The SC finals are in the rearview and the longest season in NHL history is put to bed.
The NHL Awards are handed out on Thursday night and the draft begins Friday night at the Sphere in Vegas.
The off-season is expected to be a busy one with the first salary cap increase since COVID. The players association opted to leave salaries as is instead of accepting a pay cut during the COVID season(s) and to do that they basically borrowed against future earnings, which suppressed the cap at the current levels.
Anyway, lot of activity could happen between now, the draft and free agency. Several big names rumored to be on the trading block.
Trevor Zegras (MTL and NYR among those named as "interested")
Martin Necas
Patrik Laine
Linus Ullmark (just traded to OTT)
Nikolaj Ehlers
Maybe Mitch Marner and more and then there is buyouts, FA, etc.
Here is the Ullmark trade FWIW:
TRADE ALERT: The #Sens have acquired G Linus Ullmark from @NHLBruins in exchange for (Boston’s original) ’24 first-round draft pick (no. 25 overall), C Mark Kastelic and G Joonas Korpisalo. As part of the transaction, the #Sens will retain 25% of Korpisalo’s remaining salary.… pic.twitter.com/0xRMxi8wZS

I think they regret their "revenge" Kotkaniemi offer sheet.
most offer sheets end up regretted because the only way to win is to overpay. it's really a no win situation, unless the team getting poached is so up against the cap they cant match a fair offer.

sheet Seth Jarvis, but I think CAR can match. I'd still like to force them to do it.

100% agree, overpay or find a poison pill loophole that the current team can't match - which they are trying to legislate out, but still can happen from time to time.

Hearing Ottawa and Shane Pinto have solved the stalemate.
Sounds like 2 x $3.5M+ (not exactly sure of the number)

other than an A+ hockey name, what's the deal with him? odd to be trading such a recent first round pick right?

Similar to how Cutter Gauthier was in PHI, I don't think McGroarty is comfortable with the development plan from the Jets.
My interpretation is he thinks he's NHL ready, I think most outsiders would agree, but the Jets don't seem to think so I guess.
Larry basically doxxed his wife, they probably want to get the fuck out of here at this point.
But now that they mismanaged it the team lost any leverage and will need a Grier or someone to bail them out.

....The anticipated trade to Detroit did not materialize after No. 8 handed in his 15-team no-trade list to GM Chris Drury as due on Monday. Sources now report that the deal as depicted in this space on Saturday with the Blueshirts retaining $2.5 million of Trouba’s annual $8M cap charge the next two years was not on the table. We are told that the suggestion Trouba rejected the deal is not true.....
So Uncle Larry admitted he lied?
Or Blake Wheeler
I know we have salary cap constraints but the deletions and additions to the roster this offseason is meh at best
Plus the Trouba drama probably doesn’t play well in the locker room and chemistry of team.
Not a big fan of Drury to say the least
Living in Texas I don’t get all the newspaper articles about the team and to his offseason
But as a fan living 1600 miles away I am underwhelmed by the moves.
Maybe my Ranger buddies on BBI can fill in the blanks for me to give me hope for next season
I think the Red Wings proposal was very much on the table, but it occurred before Trouba was obligated to submit his 15-team trade list. I think Drury assumed that Trouba would've been happy to go to the Red Wings because they were his childhood team and he grew up in Michigan and his wife went to UMich (not sure where she grew up). And if the Uncle Larry article wasn't printed before July 1st, Trouba may very well not have had Detroit on his no-trade list.
But because it was released early, it spooked Trouba and caught him off-guard and now we're in the position we're in.
So Drury overplayed his hand and was ruthless, Uncle Larry either lied or carelessly wrote this story at an inopportune time, and Trouba is now butthurt.
That's my take, at least.

I think the only good move Drury has made was signing Trocheck
rekt
I've said this forever: I don't think players utilize their leverage enough. There should be more Eli Manning's, Cutter Gauthier, Adam Fox's, Kevin Hayes's, etc. (Notice how my team is usually on the winning side of those, lol)
I agree, I don't think Trouba's done anything wrong, or even unexpected, here. And the fact that it seems so unexpected to me makes it very frustrating that Drury has allowed the situation to develop this way. They know his situation, they surely knew he'd be resistant to a trade. I don't know exactly what the rules are about how quickly a player has to provide his no-trade list, but it's a real failure that the team didn't get that squared away before moving forward with a potential trade that he wouldn't accept. Now the team looks bad and he's taking, at least from some quarters, undeserved grief.
How do you know I'm single?

hard to second guess it either way. I think both players wind up solid NHL players.
2024 Panthers: Lost the Cup, Lost in 2nd Round, Lost in 1st Round
2023 Golden Knights: Outlier due to the expansion, so I'll exclude them
2022 Avalanche: Lost in 2nd Round, Lost in 2nd Round, Lost in 2nd Round
2020 TBL (first of the repeat): Swept in 1st round after 128 points, Lost ECF, No Playoffs
2019 Blues: No Playoffs, Lost in 2nd Round, Lost in WCF
2018 Caps: Lost in 2nd Round, Lost in 2nd Round, Lost in 2nd Round
This is a team that just won the President's Cup, and if anything, should find themselves right back in the mix next year. Arguably our best skater in Fox was hurt in the 1st round which completely hampered his game. We lost to a superior team, no doubt. The organization certainly knows where the problems are, and even though it's much of the same core coming back, I imagine the looks will be different. Minutes scaled back for players, are younger guys being given tougher assignments etc. Drury tried with Trouba, and it's in his right to make utilize his leverage to stay. The sky is falling for this team is a bit much. We still have Igor, and I'll go to war with him net any year.

6 x $5M AAV for Lundell
The bottom 6 desperately needed an infusion of new blood. I wasn't upset of who they brought in but I just didn't like the term on Noesen's contract. Tatar is clearly declining but he should still be a very good addition to the bottom 6 along with Cotter, Noesen, and the return of Nolan Foote. I hope this spells the end of Bastian on the everyday roster. He really had a poor season last year.
While they paid a little too much for Pesce and Dillon I was happy with both additions. I really liked the Kovacevic addition. An unspectacular but solid Dman who is still young.
I have no idea how the D lineups will work out but ideally they will be:
Hughes Pesce
Siegenthaler Hamilton
Dillon Nemec
Kovacevic

HEADED TO THE TARASENK-SHOW!

Adding Robby Fabbri's $4M cap hit brings the Anaheim Ducks above the cap floor.
All 32 teams are now above the cap floor. The Calgary Flames currently hold the most cap space with a projection of $21.7M in cap space.

Alright, let's try this again 🤪... 4 players drafted last week in Vegas have signed their 3-year ELCs today, so far:

Calgary signed Zayne Parekh (9th OV) & Matvei Gridin (28th OV)
Washington signed Terik Parascak (17th OV)

Yeah PJ I was wondering the same thing. I was surprised Beckette Sennecke signed his yesterday. From the sounds of it pre-draft it seemed like he was a late riser due to his OHL playoff performance. Didn't seem like he was near NHL ready but maybe like you said he'll either be sent right back to juniors for next season or have the 6 game NHL tryout to see if he can stick or not burn a year of his ELC.
