NFT: NHL - Draft, Free Agency, Awards, Trades - Off-season Thread

pjcas18 : 6/25/2024 8:27 am
The SC finals are in the rearview and the longest season in NHL history is put to bed.

The NHL Awards are handed out on Thursday night and the draft begins Friday night at the Sphere in Vegas.

The off-season is expected to be a busy one with the first salary cap increase since COVID. The players association opted to leave salaries as is instead of accepting a pay cut during the COVID season(s) and to do that they basically borrowed against future earnings, which suppressed the cap at the current levels.

Anyway, lot of activity could happen between now, the draft and free agency. Several big names rumored to be on the trading block.

Trevor Zegras (MTL and NYR among those named as "interested")
Martin Necas
Patrik Laine
Linus Ullmark (just traded to OTT)
Nikolaj Ehlers
Maybe Mitch Marner and more and then there is buyouts, FA, etc.

Here is the Ullmark trade FWIW:

TRADE ALERT: The #Sens have acquired G Linus Ullmark from @NHLBruins in exchange for (Boston’s original) ’24 first-round draft pick (no. 25 overall), C Mark Kastelic and G Joonas Korpisalo. As part of the transaction, the #Sens will retain 25% of Korpisalo’s remaining salary.… pic.twitter.com/0xRMxi8wZS

a 2027 2nd round pick and using $3.5M of cap room impacts in almost any meaningful way what the Rangers can do at the 2025 deadline.

And I think Reilly helps them get to the deadline more than any roster player does. Drury has been pretty mid as a GM, but this is not a move I'd be critical of him about.

I like Chychrun, don't know if a deal was there, but also don't think this move completely negated that potential one - because as you say would have required a roster player going the other way - such as Lindgren.

Yeah, this isn't a burn the house down move. But the margin between Cup winner and failure is so small. Everything's overanalyzed.

I think they needed to make a bigger change at D than at 1RW, frankly.

I don't get the Pinto love among the fan base, if he were from Ontario nobody would be clamoring for him. Other than goal scoring, which is a huge premium I admit, jgp is a better player. The wrist injury/nerve damage has ruined his shot, but he's still very good at everything else. I'd rather move Lee.

i think it's more that he's 23 years old than the long island thing. He was on a 20g/50 point pace last year carrying a +9 and he's over 50% on faceoffs for his career - with really good g/60's both ways.

i cant say ive seen him play more than a dozen times or have the most informed opinion of him in all zones but a lot less goals occurred with him on ice compared to ott's other top TOI forwards.

i dont think it's just the shooting w/ jgp either, the full 200 regressed (though tbf everyone's full 200 regressed w/ lane). if pinto is a younger better version of jgp i think that's worth a first round pick.

In theory yes, acquiring rfa aged guys would be a huge coup. Totally worth moving picks for. I just don't see it with Pinto. I am admittedly a skating nazi, Pinto is a bottom quartile skater (jgp 81st btw) I'll have to look closer at jgp regression, though currently I don't have access to the good fancy stats. The fact the pk went from top5 for years to shit show is damning.

for islanders no matter what. They are 1m under the cap right now but with 21/23 players. they tendered 3 RFA F's (wahlstrom, holmstrom, iskahov) but im pretty sure there's no way to afford more than 1 unless they somehow lose some salary.

Pageau buyout saves 2.75m this year, 2.25m next year, then costs an extra +1.25m in each of the 2 years after that. Not terrible. though im sure their preference is to use his $5m slot as a trade chip along with picks and maybe 1 of the RFA forwards.

Believe any of their RFA's getting an ARB award would trigger a buyout window later this summer, so they have time. With Horvat, Nelson, Maclean, Czikas, plus Barzal, JGP is a luxury it seems they may have been willing to sacrifice for Duclair.

Or maybe they will play the season with 22 active roster.

This Drury/Trouba thing is a clusterfuck
Anakim : 7/1/2024 8:56 pm : link
Arthur Staple wrote that Trouba and his agent, Kurt Overhardt, didn't submit his list prior to today, which seems to suggest that Drury assumed he would accept a trade to Detroit because it's Trouba's home and his boyhood team. It was then leaked to Uncle Larry to put pressure on them.

And then Trouba got hold of it and was caught off-guard and didn't submit his list until today, which presumably had Detroit on it.

Vince Mercogliano wrote the following:

Latest from Vince:

"Trouba has been a central figure in establishing an all-for-one, selfless culture the last few seasons, while Goodrow was one of the team's most respected veterans. There's a perception among teammates that their situations could have been handled with more openness and dignity, according to one source, with those feelings extending to other team employees who have been let go in recent years. At the top of that list is longtime trainer Jim Ramsay, who was suddenly fired last year. He was not acknowledged upon his return to Madison Square Garden with the Montreal Canadians on Feb. 15, which apparently didn't sit well with a number of players, either."

Drury has a bit of a rep of being...cut-throat? Backstabbing? Whatever you want to call it. From the moment he got the job and Gorton and JD were fired, through the Kravtsov stuff, the Lias Andersson reported stuff, the Jim Ramsay stuff, the Goodrow stuff, and now, the Trouba stuff.
......
BrettNYG10 : 7/1/2024 9:07 pm : link
If that's true, it's pretty obviously not how you handle it. I advocate for the cut throat approach, but you can do it while not being forthcoming and honest.

*While being forthcoming and honest
And here's the issue according to Uncle Larry:
Anakim : 7/1/2024 9:07 pm : link
"When Trouba signed this current seven-year, $56M contract in July of 2019 after having been acquired as a pending restricted free agent from Winnipeg, his five-year no-movement clause was designed to expire in conjunction with his wife Kelly Tyson-Trouba’s completion of her three-year residency at a New York hospital.

