Mentioned in the end of season thread how Goodrow's underlying metrics in the playoffs were really poor and shooting 40% (though admittedly they were some awesome goals) masked that.
This is a smart, proactive move by Drury. Maybe he can sell high and get someone to take the full cap hit off the books. Three more seasons at 3.6 per is really tough for a team with limited paths to clearing cap space. It's cold business for a guy who puts his body on the line, but a necessary move IMO. We'll see where it leads
I forget if it was athletic or THW, but it had a list of buyout candidates.
I am not a fan of buyouts in general, but the way it would work financially for a Goodrow buyout I'm not sure there has been too many stronger cases for a buyout making sense.
3. Barclay Goodrow
Center, New York Rangers
Age: 31
Contract: 3 years remaining, $3.64 million AAV
Buyout Structure: Cap credit, then 5 seasons varying from $1 mil to $3.5 mil
Scoop: The Rangers think highly of Goodrow, who also scored some Empire State-sized goals for the Blueshirts in the playoffs. He netted more goals (6) in 16 postseason contests than he did (4) in 80 regular season games. Go figure. Nonetheless, $3.6 million is way too much to pay your fourth-line center, and there doesn’t appear to be much upward mobility in the lineup for Goodrow. He does his job, and he does it well, but his contract throws New York’s cap balance out of whack. Couple that with the fact that the Rangers could buy him out this month and not only not have a penalty, but a unique salary cap credit of $247,222 next season to effectively increase their cap to $88.247 million? That feels like a no-brainer. By 2026-27, that one painful year of the buyout, the salary cap should be north of $97 million.
Drury has created any path forward to rid himself of one big contract, and a plan to rework the team into one better built for the late playoff rounds.
This doesn't bode well:all of Drury's first year acquisitions are gone
killed penalties, good on face offs, stuck up for his teammates. He's the type of player most teams need during the playoffs, but I understand paying over $3.5 million for a 4th line center is a bit much.
Is reporting that there is “belief” of an arrangement for the Sharks to claim Goodrow off waivers. We’ll see soon enough.
I wouldn't do it, but I can see it. SJS may struggle to get to the cap floor next year. Getting a versatile veteran is not bad even at an inflated salary - for them.
They need to find some way to spend $10M and don't have any obvious places that make sense and that's with $5.6M in retained salaries from Karlsson, Burns and Hertl.

Maybe Drury knows that the Sharks will claim him. He has a close relationship with Mike Grier.
RE: This doesn't bode well:all of Drury's first year acquisitions are gone
I missed a lot (or very little) since we went on vaca on 28 May. Can't say any of it surprised but spared me the heartache and frustration. Maybe at appropriate occasion I'll invite a reprise for a 'what ails the Rangers?' to the usual suspects. (: Leaving it at this: if they're going to run this back leaning on those two prongs as key, the result likely won't be much different than the past three years, plus ça change, etc. Drury's adds for SCP were sorely lacking and the 'core' weren't good enough. Is there much in his track record since his hire to believe Drury will do better, even with Goodrow's cap hit going away? He's already taking mulligans for what he has done.
Vive la 1994 and never mind what pj says.
Last night was my first hockey viewing since ECF Game 4--what an absolute barn burner in a game prolly most thought would not be played. 2nd and 3rd periods about as wild as any periods in recent memory. Conn Smythe for #97
About the Goodrow waiver action. “ Goodrow has a 15-team no-trade list. It’s unclear if San Jose was on that list, but it only would have mattered if the Rangers tried to trade him. The waiver system potentially served as a workaround”.
Would the Rangers consider placing Trouba on waivers to get around his modified no trade contract where he names 15 team no trade list on July 1?

Uncle Larry said that Goodrow didn’t want to go to San Jose and is pissed on how things went down.
I wouldn't be surprised if someone writes a story on the angle "free agents won't want to come to NY if they get around the NTC by waiving the player knowing a team will pick them up".
Besides NYC being a destination, players go where the money is, IMO, so I don't think there is a lot of truth to that but it won't stop someone from writing it.
nothing wrong with doing it IMO by Drury, in fact its smart, but Goodrow also has a right to be pissed.

