NFT: Yanks promote Ben Rice.

Will be with the team tonight.
Yankees calling up hot prospect Ben Rice to replace Anthony Rizzo - ( New Window )
I like it. Why not?
Heisenberg : 6/18/2024 9:45 am : link
He's an interesting guy.
Glad he gets his shot
Crazed Dogs : 6/18/2024 9:45 am : link
Thought they go DJ at 1st and Cabrera at 3b.
Excellent news.
Dave in Hoboken : 6/18/2024 9:46 am : link
Let's see what the kid can do.
I guess he becomes
section125 : 6/18/2024 9:47 am : link
emergency catcher too....
Hope he gets
k2tampa : 6/18/2024 9:52 am : link
Some time rather than just being there for emergency reasons. He should be able to hit what LeMahieu has, plus he has much more power.
he's actually primarily a C, he's been learning 1b
Victor in CT : 6/18/2024 9:53 am : link
wouldn't be the worst thing if he could be a viable option behind the plate.
Love this move
HBart : 6/18/2024 9:59 am : link
It seems un-Boone like. I think he's seeing what the fans are - DJLM is probably done as an even average hitter; even if he's not they can only wait so long.
excellent
Stu11 : 6/18/2024 10:04 am : link
lets see what the kid has the next month or so before the deadline to see if we need to make a deal for help at the corners.
Love it
UConn4523 : 6/18/2024 10:06 am : link
my favorite Yankees teams are when the young guys step up and play a solid role. Seems like we haven’t gotten much of that until recently. He doesn’t need to be great, but I’ll take solid.
I'm pleasantly surprised they made this decision. Now
Strahan91 : 6/18/2024 10:08 am : link
we have to hope that he'll get a real shot and isn't being called up to sit on the bench and play sparingly. I wonder if the corresponding aaa move will be to call up Agustin Ramirez who's been absolutely destroying aa

I saw Rizzo is out 1-2 months. Have to think Rice plays a lot as long as he’s not completely lost out there.
Hopefully he does well
Beer Man : 6/18/2024 10:36 am : link
the team certainly needs more production from the corners. Having said that, the team needs to be patients as it generally takes time for a MiLB player to adjust to MLB pitching.
Ooh, this is my bat signal.
Jim in Hoboken : 6/18/2024 10:48 am : link
I really don’t want the corpse of DJ at 1B. Let Rice play exclusively at 1B and see if he can hack it. As disappointing as Wells has been, there is Ramirez coming up, so don’t even tinker with Rice at C.

How long before Durbin comes back? As much as people go to bat for Torres, will we really miss that .230 average, 6 HR’s, and unreliable defense? That bases loaded AB against Boston was as atrocious as it gets.
Let's hope he doesn't just rot on the bench
Jints in Carolina : 6/18/2024 10:55 am : link
Rizzo being out to me is addition by subtraction.
Is he a fantasy option at this point?
GiantBlue : 6/18/2024 10:56 am : link
Or a wait and see.

Thanks!
They need to drop 2 players from the 40 man roster
Ron from Ninerland : 6/18/2024 11:12 am : link
To allow for Cole's return and Rice's promotion. My guess is that Burdi gets moved form the 15 day IL to the 60, the other move is less certain. Do they immediately put Rizzo on the 60 ? Do they DFA Grisham. Does Peraza go to 60 if thats even possible ?

If Rizzo heals up quickly he could be back in less than 2 months , so its not automatic that he'll go on the 60 day IL
I wonder if this is for real
Matt in SGS : 6/18/2024 11:20 am : link
or if this is an audition to use him as a featured trade chip in July/August at the deadline. Might be a bit of both.

It is obviously real as they have to add him to the 40 man roster, which means somebody is being DFA'd. I think it is necessity as they don't have a vet first baseman.
Is a chance to showcase him? Maybe, but I doubt that is even a concern.
I think
ManningLobsItBurressAlone : 6/18/2024 11:25 am : link
they're at 39 now, and the Rice move happening today puts them at 40. Cole will be activated tomorrow, so I think we only need one move. I think Clarke to the 60 is a realistic move.

Problem is that there are almost no first basemen who figure to be available who are actually good. The trade market for corner infielders looks horrid.
The guy really has been hitting.
Heisenberg : 6/18/2024 11:36 am : link
He can't be worse than Rizzo at the plate but will be a big step down in the field for sure.

