Giants’ Wan’Dale Robinson had a good practice today catching passes from Drew Lock, including an early slant for a catch and run TD on Cor’Dale Flott

Three Giants WRs sustained some sort of injury and left practice, though: Darius Slayton, Bryce Ford-Wheaton and Chase Cota

Cota was carted off. The other two walked off. Slayton after he slipped on a route

Evan Neal was not with the team. He did a workout inside before walking out to some of practice. Tre Hawkins wasn’t on the field, and a handful of players were on the side, including Micah McFadden and Isaiah Simmons #Giants

yes, it's standard procedure, but it raises concerns about his ability to play at a high level or even just without pain by the start of the season. If he's not ready to go, they have serious adjustments to make. They don't have a decent backup T on the team and sticking EO out there screws up the G situation again. With a healthy, improved Neal, this team only has 5 good lineman. Without him we're back to the same old-same old.

At Giants minicamp, Wan’Dale Robinson had strong day. Took a slant to the house.

Team only did 11 on 11 drills. No 7 on 7.
So Daniel Jones spent most of practice working on side field. Coach Brian Daboll said expectation is everyone will be ready for training camp. Includes DJ.

He will move there if Neal fails at RT. I don't think the plan was necessarily to slide guys due to injury. And Ezeudu may not even be the swing tackle as Nelson has been out too.

@TheAthleticNFL
later, but here are a few quick observations from practice:

• Daboll again was calling plays. Team periods were more game-like today with players/coaches on the sideline and plays getting called via headsets. Offense worked at a fast tempo today.

• Wan'Dale Robinson had five catches in team drills, including the catch-and-run TD on the slant. Lot of underneath passing from Drew Lock, including a nice side-arm delivery, so not surprising that Robinson was the main target.

• CB Dru Phillips, who has been the second-team nickel all spring, had an interception on a Tommy DeVito pass that was dropped/batted by WR Dennis Houston.

• TE Daniel Bellinger said he has been held out of team drills so Theo Johnson and Lawrence Cager can get more reps, not due to an injury. Bellinger missed one practice open to the media this spring and I don't have him down for any targets in team periods in any of the other three open practices. Seems odds to limit his reps so drastically if there's no health issue.

• I don't believe OLB Azeez Ojulari took any team reps today. Likely managing the workload of a player with a lengthy injury history.

• OL Matt Nelson got team reps for the first time in an open practice this spring. Nelson, who is coming back from ankle surgery, worked as the third-team LT.

• Undrafted rookie Jake Kubas has been working as a second-team guard in the last two open practices. Meanwhile, Jimmy Morrissey has been the second-team center for the past three open practices with Austin Schlottmann working with the third-team offense.

• Veteran CB tryout Tre Herndon has had a fairly even split outside and in the slot in his six-year career. He worked as the third-team slot CB today. He would have had a sack on a slot blitz in a team period.

Schmeelk's Report
Eric from BBI : Admin : 6/11/2024 4:28 pm : link
Quote:

* Daboll informed the media before practice that they would not be doing any 7-on-7 today, which meant Daniel Jones would not get any competitive reps since his knee injury recovery still has him sitting out 11-on-11 team drills. Jones said he should be ready to go on the first day of training camp.

* I watched the offense during individual drills today, starting with the quarterbacks and the skill position players. Jones got the most of his reps during this portion of practice, making sure to get reps throwing to the first-team wideouts. Jones said during his news conference that throwing against air can help that process along.

* Offensive line coach Carmen Bricillo continues to try to build chemistry with the group, working on a lot of combo blocks. He had the guards and centers working together with assistant offensive line coach James Ferentz while he worked with the offensive tackles and tight ends. They worked on moving in sync on zone runs with both players going in the same direction, as well as combo blocking a defensive lineman before getting to the second level to get to a linebacker. The tackles and tight ends also worked on pass protection, with the tight end chipping the defensive end to block in tandem with the offensive tackle.

* The competitive part of practice began with no-huddle work for the offense. After completing a pass to Malik Nabers to start the session and a scramble after strong coverage left no one open, Drew Lock hit Wan'Dale Robinson in rhythm over the middle. Robinson pulled away and ran for what would have been a 50-yard touchdown catch.

* Tommy DeVitto hit Bryce Ford-Wheaton on a deep crosser that would have gone for a long gain, although Elijah Chatman got some penetration on the play for what could have been a sack. With the final group, Nathan Rourke had two passes knocked away by Kaleb Hayes. During the entire no-huddle period, the defense had at least three plays where they played coverage so well the quarterback either had to eat the ball and run it or throw it away.

* The defense held strong during team red-zone drills and prevented a touchdown. Cor'Dale Flott prevented a completion, and Boogie Basham got penetration into the backfield on another. Brian Burns also got himself into the backfield during this team period and disrupted a pass play.

* In the final set of team drills, Deonte Banks played great coverage on Jalin Hyatt, who ran deep down the right sideline. Elijah Riley also knocked a pass away. Dru Phillips had the defensive play of practice, catching a pass that deflected off the hands of wide receiver Dennis Houston before it hit the ground for an interception.

* The offense made two big plays in the final team session of practice. Jalin Hyatt burst up the sideline and could have run for a score. Theo Johnson caught a deep touchdown pass from Tommy DeVito to the left side of the field.

Dan Salomone's Report

Touchdowns

Wide receiver Wan'Dale Robinson had a productive day, beginning with a catch-and-run that could have been a touchdown in a live situation. The third-year pro turned on the afterburners to split the final level of the defense after catching a Drew Lock pass in stride.

