NFT: 57 Sandwiches That Define New York City

gidiefor : Mod : 6/18/2024 8:01 am
This article in today's Times ignites an old debate at BBI -- What is the best sammich.

I have figured out that I am allowed to give gift articles from the NY Times - so the link below should not block you if you want to read this article. There are a lot of items on this list that: (a) I've never had, (b) I probably never will have, and (c) that I'm probably not too excited about having; and in the comments there are suggestions about sandwiches they left off that should be on this list.

So I will put it out to you -- What is your favorite sammich?

and Chicken Parm is banned for obvious reasons : )

if youhave 57 definitive sandwiches
TJ : 6/18/2024 8:09 am : link
you have no definitive sandwich

Pastrami or Corned Beef on Rye
Bagel w/lox and cream cheese

are the sandwiches I think of and I ususally get at least one of them every time I'm in town
If we’re talking about a true NYC sandwich,

Katz Deli pastrami on rye with spicy brown mustard has to be in the mix. Is a hot dog a sandwich? If so, do we go with a Nathan’s dog from Coney Island, or a dirty water dog from any borough?
Totally agree with Katz's

How can you leave out a sausage with peppers and onions?
Too many listed to be considered a best of.
Only 1 sandwich defines NYC,

My go to sandwich was a Taylor Ham and Egg on a hard roll.
It’s been a longtime but I loved that sandwich

You can find Taylor Ham in NYC occasionally, but that's a distinctly NJ sandwich.
How do you not have Katz's pastrami sandwich in there?
Gforce11 : 6/18/2024 9:52 am : link
the list is dubious at best.
No legit lobster roll on the list
Darwinian : 6/18/2024 9:58 am : link
and there are many great ones in NYC including Pearl and Mermaid Inn.

good to see

Roll N Roaster get a mention. But if you have them you have to have Brennan and Carr as well.
Katz's pastrami obviously leads the pack.
MOOPS : 6/18/2024 11:06 am : link
A sausage and pepper hero has to be on that list somewhere.

It IS on the list. But good for you that you finally found a place to share a weird hot take about Katz's bread.
I'm still annoyed

the Defonte's on 3rd closed down.
A few thoughts
Matt M. : 6/18/2024 2:14 pm : link
1) Before reading, the first sandwich that came to mind is Katz' pastrami.

2) The next is one I only recently had for the first time (about 6 months ago) - The Bomb from Sal, Kris, & Charlies. Unreal and even at $17 it is a bargain. It feeds me and my son, sometimes for 2 days. Something like 18 ingredients on it and somehow does not feel like too much.

3) I have yet to try the chopped sandwich craze, but the place my wife keeps hounding me try is Farmer in the Deli. This place and Sal, Kris, & Charlie's above seem to have been doing their signature sandwiches for a long time, but only recently exploded thanks to social media.

4) Agree about Roll N Roaster - can't have this and not Brennan and Carr

5) Defonte's only on the list for potato, egg, and cheese seems a miss. They are as much or more known for their steak sandwich and a couple of others.

6) I didn't love it, but surprised I didn't see Fernando's on there for their panelle sandwich. People come from all over for it.

how would you guys compare

an NYC Chopped Cheese to a Philly Cheesesteak?

As much as it pains me to say, I think I prefer the Cheesesteak. Maybe I'm just not getting my CC at the right spot.
Regarding Katz's
DonQuixote : 6/18/2024 5:05 pm : link
It had to be there, but I prefer Pastrami Queen on the UES.

It was good that they stayed above the fray on Bagels, which is of course a topic on it's own. I like the Sable at Barney Greengrass and I think the hand cut NOVA at Tal's on Lex and 83rd is as good as it gets. H&H not so much but to each his own.

A chopped cheese uses ground beef. A cheesesteak uses sliced ribeye. The good places anyway.

Yea, I know about the different types of meat. But to me, I'll take sliced ribeye over ground beef.

Right, which is why it shouldn’t pain you. A top flight cheesesteak is excellent.
Bacon egg and cheese on a hard roll

Is perfect and I don't understand why I can't get it outside of the Northeast.
These kinds of list always seem so arbitrary and basically advertising
steve in ky : 6/19/2024 6:19 pm : link
Don’t get me wrong I think it’s fine to try and support local businesses and I’m sure the ones mentioned benefit from it, but almost of these of these “best” type lists are just some writers subjective take on it
57 is ridiculous
UConn4523 : 6/19/2024 7:03 pm : link
everyone has 2 or 3 go to sandwiches, the author should as well. A veggie Italian sub defines NYC? lol. This is just a list of sandwiches (no offense, OP).

christian : 6/19/2024 7:33 pm : link
Before I opened the article, I turned to my wife and said "they better have included the vegitalian from Court Street."

That sandwich changed me. I appreciate some of my favorite things to eat on Earth less after eating it.

It's the one thing I miss the most about New York City.
the sandwich
RasputinPrime : 6/19/2024 9:11 pm : link
is the ultimate food. There is no one that defines a city as undefinable as NYC.
Guys... they have a long list because..
DefenseWins : 6/20/2024 6:29 am : link
as you scroll down they can display more ads. They actually do not care if the list is correct. They know people will click because of the subject matter.

My wife wanted to love that, but didn't. Personally, I like their lox sandwich best. The rest that I've tried there I have liked, but just think they are not worth the price.

christian : 6/20/2024 8:30 am : link
My wife and I lived down the block on Houston from the Sullivan Street location, and would split the vegitalian. I can't woof down that much bread, so considering lunch for two the price was OK for me.

Unfortunately, I do knock off a whole sandwich from them. I don't find their sandwiches particularly filling.

Get a hero from Sal, Kris & Charlie's and the two of you will eat for no less than 2 days.
