NFT: Golf - U.S. Open at Pinehurst #2

section125 : 6/13/2024 7:23 am
Ok, the inevitable US Open thread. At an all time classic course at Pinehurst #2 course.

Sadly Jon Rahm out with a foot infection. It will be interesting to see what happens with the "bombers" this week as Pinehurst green are notoriously hard to hold and if groomed to ridiculous US Open standards will probably run 13+ on the Stimp meter while being small and crowned to begin with.

I do expect DeChambeau to challenge Scheffler. As always if Rory's putter is working he will be there. Expect Schauffele and Morikawa to be close. Koepka has been inconsistent when playing the combined events but with two Open wins he is dangerous...Hovland has been better as his wedge play has improved. Aberg has the right type of game for Pinehurst.

Have to admit this is my least favorite Major as the USGA always seems to over trick up the course. Instead of the supreme test of golf, it is often a contest of lucky breaks and bounces. They have been less tricky the last few years, but I still don't want to see well struck balls land in the center of the green trundle off to some horrendous lie.

Give Bryson credit, no one had gotten up and down from that bunker all week and to put it within 4 feet was a 1.7% chance

so kind of cool thing happened on golf channel after tournament, Johnson Wagner recreated the bunker shot with bryson watching holding the trophy, hits it to under 2 feet (though it was his 2nd attempt).

id have liked to see them recreate rory's putt and see how anyone does, i really think if you put 10 top guys through almost half miss if they dont have a look at the line prior.

Eric thanks for that link.

Funny thing is, when Bryson came over and they were talking in the bunker Bryson says he opted for the "chunk and run" so it would not go over the green.
When Johnson says "oh-I chunked it", Bryson says that is perfect and it went to 2 feet.

that whole segment was really cool. loved how wagner was complimenting bryson since fewer people say he's an a-hole now. im not a bryson fan but that was a great open sunday.

I have a friend that calls him DoucheChambeau - and he was a bit of a DBag. I noticed he has gotten better last couple years.
When he signed the kid's hat (in the wheelchair with Palsy) between holes - that was class.

It was a cool segment that ends with - Wanna go get a cold one with me? Sure!

pretty sure that's because most of the tour guys still dont want to hang out with him lol. but i agree, it does seem like he's at least changed a little bit.

Rory McIlroy snubs Bryson DeChambeau and flees US Open after 'biggest choke in history' plus leaves US Open IMMEDIATELY after humiliating Pinehurst collapse - and REFUSES to speak to media.

According to The Telegraph, DeChambeau was left asking officials why he hadn't seen McIlroy in the aftermath of the final round. The same publication pointed to DeChambeau's own decision to wait around to shake the hand of Xander Schauffele after narrowly losing to his compatriot at the PGA Championship in May.

Footage on social media showed McIlroy watching DeChambeau hole out at the 18th to beat him by a single stroke before heading for the door. He is said to have then headed straight for the airport - before the winner had even begun his victory press conference.

Agreed. But I think there is a lot more to this. I don't think Rory would have left if it was a European, PGA player (Shane Lowry) but since Bryson is an American and LIV player, it played out this way
If true thats even worse

PINEHURST, N.C. — Within seven minutes of Bryson DeChambeau’s ball landing in the cup, the ripping sound of tires skirting on pavement whipped through Pinehurst Resort as Rory McIlroy’s courtesy Lexus SUV pulled out of his 2011 U.S. Open champion parking place and drove away from the day he’ll never escape. He stared into the distance as his agents and caddie spoke around him. No interviews. The 35-year-old Northern Irishman simply tossed his clubs and workout bag into the trunk, slipped into the driver’s seat and threw it into reverse. The U.S. Open ended at 6:38 p.m. At 7:29 p.m., McIlroy’s Gulfstream 5 took off, leaving the Sandhills of North Carolina without his fifth major championship but with the collapse that will define him forever.

That is pretty poor
section125 : 6/17/2024 2:49 pm : link
leaving in a huff. They were the group ahead - so finished 10 minutes before DeChambeau?
LIV stuff aside, it is poor decorum. I will never blame anyone for taking the money. I will blame them if they can come back before some kind of compensation from LIV to those that stayed with the PGA Tour.

They are banned from PGA sponsored events, but the Masters is a private invitational, the Open is run by the Royal & Ancient Golf Club and the US Open is run by the USGA which is "open" to anyone that can qualify, including those already holding exemptions.