Jalin Hyatt showed his trademark speed later in practice to beat the defense to the goal line. Lock also delivered that pass.

"I think he's made a ton of improvement this offseason and was really dialed in on some of the smaller details of route-running, understanding how defenders are trying to play him and how to gain leverage and gain separation," Jones said of Hyatt. "He's worked tremendously hard this offseason, and I think it's shown up on the field this spring. It's been really fun working with him. He's an extremely talented guy obviously, and he's only getting better."

The final score of the day came on a connection between Tommy DeVito and rookie tight end Theo Johnson. The defense might have something to say in the film room, however, as there could have been a sack on the play. Nonetheless, tight end has been a topic of conversation following Darren Waller's retirement announcement this week.

"I would say the first thing with Darren is my concern for him is more of a person than anything, Daboll said. "I'm glad he's doing well. Spoke to him yesterday. Communicated with him throughout the offseason. That's his decision. We were going to respect the decision and give him as much time as he needed. Wish him well. Here for him if he needs anything. That's what happens in the NFL sometimes."

On Johnson, Daboll said, "We just drafted Theo because we thought he was a good player. He has good measurables. Obviously you know what his testing was. He's smart. We thought he would be a good addition to our team."

Takeaways

Rookie cornerback Dru Phillips, a third-round pick from the University of Kentucky, got on the board with an interception on a tipped pass.
Notes & notable plays

Rookie wide receiver Malik Nabers recorded a handful of catches as the first phase of his young career is nearly complete. The sixth overall pick was asked after practice what kind of first impression he has made this spring. "I believe a good impression," he responded. "When I'm out there on the field, the level of competition rises at its highest – because my competition, I bring the dog, I bring the juice when I'm out there."

He certainly brought both the dog and the juice in last Thursday's practice. A couple of high-flying catches with the media in attendance reminded everyone how he has the ability to take over.

"You know, that's just me," Nabers said. "When I'm out there on the field, just everything I do is just me. I can't really say, 'I can bring it to the NFL.' I can only just play at my level of competition. That was one of those days I was playing at a high level. I'm just glad I got to showcase that with the team. That was really it."

Outside linebacker Brian Burns would have recorded a strip-sack in live action, serving up another appetizer to what could be coming when the season begins. Linebacker Bobby Okereke is certainly excited to have him. "Makes my job a lot easier," Okereke said. "Quarterback has to get the ball out quicker."

As the quarterback of the defense, Okereke shed light on how the new defense is coming together under Shane Bowen.

"It's fun," Okereke said. "I get to play a little bit more coverage. The way Shane calls it, we're going to be multiple. We'll be able to combat the offensive strengths, so we we'll have a good mix of everything. … It is early. I think we can be as good as we want to be. We have very talented pieces and we're just working every day to get better."

Okereke also spoke on the difference between the old and new schemes.

"Wink [Martindale] kind of wanted you to play hard and fast, just play physical, downhill, figure it out," Okereke said. "Here it's a process of elimination. If this guy goes vertical, you check two; if two does this, you check three. You kind of put it in buckets, and that's the process of decision-making I was talking about."

As for the defensive front, Okereke said it is "prolific."

"You've got Dexter Lawrence, Brian Burns, Kayvon Thibodeaux," Okereke said. "Dex is a Pro Bowler. Brian has been Pro Bowler. Kayvon is tracking towards that. Those guys can be as good as they want to be."

Staying on the defensive side of the ball, cornerback Deonte Banks showed once again he has the tools to be a No. 1 corner in his second season. The former first-round draft pick played perfect coverage to force an incompletion on a deep pass.

Frame-wise and body control, Nabers does remind me of Ja'Marr Chase. His aura and ease with which he can do crazy stuff to make you bat your eyes at any moment is absolutely OBJ-esque.

#NYGiants rookie Dru Phillips was right place, right time for an interception today when Tommy DeVito's pass bounced off Dennis Houston's hands.
Nice dive by Phillips to secure the pick. He's been working the nickel with first and second team defense.

First two punt returners up today:

Rookie Ayir Asante
Isaiah McKenzie

Kickoff return pairs
Devin Singletary/Turbo Miller
Tyrone Tracy/Ayir Asante
Turbo Miller/Wan'Dale Robinson
Singletary/Asante

Jordon Riley was active today, taking a few snaps in 11/11 off Dexter Lawrence's plate. He was out there paired with Ryder Anderson.

Graham Gano was 7-for-7 on field goals during one of the special teams periods today. Good to see Gano back healthy.

Tommy DeVito threw a great deep ball to Bryce Ford-Wheaton across the middle and over the top of several defenders, threading the needle. Can always tell your eyes are seeing the right thing by the reaction of teammates. This one got a reax.

Darnay Holmes got a few reps on the outside at boundary corner with the second team in 11/11 today.
Bellinger bares watching.

Regarding Okereke’s comments: That sounds like a “read and react” defense. I sure hope that does not apply to the d-line. Those guys need to be turned loose, especially if Bowen’s defense does not include a lot of blitzing.

Tyrone Tracy Jr. spent a good portion of 11/11 drills today with the 1s. The rookie is already making a push to be the #Giants100 back on passing downs. Pass pro this summer, as always, will be the final test.

This is great to hear. Now where is Nubin? We need an early starter out of the #47 pick.