We should be so lucky that 4th line free agent forwards start turning down ridiculous contracts here.

Larry Brooks already quasi-penned it, but Barclay can spare me the crocodile tears. He had an abysmal regular season and is getting paid to be more than a 4th liner who kills penalties. He probably should have never been offered the contract in the first place, but he should also have the self awareness to realize the team needed to ditch him.
you're right Jon and I don't think anyone else was giving Goodrow that contract. He should send Tom Wilson a nice bottle of Scotch every Christmas as a thank you gift, but the principle is if you offer the NTC the player expects it means he won't wind up someone where doesn't want to be.
I'm not defending Goodrow, I can just understand how he probably views it.

Yeah fair enough. And he's allowed to be bummed about going from a cup contender to one of the worst teams in the league. But I'm not sure I'll feel so bad for him and also I'm pretty confident this won't impact anyone coming to NYR.
I'm a little surprised the NHL (among other leagues) doesn't have a mechanism for pay-cuts or restructures like the NFL does.
won't be surprised if there is a grievance of some sort
filed by the players association. I'd be annoyed if I were Goodrow, too.
Of course, I'm happy with the fact that he's off the books. It's absolutely wild that a known 4th-line player was given a NMC of any sort like that.
Salary is a funny thing. As a worker of any sort, you always want to maximize your earnings. But it's worth bearing in mind that the better you do in that negotiation, the higher your name is on the list of things to look at when it comes time for austerity / expense allocation.
Of course, sports has some additional elements that make it different (guaranteed contracts in the NHL, and the fact that the organization deciding it's time for you to go may mean geographically up-ending your family life).
If he had trade value they would have traded him - but he didn't so he was placed on waivers. It's a business - every player knows this, including Goodrow. He's a likeable guy so it's a bummer but an absolutely necessary move for the Rangers.
Don’t feel sorry for Goodrow: It’s a business decision move
I’m sure Barclay didn’t feel bad about cashing those checks this year.
Honestly, I don’t have a lot of faith in Drury making the proper moves to strengthen the team.
But I hope he proves me wrong

So of course my real point is...
STOP THROWING AROUND NMC's LIKE THEY'RE TIC-TACS.
Don't know what their grievance could possibly claim, given that in order to buy a player out he has to first clear waivers.
The fact that the Sharks claimed him sucks for Goodrow, but that's the CBA his players' association approved.
that any team would willingly step into this Goodrow contract.
So, some have speculated that there may be another shoe to drop in the short or intermediate term between SJ and NYR that would essentially represent compensation for them taking Goodrow's contract off of Drury's hands.
Hopefully not the case, as I'm quite pleased with the result for now and would just as soon never hear anything more about it.
But if I put myself in the shoes of a Sharks fan, I'm thinking "what the actual fuck are we doing?", followed by "we better be getting back a significant favor of some sort from the Rangers".
Anakim is on to something with the Grier/Drury connection, but also SJS needs to do some business to reach the salary floor.
Arizona had been famous for buying up or trading for retired players (like Pronger) so they get the cap benefit but don't have to pay them but those are drying up. As bad a contract as Goodrow is, he's probably a better fit on SJS with all their youth and lack of top end veteran talent.
they (CHI) actually signed Corry Perry for that purpose and he didn't last due to off ice issues. I never got the whole story there.
Not buying the Bedard's mom story?
100%, emphatic, no.
John Scott told the story on his podcast.
he said on a road trip in Columbus, Perry drank too much and made a pass at an NBC staff member. And due to the history in CHI they (maybe understandably) went scorched earth and treated the guy like Hannibal Lecter.
if you believe John Scott....but why not just say that? Seems MUCH better than the speculation.

Sucks we won't be able to get anything of value for Goodrow, but at least his contract would be off the books.

huh? they are all older, rental types or veteran fill in players.

So what? Drury hasn't been on the job that long and yet all his acquisitions from year one are gone. I didn't even include Blais in that list.
Greg and I correctly called out now terrible this was at the time.

And me! It made no sense to give a bottom-six player like Goodrow a long-term deal with a NTC
