I’m sure JJ will take over at some point, but I like the approach of bringing him along slowly. Not saying Darnold is anywhere near as good as Kurt Warner, but it worked out pretty well for us with Warner handing over the reigns to Eli halfway through Eli’s rookie year (albeit not by choice).
Honest question though, remove contract implications, etc. and just think about the skill set and potential. Would you rather have Darnold as our starter right now or Jones?

Tough choice.
Warner was a Super Bowl winning QB. Darnold is lucky to still be in the league. These two are not the same
The advantage of Darnold is that he is disposable. If he has a mediocre year, you just move on. If Daniel has a mediocre year, we could be 1, 2, 3 more years of committing to him at $40 M because of Maras love affair with Daniel.
Everyone knew McCarthy was going to have to sit for a while before starting. It would have been shocking if they announced McCarthy as a starter before camp.
Kurt Warner had a much better case to make than Sam Darnold for being perturbed by that. The fact that Darnold has a starting gig in the NFL - even for a short period - is something he should just be thankful for.
Hindsight it was the right call, but we were right in the playoff mix with Warner as a starting QB.

5-3 but he was holding the ball forever and it was costing the offense. The game in Arizona sticks out. It was time, he did look cooked.

They were 5-4 when Warner was benched but they were were coming off two straight losses and Warner had started to fumble at an alarming rate.

yeah, but it was time. He was cooked, and the offense was a disaster.
Yeah, that held up well.