I think the lack of trade options is why the Yanks brought him up. They'd normally leave him down there to keep the trade value highest rather than let him come up and be exposed. Since it doesn't look like a great market, he may be the best available option if he shows he can hit and he's 25 - nearly the same age a Soto haha.

Rizzo hasn't been great in the field this year at all. I don't see how anyone can be much worse.
I haven't seen a lot of games this year, tbh

Rizzo and Torres have cost them a few games with their fielding, the KC game in particular as Rizzon was lazy going after the groundball hit by somebody in the 9th. Im happy they are giving this kid a chance and not using DJ and Oswaldo and bringing up Kevin Smith or something.

No Rizz has not been "good". He is not close to his normal self which is one of the best gloveman in baseball.

However -

Ben Rice is a catcher converting to 1st base and more than likely will be worse. How can it be otherwise?

God, I hope not. Let's see. He should/could be better offensively, at least.
Rice is interesting
rich in DC : 6/18/2024 12:05 pm : link
He's a lefty power bat who takes walks who carries a high OBP and SLG percentage. That's most due to walks and a high percentage of his hits being for extra bases.

This year he split time between AA and AAA. Of his 61 hits, 15 were HR and 12 were doubles. He also walked 40 times in 60 games, while striking out 56 times in 222 ABs- or about 1 in just over 4 ABs. Not terrible but there is some swing and miss there. He can even run a bit, though no one will mistake him for a speedster. He had 11 SB last season and 9 this season, only getting caught 4 times over those two seasons.

His fielding is a work in progress. He has 22 games at 1B this season- and only played 33 games there prior to this season. He has primarily been a C- though his struggles in controlling the running game are obvious- last season baserunners successfully stole 62 bases in 70 attempts and this season were successful taking 54 in 60 attempts. With that said, he has success with the pitching staff in AA last year and even caught Gerrit Cole on a rehab game.

Of interest- he grew up as a hockey player and got some toughness through that. He went to Dartmouth- meaning he's got some brains too- but at the same time, it did set him back as he lost almost two entire seasons of play due to COVID in the Ivy League. He took some time to get over health issues early in his career as well as establish his bat.

So is this a case where he has failed as a catcher so they're hiding him at 1B ? Or is this a case of that like his bat so much that they're playing him at first on the days he doesn't catch ?

It's a real shame that not one of our OF/DH's...
BC Eagles94 : 6/18/2024 12:46 pm : link
has ever played 1B, to be an option there. Then we could bring up Dominguez to play the OF, with one of Judge/Stanton/Soto/Verdugo playing 1B.

During Spring Training they worked Judge a little at 1st base. Dominguez is on the 7-day IL so is not an option at this point. He pulled something in his back on an awkward swing, they were supposed to be running tests yesterday to determine the severity.

If you're in a very deep league, sure, add him. In shallower leagues, wait and see, unless you have roster space or want to take a shot on a low probability Yankees lottery ticket.

Ian Hamilton is going on the IL with a right lat strain. He’ll no throw for 3-4 weeks.

Cody Poteet has a right tricep strain. No throw for 1-2 weeks.

Jasson Dominguez is awaiting MRI results.

Scott Effross and JT Brubaker will start a rehab assignment tomorrow in Tampa.

Prior to tonight’s game, the Yankees made the following roster moves:
• Recalled LHP Clayton Andrews (#74) from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.
• Signed LHP Anthony Misiewicz (#58) to a Major League contract and selected him to the active roster.
• Signed C/INF Ben Rice (#93) to a Major League contract and selected him to the active roster.
• Placed RHP Ian Hamilton on the 15-day injured list (retroactive to 6/17) with a right lat strain.
• Placed RHP Cody Poteet on the 15-day injured list (retroactive to 6/15) with a right triceps strain.
• Placed INF Anthony Rizzo on the 10-day injured list (retroactive to 6/17) with a right forearm fracture.
Additionally, a corresponding 40-man move will be announced later.

It is a lot of injuries
HBart : 6/18/2024 5:59 pm : link
But Rizzo truly is addition through subtraction. He was hitting better, and maybe (just maybe) he does't have a fork in his back, but the timing of his fracture is superb. Things will be in much clearer focus as the deadline nears.

Even when the geezers hit, it's not the same. When the kids get on base things happen. When the geezers get on it takes 2 hits or an act of God to get them home.
Love the call-up

If their name is Stanton and occasionally Rizzo. Remember Judge is 32.
