I approve. Hurley has my blessing.

I wouldn't begrudge him going to the NBA but not the Lakers. Glad he's staying at UConn
Don't blame him
Costy16 : 6/10/2024 2:01 pm : link
The Lakers are a circus, and living in Los Angeles sounds terrible.

JR Smith tweeted out to him "don't fall for it" over the weekend.
Sweet!

When he exists in the 1st weekend of the NCAA's next spring, he'll have second thoughts.

1. Why wouldn’t he take the call and meeting and explore the option, turning that into a raise? Is that now a crime?

2. Top programs lose in the first round, it happens, check your history books. So it’s bound to happen to Hurley, I think he knows that.

3. He’s an east coaster, I think he stays at UConn until a different (Knicks) job opens up. Nothing wrong with that either.

Good day for UConn. Your post stinks.

Probably thought they were getting bounced on the first round this year too. I remember someone posted that, just don't remember if it was the Sky King

No he won't. CT is a very nice place with the coin he is making. He's close to family and he doesn't need to put up with the egos in the NBA. He can stay at UCONN forever if he wants to. He doesn't have to worry about some ego whining to the GM or the press behind his back.
Would not have blamed him if he took that job and that money.
Heisenberg : 6/10/2024 2:47 pm : link
I am ecstatic that he didn't take it. They did so well this offseason rebuilding the team after all the guys who left and Karaban coming back, it was gonna be really hard to not see them give another repeat a shot. He'll get a really nice and deserved raise from UConn and he will get another shot at the NBA later.

Great day for Husky fans and terrible day for Husky haters.

6 for only 70M?? Low-ball bullshit offer from Lakers. No wonder he turned that down. That's Monty Williams money. He ain't leaving for Monty Williams money, considering the situation he's currently in.

And this won’t be the last NBA call he gets, even if UConn has an early tourney exit or two

That offer sounds like the Lakers weren’t remotely serious. Woj said it would’ve been “top 6” coaching money. Top six???!? That was the best they could do?

Living in Los Angeles can be fantastic, especially if you have money. Live in Malibu, or in the hills near Calabasas, or near the beach... commute by helicopter... just be very, very, VERY careful about that last part.

Los Angeles is becoming less livable due to climate change (fires, excessive heat), that's why my wife and I left, but SoCal is still great if you don't have to worry about the high cost of housing, or the massive homelessness problem plaguing the "grid" below the hills.

A truly serious offer worthy of him actually leaving UConn
shockeyisthebest8056 : 6/10/2024 3:26 pm : link
had to be one that at worst settled in just beneath the three active multi championship coaches… Pop, Kerr, and Spoelstra.

The Clippers just paid Ty Lue that amount. Lakers embarrassed themselves here.
Not only is that a too offer
redwhiteandbigblue : 6/10/2024 3:28 pm : link
But if you think next years team will be an early exit team in the tourney you are nuts. I say minimum sweet 16 and most likely much better.

Offer
one thing about the Lakers
Osi Osi Osi OyOyOy : 6/10/2024 3:31 pm : link
is that their team ownership is relatively not that wealthy compared to the newer ownership groups (nepo Owners). They've made several money-conscious moves over the years (letting Caruso go being by far the biggest blunder) that indicates their relative cheapness.

Hurley should be a hot commodity leaguewide for the next couple years barring something crazy.
The freaking Pistons are paying their coach more than that!
shockeyisthebest8056 : 6/10/2024 3:40 pm : link
The Lakers either were unserious or incompetent
Tom Thibideau can’t coach forever

Detroit, Cleveland actually have the richest owners after Balmer.

Just a Lakers fan's sour grapes. Enjoy JJ Redick.

I wouldn't have faulted him had he left, but for sure he'd be back in the college ranks after 5 years.
This seems like too low of an offer from the LAL
aimrocky : 6/10/2024 4:58 pm : link
Especially if the rumor that Kentucky offered Hurley $11 mil a year are true, this offer barely eclipsed that.

I have a friend who's close to program through a player and he said Knicks are his top NBA job, with Brooklyn and Philly right behind them. He didn't think Hurley would jump at any other NBA job. Living in the Northeast appears to be extremely important to their family.

