NFT: A Song on Father's Day

Bill in UT : 6/14/2024 3:49 pm
I haven't posted a song in a while. I only wrote one song directed towards my dad. As they say in the movies, it's based loosely on a true story. I can only link the site, you've got to schroll down to #138 if you'd care to listen. Maybe it'll speak to some of you. As I've mentioned in the past, I just did lyrics. It's not me singing or playing.

...A FATHER'S DAY POEM
BY PAUL GILMARTIN

Dear old dad it's father's day
and I just want you to know
you're the best there ever was
at the things I'll list below:

Stinking up a bathroom
Snoring like a beast
Teaching me to mow the lawn
before I had front teeth.

Showing how to hide your feelings
Over-emphasizing winning
Teaching me the birds and bees
at a Cub game between innings.

Turning off our cartoons for
news and "Meet The Press".
Picking a vacation spot
where clowns could get depressed

Never taking out the dog.
Forgetting my friends names

Picking at your nose while coaching
all my baseball games.

I guess as I grow older,
I'm supposed to get like you,
and in some ways I must admit
I think that this is true.

When I yell my veins pop out
I've yet to touch a broom
I chuckle in my Lazy Boy
when gas clears out a room.

But one thing you won't catch me do
as long as I can breathe...
That's wearing shorts around the yard
with dress-socks to my knee.

The song is really basically about my younger brother who played centerfield for St. Johns in the mid-70's, then ws drafted in the 17th round, iirc, by the Astros and spent a season in rookie ball, then a couple of months of A ball before he moved on to the real world. But he came out of it with a Topps baseball card and a Louisville Slugger with his name on it :)

RAWLINGS BASEBALL GLOVE
(verse)
I seem to take his glove out every time I miss him
The leather's cracked and stained with sweat and tears
He used to throw with me when he got home around sunset
I still pretend I'm pitching to him here
(chorus)
He had more blessings than regrets
And he had less time than he had love
He left so many memories
Of cherished days he spent with me
And he left me his Rawling's baseball glove
(verse)
I was pretty small and kind of clutzy
So he taught me workin' hard's the only way
His face lit up the day I made the All-Stars
And I cried when he wasn't at the game
(repeat chorus)
(bridge)
Well daddy had a heart attack, we found out later on
We made it to the hospital before he was gone
He took my hand, said " keep the glove for when we're in the pro's"
I played two years in Triple A, but then I'm sure he knows

(repeat chorus)
(tag)
He left so many memories, and his Rawlings baseball glove
Good stuff Bill

and I admire you for sharing stuff like this.

My relationship with my father is best described by a quote attributed to Mark Twain, but recently has induced some skepticism if it was in fact a Twain quote, but regardless who actually authored it, it definitely seems like something Twain would say:

Quote:
When I was a boy of fourteen, my father was so ignorant I could hardly stand to have the old man around. But when I got to be twenty-one, I was astonished at how much he had learned in seven years

probably almost every boy has felt this way.

thanks, pj. And I've heard that quote, it definitely sounds Twainian
Let me add to my story. Our dad actually did die from his 3rd heart attack, but he was 69, my brother around 40 at the time. Dad pitched and played football at New Eutrect HS and 1 year at Brooklyn College. He was invited to try out for the Dodgers, but instead enlisted in the Navy for the Big One. He lived vicariously through my brother and fortunately was around long enough to enjoy his whole "career"

The song “Everything I Own”by Bread was written by David Gates and is about his father who had passed away. Most people assume it’s about a lost love but it’s mourning the loss of his father. Also, “The Living Years” is another tribute to a lost father.

In the living years is one of my favorite songs and I can't listen to it without getting choked up. It's been a little over a year since I lost my dad and I still feel like a piece of me was lost that day. So much unsaid. Between that song and James Blunt's song Monsters, I lose it.
