Duggan: Daboll more calm this spring

Sean : 6/14/2024 9:29 am

There was a noticeable change in Daboll’s conduct during practices this offseason. In this same offseason program recap a year ago, it was noted that “Daboll had one of his patented red-faced explosions at almost every open practice this spring.”

There were no such eruptions, which were typically aimed at assistants for personnel miscues last year, during the five practices open to the media this spring. Daboll wouldn’t say if the calmer approach was a concerted effort, but he offered an interesting explanation for why he was less inclined to blow a gasket during practices.

“I’ve been obviously calling some of the plays, there’s an element of that,” Daboll said.

Seriously though, Daboll had a weird year last year. On the one hand, kudos to him for the team not quitting when down, and also I think he deserves credit for the performance of DeVito.

However, a lot of the stuff that put them in position to be down in the first place falls on him. Awful training camp, constant OL rotation, questionable roster decisions, the handling of the Graham Gano injury and the decision to kick the FG. At the end of the day you expect your team not to quit, and with all these other things that went on, it's why when I step back I think Daboll had a bad year last year and needs to rebound quickly here.

Apparently the 2017 and 2021 Giants didn't get that memo...
I never got excited about the yelling

But I think its a positive sign that he at least self-reflects and takes the time and effort to try and improve.

Remember, it was a very similar thing that turned Coughlin into a Super Bowl winning HC and, in my opinion, a Hall of Famer.

Yelling at coaches or players doesn't qualify as discord. There's no evidence of discord outside Wink/his cronies. To the contrary, the offseason showed that NFL coaches WANT to play for Daboll.

And the "charade of ambiguity" isn't fair either - why the F would/should Daboll say a word about decisions like that. It's freaking June and there's no upside to discussing it whether or not a decision's been made.

He's becoming just another muckraker.
Gut reaction, and probably totally unfair

Was to wonder if battle lines between Dabs and Wink were drawn that far back.

I'm inclined to agree. Other than the Jones situation (and that's admittedly a huge conditional), I think we're headed in the right direction.
Agree Homer

Hope he also recognized he needed some personal changes and also some related to play style on offense.

TC didn't lighten up a bit but the bigger thing was showing his players that he cared for them very deeply as young men outside of football imv. He was a more personable hard ass.

I like the weight loss.

Why would Daboll be blamed for poor roster decisions? Sure, he undoubtedly has some input, but those decisions are Schoen’s and Schoen’s alone. Place the blame where it belongs.

Daboll certainly deserves criticism for the poor start last year, especially considering how he ran camp, but given the raft of injuries to an already talent-starved roster, getting 6 wins with a UDFA QB making 6 starts is nothing short of miraculous.

Warts aside, the dude can coach.

I'm sure you're right....it worked like a charm with Coughlin. And yeah, for the NY Giants anyway, tablet tossing isn't the look they want to project.

I have no issue with either if he feels it's warranted.

I did at least.

Daboll

Even if Kafka isn't calling the plays, I think the additional title and responsibilities makes him more cognizant of what is going on in Daboll's head. That has improved their relationship. I also think Bowen is more of a "team player" as DC and will incorporate a scheme that hopefully doesn't put the offense behind the proverbial eight ball. The Las Vegas game I think was the tipping point. Daboll needed the defense to put stats aside and force the Raiders to have to have long drives to score. Instead, Wink does his own thing and now the injured offense has to match score for score.
I think Daboll is a good coach
Mike from Ohio : 6/14/2024 12:00 pm : link
and part of being a good coach is recognizing where you need to improve. Sometimes yelling and getting on someone is needed. But if it is how you operate every day, it loses it's effectiveness and just becomes tantrums.

I think he did not like the look of the drama with Wink and while he was not the driver of it, he probably wishes he could handle some things differently. If he is doing that, kudos to him.

Now don't run a soft camp and pre-season and we will be good to go!
Kudos HBart

Muckraker isn't used enough and I agree on Duggan, but assuming it's what he is told to do. He seems like a good dude and he knows the game.

I think he is a good coach and I have no problem with his authentic leadership - even if it means throwing a Surface in frustration when his players are missing in action. Loved how Parcells used to motivate his best players with the full range of his emotional authenticity.

I still believe that Daboll gets unfair criticism for not having the team ready last year. The team simply didn't believe in a DJ offense with no training wheels. My guess is they still don't and without an effective running game and DJ's inability to run given his injury history, look for the situation to be worse this year.

I do hope that Daboll doesn't get blamed for this. But my guess is, if Daboll can't figure out how to get DJ to a top ten level and the team has another six win season, he will be the scapegoat and may not see another year. I had hoped that Lock might actually get a shot and that Daboll might work his "Josh Allen magic" to improve Lock's accuracy and judgment, but I am now convinced that given the Trevor Lawrence contract, Mara/Schoen will be highly motivated to make DJ work and then claim victory by extending him at a "significant bargain".

Until pride is recognized as a deadly sin in East Rutherford, this team will likely continue to be in free fall irrespective of what Daboll does.

So now you have inside knowledge of what the locker room thinks to determine they had no faith in DJ

Didn’t realize that you were the ultimate insider

I think the article's fair and certainly not some sort of clickbait hit piece. The discord between Daboll and Wink is the only specific discord the article discusses.

Yes technically they're Schoen's decision but if he goes after a player that BD wants and it's a bust who are you blaming?

Dabs anger "issues" is one of the more overblown stories I can recall in awhile. So he screams...so did BP & TC, both of whom had successful tenures here. He's hard on his assistants...good, he should be because I bet he's even harder on himself. This is football FFS.

offense was terrible......yelling at the d coach just doesn't cut it.

The I pad thing and chewing out that rookie for being offsides don't show command.

OTA's aren't a good measure of regular season composure.

coughlin was a successful college HC and took an expansion team to the conference championship game or was it two conference championship games. Daboll hasn’t done shit. You are naive if you don’t think someone in the family didn’t talk to Daboll about his antics.
