CB Depth Chart Shake Up

Blue Dog : 6/13/2024 1:58 am
Tre Herndon shakes up the CB depth chart a bit. I expect Flott still gets the first shot at CB2 but that the other Tre's are there for next crack. Beyond that Holmes and McCloud create an interesting situation. McCloud has a pretty big contract ($3M) for a backup and a special teamer, but he's also been the 6th Db in dime. Holmes lost his slot role but they have been using him outside after bringing him back on a minimum deal. McCloud saw some early first team slot reps during OTAs, but Phillips is the expected starter. I think we can officially write-off Aaron Robinson.

Start:

- Deonte Banks
- Cor'Dale Flott
- Andru Phillips

Depth:

- Tre Herndon: ideal depth at 28YO with over 3000 career snaps both inside and in the slot.
- Tre Hawkins: the Giants got ahead of themselves naming him the week 1 starter last year, but there is some raw talent for the year 2 player.
- Nick McCloud: the Swiss-army knife player has taken reps outside, in the slot, at safety, and even linebacker.

Compete:

- Darnay Holmes: he lost the staring slot job to Flott last year but he's back at camp and they have him working outside.
- Aaron Robinson: reports are he's alive.
- David Long Jr.: veteran who has played outside, a bit of an unknown.

Other:

- Alex Johnson (UDFA): the Giants gave him decent UDFA money so he has a good practice squad chance but until we know more it seems like he is outside looking in.
- Kaleb Hayes: athletic prospect from last year's practice squad.
- David Long Jr.: other other free agent who could be a good veteran practise squad guy.
- Stantley Thomas-Oliver: special teams guy before the Giants

Some talent st the position, more so then previous years. Excited to see who steps up and takes the starting roles. I think our defense can be top 15 with the pass rush, sound LB play and our seemingly good depth at corner.
Wasn't it mentioned

They're also working McCloud in the safety rotation?

They've run this in a couple of open OTAs:

An interesting coverage sub-package for #NYGiants this spring is DB heavy with Bobby Okereke and Nick McCloud at ILB with Banks and Flott on the outside, Pinnock and Belton at safety and Dru Phillips in the slot.

That would give Shane Bowen flexibility up front - new "NASCAR"?
Holmes

was working with the second-team outside (as you referenced).

Completely different backend schemes mean guys have a new lease on life, and Holmes may be one of those guys.
I suspect

we may carry an extra DB at the expense of an ILB under Bowen.

That's why I suspect they will label Simmons as a S because he will play both spots depending on the situation.
Not just CB

but throughout this roster, the Giants are clearly planning on their young players to step up and be significant contributors. They have added cheap veteran insurance, but the mindset is NOT "we need to add 'name' veteran free agent" to 'fix' a problem."

In other words, it's time for the guys they have drafted to step up to the plate.
Most important position for a team to have depth in
Dnew15 : 6/13/2024 8:55 am : link
especially with the luck the NYG have had in previous seasons at CB and injuries.
The interesting thing about Holmes
mittenedman : 6/13/2024 8:58 am : link
is, he was drafted as a zone corner for Patrick Graham. He never really fit Wink's scheme, but now we're back to more of a zone.

Henderson has his work cut out for him this year, for sure. I support the approach --let's find out what we have. Yes, it may backfire on them, but let's not kid ourselves --we're still rebuilding. It's year 3 for some of these guys --it's time.

Complete unknown still, Simmmons has been sidelined.

Note where Simmons was lining up here however...

Has a chance to be a very Fabian Moreau-like signing.
