take the sane

I don’t hold this against Schoen as I probably take the same risk.
ThomasG : 6/9/2024 6:33 pm : link
Although I probably bid up Hockinson when he came available. Walller was clearly a flash without substance.

Hopefully our rookie TE shows something.
