He didn’t talk about his tenure with the Giants, so you know it’s a sore subject for him. He did bring up his time with Mike Lombardi at the the Raiders and his time as a grad assistant at Notre Dame with Lou Holtz. He also spoke about game planning against Mahomes and it was cool hearing a DC talk about that assignment.
One thing I did find interesting was that he stated Isaiah Simmons was his highest graded defensive player EVER coming out of college. So this explains why the Giants wanted him last year. Good conversation and worth a listen.
With the addition of Burns, and with Thibs, Dex, Ojurlari and Okereke - the pass rush can be special. Outside of WR (Nabers) - that's the most exciting aspect of the team to me going into this season.

Hyatt, year 2? Put on some bulk...faster than Tyreek Hill...any excitement there?
With Burns should easily be top 5?

No doubt he's a superior athlete

I was thinking that after I posted that one.
Short answer, yes
Longer answer, after years of being disappointed by players, I try to manage my expectations.

With great coaching he has the tools to become unstoppable. As Carl notes, he has the two things you can't teach - natural instincts & speed.
Look at this tape, at the 3:00 mark, last linebacker I've seen catch a running back (from that far away) from behind (as he accelerates into an open hole) was LT; Banks knows what he's talking about.

Thank you. I will give it a listen.

Think I'll go outside and enjoy some sunshine.
You mean if anyone could find a productive role for him. But, that seems a very tall task.

Really? He wasn't productive last season?
He was 8th/9th on the team in solo/total tackles in limited snaps. So yeah he was. And at his price that's fine. But given his freak athletics we expect more. Maybe we'll get it.
I know that seems like his best position, but IIRC there’s a video that breaks down how Simmons has been most successful. And further testing my memory I thought blitzing from inside was effective for him.
Regardless, he’s another useful chess piece.
In Burns and Thibs we have a pair of legit ERs
Ojulari, when healthy, make is 3 good ERs (and hopefully he can spell Burns and Thibs)
McFadden seems to be a fine complement to Okereke
With Dex wreaking havoc in the middle - there’s a lot to be optimistic about.
I wouldn’t say any other player is a legit plus player but many can get to the QB. Simmons, Pinnock on blitzes
And newly signed DT Philips is best as a pass rusher
Riley Jordan seems to have some pass rush ability….?
First of all, it’s Jordan Riley
Secondly, he had a total of 0 sacks last year.
So….I guess I saw flashes of quickness for a big man that made me optimistic.

That's the thing - maybe we expect to much?
Arizona made him the 8th pick in the 2020 draft ... and he is now with the Giants. Something isn't right - he certainly is not "Unstoppable". If he was he would still be in the desert.
in his career he has created a lot of turnovers and splash plays but hasn't found a home in any defense. who knows maybe that happens with bowen, he got a lot more out of al shaair than i expected and i liked al shaair a lot in SF.
as a 3rd coverage/blitz lb i think simmons can be a real an impact piece. last year's defense just so rarely got teams in 3rd and long.

He might have meant Ryder Anderson. Jordan Riley has some food moments but pass rushing is not his strength.

I've seen even less of Ryder Anderson, but yes, he's built more like an interior pass rushing DT.
There has been a lot of talk here of the that type of player the Giants passed on in the draft. Hopefully, we have the right guys to generate a consistent pass rush.

This doesn't add up. If he had natural instincts to go along with his speed, he'd be a pro bowl player and it wouldn't require "great coaching" to get him there. Instead he was had for a future 7th round pick from the team that spent a top ten pick on him and tried like hell to make an every down player out of him, but couldn't. At this point he is what he is and you can't blame it on coaching because several coaches have tried. Banks is right that "you can't teach natural instincts" but if Simmons had those natural instincts he would've been a Pro Bowl player because there's no doubting his freakish athleticism.
From the film you can see the rare athletic ability (burst, speed and length)
The "instincts" really just = a highlight where he did the right thing.
My guess is that he continues to rely on his natural ability and doesn't study like he should.

The front office and coaching staff have made it a point to bring in "smart" players so I doubt that they would have re-signed him if he wasn't putting in the work. I believe it's a case of him being a tweener jack-of-all trades type who never developed the instincts to become a dominate player at any role. So the Giants have responded by giving him a limited role as the passing down hybrid linebacker/safety. This might work out a bit better for him because Simmons isn't a good man to man defender in pass coverage so a more zone based scheme couldn't hurt.
Simmons is not a "sticky" type pass defender, but one who can focus on the QB and "jump" passes that come in his direction, in many ways, the Bowen defense is better suited than the Martindale defense was to him.