That makes sense, plus, I don't think LAL is that great of a spot right now. An aging LeBron, an aging and always hurt AD, and little else with no cap space. How are they going to improve.

The Knicks would be a great spot, but I don't see them kicking Thibs to the curb. At least with Brooklyn, he'd have a blank canvas.
I wonder if he would of gone
nygiants16 : 6/10/2024 5:28 pm : link
if the Money was hire and they basically told him he could rebuild and build it his way, my guess the Lakers still wanted to add stars and build that way and Hurley wanted to build a culture the way he wanted

I can see this too. The entire NBA and world needs to “quit LeBron”. Just ignore him and hopefully he fades away into obscurity.
nah
Osi Osi Osi OyOyOy : 6/10/2024 6:05 pm : link
I'll enjoy watching LeBron kick ass until he stops, hopefully 5 years from. Amazing athlete and American sports figure.

Most likely it was LA's ownership just being cheap in general.
5 more years? Yuck

SFGFNCGiantsFan : 6/10/2024 6:17 pm : link
Coaching LBJ at the end of his career is something any coach should consider as a negative taking that job. Guys wired like LBJ are usually the last to know that they’re not ‘the man’ anymore.
The Lakers really should blow it up
nygiants16 : 6/10/2024 6:28 pm : link
Let Lebron walk or have him opt in and trade him and get a bunch of picks, trade AD and get a bunch of picks..

Keeping them on your team is essentially wasting 2 or 3 years..You got no shot in the west and continually adding a 3rd star is not going to work anymore with the new rules

He’s been defying the odds age wise so far, nothing would surprise me.
Somebody said he wouldn’t want to deal with NBA egos.

That’s funny. Nobody, outside of maybe LeBron has a bigger ego than Danny. Cant imagine the battle of those two egos going well.

For me, it's either Jordan or LBJ as the best I've ever seen. I can't include Kareem because he hung it up after the '88-'89 season & Russell, etc. predate me.

But LBJ can't retire soon enough. I'm so sick of him.

It’s just sad pathetic hater thoughts to me. You can appreciate what you don’t like. What he’s done and still doing is nothing short of historic.

I’m just a fan of greatness. Doesn’t get much greater than him.

It’s so funny how LeBron fan boys think everyone on the planet has to love everything about LeBron, never criticize him and just constantly heap praise his way and if you don’t, it’s just “sad pathetic hater thoughts”. His fan boys are as thin skinned as he is

So if one doesn't like LBJ, one is a 'sad pathetic hater'? Huh?

I can not like something without hating it
UConn4523 : 6/10/2024 7:26 pm : link
Insert LeBron. All time great, don’t care for him. Don’t like the league he’s had a major role in creating and I’m excited for his exit, hopeful for a culture shift. I thought the NBA was great before and even during early LeBron years (including the years he whooped my Bulls asses), but it cratered. I care more about the game than a single player.

You guys have seen me on many different sports threads. Whether it be whatever legend like Brady, Djokovic, Messi, Trout, Judge, etc… I’ll appreciate the hell out of them.

LeBron is near the top of that. And it’s just funny to me how people talk about him vs. athletes who did actual terrible shit.

He went from homeless to billionaire. Most points ever. Top 5 assists ever. No off-court scandals. Married to his HS girl. Survived teenage idolizing by the media which so many of our athletes/musicians failed. 4 Rings and Finals MVPs (2nd most Finals MVPs to MJ).

I’m not some LeBron fanboy. I have MJ as my GOAT. But is just disgusts me how dumb so many people are. To root for this guy to retire is among the dumbest shit I’ve ever heard. Let’s see how far this once in a generation freak can push it.
I would be good coin
JT039 : 6/10/2024 7:30 pm : link
Hurley would have been more attracted to the Lakers if lebron wasn’t there. Even if it meant a total rebuild.

LeBron is an all time great but he is absolutely a coach killer.

You're a good poster, but I'm sick of LeBron & his entire act. I'm sick of the passive aggressive shit he pulls, how he tries to steer all NBA convo back to him, & how he acts as a defacto GM each season. It's annoying AF.

& I'm even sick of Bronny. & I feel bad saying that considering he's a kid/his medical scare, but I can't take him being shoved into our face because he's LBJ's son & LeBron wants to play with him someday.
