Japanese competitive eater Takeru Kobayashi, the six-time Nathan's Hot Dog Eating Contest champion, has announced his retirement from the sport due to rising health concerns.

"I’ve decided to retire from competitive eating. It’s all I've done for the last 20 years," Kobayashi, 46, announced in Netflix's "Hack Your Health - The Secrets of Your Gut," a documentary film that explores how food, the digestive system and gut health relates to overall well-being.

Kobayashi said decades of overeating for sport has left him with no appetite or no sensation of fullness, which his wife Maggie James said has caused Kobayashi to go days without eating anything at all.

Nathan's will not allow Joey Chestnut to compete in the 2024 Hot Dog eating contest after Chestnut signed a four-year, $1.2M deal with Impossible Foods, a vegan food company, per @nypost

Chestnut was paid $200K for his appearance in last year's contest

Plant-based meat substitutes have on average 50% lower environmental impact.

Ethical as well as environmental impacts are the big argument here. Fake meat has a much smaller carbon footprint than beef and uses way less water and land.
Ethical sure

can’t argue someone’s beliefs. But environmental is bullshit, so much info to debunk that argument.
In all seriousness

I'm wondering if Chestnut's endorsement deal depends on him participating in the hot-dog eating contest.

Would be funny if he signed the deal to get paid, knowing full well that he wouldn't be able to compete.

Totally agree, the environmental part is garbage. Similar to the EV push where the toxic impacts of the production and disposal of the ridiculously heavy batteries are completely ignored.

Would you rather eat a borderline lethal amount of hot dogs once a year for the rest of your undoubtedly shortened life for $200k an event, or eat vegan for 4 years for $1.2M and just know you did that?
Humans are omnivores
JohnF : 6/11/2024 3:39 pm : link
It's how we evolved. Our ancestors ate nuts, seeds, fruits, plants and scavenged carcasses of animals killed by other animals before we learned to use tools to kill animals for meat.

We're not really suited for only one type of diet. Our teeth have incisors, but aren't as suited for tearing/chewing raw meat (hence fire and silverware). Our stomachs aren't suited for much of the vegetation like the herbivores (think of how cow stomachs are suited for processing grass).

Our species has been successful because we can pretty much find something to eat in almost any environment. Efforts to go to an all meat or all vegan diet have often resulted in illnesses or poor development of children unless you pump people full of artificial subsitutes for the vitamins and other things needed.

You can see over time as diets became more varied because of technological advances resulting in more food choices and availability, Humans have grown in height and weight. Better and more varied food DO make a difference!

You also have to take into account fetal development issues as well. Our brain size has grown throughout time thanks to an increasing meat diet.

Taking all of that into account, we eat WAY too much meat. We should eat a varied diet, with meat more of a side dish or less. And it should be natural, not artificial meat pumped with hormones.

The best solution at this point is going long term on the Mediterranean diet...a way of eating that emphasizes fruits, vegetables, legumes, and whole grains. It includes fewer ultra-processed foods and less meat than a typical Western diet. Studies have shown that Women who use this diet live longer on average.

But...hot dogs are discouraged on the Mediterranean Diet, along with other processed foods!
Can anyone
Tim in Capital City : 6/11/2024 3:40 pm : link
show me an academic/peer reviewed paper in which they analyze the life cycle GHG emissions of plant based meat vs. beef and show that the environmental part is garbage? Or that it is debunked?

I’ve read a whole bunch of articles from journals and have never read anything worthwhile that claimed otherwise. Comparing EVs to plant based meats is a bit of a red herring as well.
Tim, I don’t have the time or the energy
UConn4523 : 6/11/2024 4:01 pm : link
but there’s a ton of research on it to Atleast cause an objective person to question what they are being told. Also, you are replacing 1 ingredient with dozens depending on what you are eating so there’s a “is this actually good for me” cost as well.

I have no desire to eat fake meat and won’t do it. Add on my skepticism with the environmental push and it’s a no brainer.

Here is a study done by Johns Hopkins researchers. If you squint hard you can make the case. You have to compare the best possible environmental practices for raising beef vs the worst practices for plant based substitutes.

Thanks for this one. Figure 3 showing the cradle to processing GHG footprint for 100g of protein does a pretty good job of telling the story. Once you start mixing in cell based (which is not yet viable commercially), you can get some overlap.

Uconn - no one is going to make you eat plant based meat or anything for that matter.

A carnivore diet has shown to be extremely beneficial in healing the body. Eliminating inflammation, reversal of type 2 diabetes, healing joint pain and discomfort. Jordan Peterson was on with Joe Rogan a few years ago and told him he switched his diet to beef, salt, water. Lost weight, chronic inflammation went away, skin issues cleared up...said he felt the best he's ever felt in his life. I follow Shawn Baker, Anthony Chaffee and Paul Saladino. Saladino is a little different than the other two as he advocates an "animal based" diet. So he includes things like raw honey, raw milk, raw cheese, kefir, organic fruits. But the basis of all of his meals are red meat.

UConn4523 : 6/12/2024 10:06 am : link
but we definitely eat too much bad meat (fast food). Good clean beef, chicken, etc isn’t something you can eat too much of as long as you are disciplined to stop eating when you are full. There’s obviously other factors like personal health issues (extremely high cholesterol) but I’m speaking in general.

The cholesterol debate has intensified over the last 5 years or so. The body needs cholesterol, it is produced by the liver. The crazy thing is that Lipitor has shown to cause memory loss in people who take it.
Agreed
UConn4523 : 6/12/2024 11:21 am : link
I have a congenital heart issue and my heart doc at Yale recently reviewed my bloodwork and basically said that my LDL, which is technically elevated based on what’s been known to be acceptable, is completely fine. The overwhelming consensus is no smoking, stay slim, and your odds of living a long healthy life increase dramatically.

I find it much much easier to stay fit with a high meat intake as satiety is way easier to fulfill and I’m getting all the protein benefits along with it. I still eat a lot of fruit and vegetables but increasing my intake of meat has made me feel much better. I also sleep better and have more energy.

Same. I find the whole thing kind of gross. And not to get on any high horses but knowing that so many people are going without food while these contests...I mean I have done it before (not this specifically) so I am no better. Some fool dared me to eat 10 mcdonalds cheeseburgers. He learned a lesson that day.

Just seems in bad taste, no pun intended. And the mixing of water to slurp down dogs/bread like that is so fucking nasty.

Saladino quit the carnivore diet after it made his testosterone drop and caused sleep disturbances, heart palpitations, and muscle cramps. Baker admits we don’t have the data that shows whether the carnivore diet will benefit health long-term. The benefits are all anecdotal. There are a lot of concerns.

He didn't tell me to lose about 12-15 lbs, but I did and voilà! My cholesterol and BP were no longer high!

I also have a friend who took statins for quite a few yrs and he's convinced it's why he developed cancer in his kidneys.
