NFT: NHL - Draft, Free Agency, Awards, Trades - Off-season Thread

pjcas18 : 6/25/2024 8:27 am
The SC finals are in the rearview and the longest season in NHL history is put to bed.

The NHL Awards are handed out on Thursday night and the draft begins Friday night at the Sphere in Vegas.

The off-season is expected to be a busy one with the first salary cap increase since COVID. The players association opted to leave salaries as is instead of accepting a pay cut during the COVID season(s) and to do that they basically borrowed against future earnings, which suppressed the cap at the current levels.

Anyway, lot of activity could happen between now, the draft and free agency. Several big names rumored to be on the trading block.

Trevor Zegras (MTL and NYR among those named as "interested")
Martin Necas
Patrik Laine
Linus Ullmark (just traded to OTT)
Nikolaj Ehlers
Maybe Mitch Marner and more and then there is buyouts, FA, etc.

Here is the Ullmark trade FWIW:

TRADE ALERT: The #Sens have acquired G Linus Ullmark from @NHLBruins in exchange for (Boston’s original) ’24 first-round draft pick (no. 25 overall), C Mark Kastelic and G Joonas Korpisalo. As part of the transaction, the #Sens will retain 25% of Korpisalo’s remaining salary.… pic.twitter.com/0xRMxi8wZS

He may need some development, but I like his compete, I love his shot, and he can be physical.
Yeah like I said with what was left you have to go D at #10

If Silayev is there. Buium would have been interesting too. Buium is probably closer to playing in the NHL, I think I would have gone with him or traded the pick but you can't beef with drafting another potential Zdeno Chara.

Buium has some elite offensive traits but his defensive work is a bit of a liability. Given his profile not upset Devils passed on him and given they have Nemec and Casey with puck handling push up ice ability, never mind Hughes on left side as well. Silayev is a potential unicorn.

You think Buium is a defensive liability? I didn't see that in college or INTL, but everyone sees something different. He does not have prototypical D size, but that metric has been slowly changing. I view Buium as similar to McAvoy, a little better offensively and a little worse defensively but should be similar if he develops.

that said, Silayev has the quality I like most in a defenseman, he's "hard to play against" some times people don't realize how much an advantage being 6'7" provides for a D - especially if he uses a long stick. The reach is insane - made even better by the fact he skates like he's 6' 2" so it's not like he's got long lumbering strides. forwards need to make their moves much sooner against him. It changes a lot.

Yeah true. From what I read Buium isn't necessarily liability on D just his offensive skills are ++. I agree though Silayev if he develops his skills could be exactly what they're missing. Saw some video of him hitting. The Devils haven't had someone like that in over a decade. Maybe since Stevens retired. I'm excited.
One other thing worth mentioning
pjcas18 : 6/29/2024 10:29 am : link
the draft graphics and experience at the Sphere seemed pretty cool. I don't think ESPN did a great job of showing them, but on social media it was much better.

And for the record, as maligned as he was Cole Eiserman gave the best interview of anyone they spoke to.

Maybe liability is too strong of interpretative word. He’s just not a defensive matchup guy. He has admitted he has to improve his decisionmaking and tactics in defensive zone. His offense was so good and so often a weapon used by coaches I don’t think they, and then he really put enough work into preparation and tactical responsibility with what he’s going to face at NHL level. That said he’s going to MIN where if they put him with Faber that’s a dynamite duo with Faber looking like a top D. You let Buium run like a horse up ice and create.

Was surprised Flyers passed on him but they’ve gotten so burned by their D picks going back 15-16 years now, not sure if they just have a different idea on their D corps and developing their timeline differently.
Yeah as you mentioned before the draft
Stu11 : 6/29/2024 10:51 am : link
Eiserman has the potential to be a huge steal at 20. Like scoring in basketball in hockey scoring has become so overrated over the years it's now underrated. You still win by putting the puck in the net and Eiserman did it at a US national team record pace. You put him with a tip playmaking C and he's potentially a legit 40 goal guy.

Silayev
Sammo85 : 6/29/2024 10:54 am : link
on the other hand has some questions if his offense will translate enough to NHL rink and style but a 17 yr old with points in KHL makes you wonder about just how that high ceiling will get. It could be really high - that’s where the Chara and Herman comps have been coming. Coaching and developing players the right way is a huge thing with these 17-21 yr olds. Being coached by the great Igor Larionov and his cohorts excites me and tells me Silayev is just scratching surface. Even if Silayev end up more of a defensive only comp of say Pronger(without the goals) and more of a size/speed matchup passer from back end up ice, that’s still worth a unicorn label in NHL.

Yeah the fact that he may be the best skater drafted last night is insane at 6'7. Most mocks had him going #3 to Anaheim. He slipped a bit in the one or two that had Anaheim going someone else. I think there was one I saw where he got to 10. I guess the Russians are pretty volatile with their draft spots being as you can't really scout them much. By the way I read an old report where Pat Verbeek scouted Sennecke a lot late so it really isn't a shock they took him.

At 5m per year, just not at 8. That salary retention comes in right around where we always said he should be paid! Although if what he was in the playoffs is an indication of the player he’s starting to become then shedding that 5.5 off the cap is worth it, even if you don’t get much in return. Drury is not messing around. But Trouba gets to return to Michigan on an up and coming team. Seems fair, if it does go down.

The Rangers captaincy is becoming a curse though. Would be three straight that got traded

Yeah, that's what I said. I thought Trouba had a ton of value in the $4-6 range. I think someone else argued he was a $1-2m player.

Part of the issue with the captaincy is that they're giving to guys who aren't THAT good.

Callahan and Trouba are/were good, but other teams give it to their elite players.
