The SC finals are in the rearview and the longest season in NHL history is put to bed.
The NHL Awards are handed out on Thursday night and the draft begins Friday night at the Sphere in Vegas.
The off-season is expected to be a busy one with the first salary cap increase since COVID. The players association opted to leave salaries as is instead of accepting a pay cut during the COVID season(s) and to do that they basically borrowed against future earnings, which suppressed the cap at the current levels.
Anyway, lot of activity could happen between now, the draft and free agency. Several big names rumored to be on the trading block.
Trevor Zegras (MTL and NYR among those named as "interested")
Martin Necas
Patrik Laine
Linus Ullmark (just traded to OTT)
Nikolaj Ehlers
Maybe Mitch Marner and more and then there is buyouts, FA, etc.
Here is the Ullmark trade FWIW:
TRADE ALERT: The #Sens have acquired G Linus Ullmark from @NHLBruins in exchange for (Boston’s original) ’24 first-round draft pick (no. 25 overall), C Mark Kastelic and G Joonas Korpisalo. As part of the transaction, the #Sens will retain 25% of Korpisalo’s remaining salary.… pic.twitter.com/0xRMxi8wZS

Another one. I think he's planning to go to Michigan State again next year, so maybe the ELC slides but it can only slide one year if you're 18 when it's signed (not at all if 19). Or who knows, he was the #2 pick, maybe he starts out in CHI.

2. Fox and McAvoy were on the US WJC team who won gold in 2017 (Lindgren too, but he's not the caliber of player to be on this team)

holy shit.
I put a question mark next to Marchand b/c it could be Bedard, Hyman, Reinhart, Stamkos, etc, lol.
I get that both Binnington and Hill have won Stanley Cups and Skinner just lost in game 7 of the finals, but how could those three be the best goalies Canada has?
I assume McDavid doesn't have the required 700 games played yet for the all-time list. And Lemieux over Gretzky? Gretzky in the NHL had 2857 points at a whopping 1.92 PPG, and Lemieux had 1723 points at a whopping 1.88 PPG. Not sure how they adjusted it for era.

🥅 With 2023-24 in the books, here are the top career *era adjusted* point scorers.
CAREER LENGTH matters. Crosby, Malkin, Ovechkin, Gretzky, Sakic maintained over 1,100+ games.
Any big surprises? Panarin, Marner... 👀

[quote] I'm not exactly sure what "era adjusted" means. Regardless, one thing that struck me is I think of Ovi as better offensive player than Crosby, but it's not close really. I guess Ovi is just a better goal scorer.

Yeah good question. I kind of mentally put Wayne and Mario in the same era. Also would have thought Yzerman would belong on here as well?

Yeah wow the Canada goaltending is weak. US is much better there. I guess most of the elite goalies are US and Russian these days.

I haven't dived into the methodology but I love this stuff, lol.
Lemieux had more of the dead puck era than Gretzky, I guess?
And yeah, McDavid is ~50 games short of the 700 number.

It makes sense for a kid to want to see that, but is he good enough to demand/expect it?

going back to UM for the year, but maybe this floated by WIN is an issue. But wasn't this already known? This isn't a WIN the city thing, it's a WIN the franchise thing. He wasn't happy with their development plan.

I don't like to see any player demand or even expect playing time, you want everyone to earn it, but I didn't hear this from McGroarty (or read it as a quote from him) so I take it with a grain of salt.
he's a good player, no doubt about it. I view him as a slightly lesser version of Cutter Gauthier.
The Capitals bought it.

Branden Schneider signing - ( New Window )
Absolutely. He has the tools, he was known in the draft as a defensive first defenseman, but with ability for an offensive game to develop. It hasn't really yet, but he's just turning 23 in September so there's time.
One thing I read is CBJ and MTL talking Kent Johnson.
that would be a good addition for MTL and my guess is D would go the other way. Ideally someone like Barron or Harris (plus).
He hasn't produced at the NHL level but he's been hurt and on some bad teams and is still 21 until October. Would probably slot in to the top 6 in MTL. If Dach can come back healthy would be some nice 2nd line options with Dach, Newhook, Johnson, etc. and add Demidov next year now you're talking.
Probably push Gally and Anderson to 3/4th line.

HABS very quiet….my brother sent me this YouTube video from some guy called legorocks99 showing rumors with my Leafs trading both Marner and or Nylander to the HABS. lol…..you wish…..
I also see McGroarty is being talked about as being a HABS….are you interested in him?
I would trade for Marner, but I already shared my offer with you and you rejected it, lol.
Maybe a shot at USA Hockey Hall of Fame.
He won't get in the Hockey Hall of Fame IMO (not even really close), but there is something to be said for a great career anyway. From the time he was 22 until he retired at 39 when he played a full season he never had fewer than 40 points and averaged .8 ppg over his 18 years for a 66 points per season average.
just a solid, team captain type, you can slot in your top 6 and expect solid two-way play.
Just to stir the pot in the offseason

Interesting.
i know rangers had to do all sorts of stuff to fit kane a couple years ago but that was short term. has anyone ever done it entering a season?

Teams do it. Not sure how common it is but they do it for that exact reason.

I can't lol. the worst thing about seeing things like this is it's all the kids want to do these days and I want them practicing fundamentals. the best thing is as a coach, so many more kids now show up to stick time and open skates when we get older kids to help them work on stuff like this.

Lol, I played with a guy last week who plays in Czechia that can do what Panarin did. But he was great at everything else, too.

Why did you think I was a grown up??
Also, I'm grossed out by the Bowman stuff. He did a bad job those final years too, lol, weird hire. I don't get why Holland left anyway, I'm out of touch these days.