But Dr. Tyson-Trouba’s residency was deferred for a year at the start so that the program which she is required to complete will end instead on July 1, 2025. The Troubas also welcomed their first child, a boy named Axel, in mid-January.

There is no guarantee that Jacob Trouba would accept a trade even to a club on his approved list if that means leaving his wife and nine-month-old (as of training camp) behind. It is not as if Dr. Tyson-Trouba can pick up, transfer her credits to another hospital, accompany her husband and still be licensed as a physician.

We are told that has become part of the league-wide conversation, with several teams that otherwise would have been in big-time on Trouba now likely to wait until next year when Dr. Tyson-Trouba’s residency ends with the defenseman having one final season on his contract.

Sources report that communication between Trouba, his camp and Drury and management have been professional without animosity that would infect or negatively impact the defenseman’s role as captain. If nothing further develops, it might become a one-sentence Q&A the first day of training camp."
I remember
pjcas18 : 7/1/2024 9:08 pm : link
this coming up before with a different player.

There are two processes I have read for providing the teams on a M-MTC.

One is start of the league year and it's usually on the player I believe. If they don't change the list at that time it's assumed the last list is still valid.

two is on-demand. the team can request the list from the player if/when they are looking to trade the player.

not sure which category Trouba's contract is in. I do think it is in the contract though when the names need to be provided. or it's defined in the CBA and could refer to the CBA.

the fact Drury just assumed Trouba would accept a trade somewhere, anywhere, seems borderline malpractice and to let it get this far and leak to the public makes it look even worse.

If I understand what I read above correctly.
....
BrettNYG10 : 7/1/2024 9:34 pm : link
Also, I think you can transfer credits for a residency. But I'm not an expert here.
sounds to me like a situation where
bigbluehoya : 7/2/2024 8:25 am : link
the PR-angle on this started to look ugly enough that some senior non-hockey folks may have called off the dogs.

No inside information, just reading the room a little bit.

I've got no hard feelings toward Trouba about it, unless it comes to light that he was making threats about not reporting to camp even for teams not on his NT list.

I've been a little bit surprised (I almost certainly shouldn't be) about how negative NYR fans have been in the last 24-48 hours.

It's a very good team, albeit imperfect. The imperfections were created years ago with haphazard use of NMCs.

Coming into the offseason, my greatest concern was that they'd do things that they'd be forced to live with beyond the next 1-2 seasons. They've avoided that up to this point.

When I look at the contracts signed around the league yesterday, there are extremely few that I'd have liked to see inked here. 2-3 seasons from now, the is going to be a litany of contracts around the league that look like boat-anchors.

It was always the case that the 2024-5 NYR lineup was going to look disturbingly similar to 23-24. It's not a terribly exciting thought, but there are far worse things.

Here out, just don't do anything with Lindgren longer than 2 seasons and I'll live. I'd still love to see something get done about Trouba, but it feels like that ship may have sailed. If they can truly commit themselves to keeping him in a third pair role, it isn't the end of the world.
I don't know how this would work
pjcas18 : 7/2/2024 8:36 am : link
and I am not an expert on this, so I could be wrong, but I don't think it is realistic, it sounds like fear mongering. Once the trade is done, to a team allowable per his 15 team NT list, the Rangers responsibility is over and from what I know it's not the Rangers problem.

at all. I hate to say this about players, but I think he's one of those "empty stat" players, who almost never "creates". Hard to describe what I mean, and it's not really a criticism overall the guy is a successful NHL player, but he's not a player I would want in my top 9.

I guess the $$$ is fair and for secondary or tertiary scoring, you could do worse, but he is not a player I would want to rely on for anything.

I do like Arvidsson and think of him as a glue guy one of those players every contender should have been in on.

As I scrolled through twitter, a Rangers fan who is a Trouba fan, posted a video of Trouba's greatest hits. That hit on Kadri is in my top 5 my favorite hockey plays the past few years. I don't even dislike Kadri, I like him, but it was just textbook. A lot art in the NHL and it can be such a momentum changer. Since I was in youth hockey and we just started hitting, a nicely timed blow up hit sometimes jazzed up the bench more than even a goal did. I don't think it's that different in the NHL.

Not sure there is a team in a worse cap situation than #Avs. It is hellacious.

11 forwards (with Landeskog and Nichushkin)
5 defensemen
2 goalies

And they have... (checks notes) ... $300k in cap space. 😳 Legit not sure where they go from here.
I think they will get relief
pjcas18 : 7/2/2024 12:02 pm : link
for both Landeskog and Nichushkin - providing them $13M in usable space.

However if Landeskog can come back and play (close to his former self), that would be huge. He was a top 20-25 player in the NHL before the injuries. Think a better version of Tom Wilson.

Either way, I believe they will get cap relief for Val - in the player assistance program.

if it's bigger $$ and longer team then I'd question it.

other than kotkaniemi and isles dont have the cap room to do it. but at an annual salary close to pageau's the comp would be 1st/3rd. that's probably more than a bridge deal for pinto will/should cost, so id imagine if some other team gave him that offer sheet OTT would be in a rock/hard place, and if negotiations arent going well id imagine his agent is out there looking for the best offer they can get, so they have some leverage to use if he wants to force his way out.

thats ottawa's big question, can they repair the relationship or is the bridge burned? id imagine they take a few weeks trying to figure that out with his agent before deciding what's next, though they are somewhat on the clock if things are bad enough he could get offer sheeted.
I'd like to offer

sheet Seth Jarvis, but I think CAR can match. I'd still like to force them to do it.

I think they regret their "revenge" Kotkaniemi offer sheet.
