The SC finals are in the rearview and the longest season in NHL history is put to bed.
The NHL Awards are handed out on Thursday night and the draft begins Friday night at the Sphere in Vegas.
The off-season is expected to be a busy one with the first salary cap increase since COVID. The players association opted to leave salaries as is instead of accepting a pay cut during the COVID season(s) and to do that they basically borrowed against future earnings, which suppressed the cap at the current levels.
Anyway, lot of activity could happen between now, the draft and free agency. Several big names rumored to be on the trading block.
Trevor Zegras (MTL and NYR among those named as "interested")
Martin Necas
Patrik Laine
Linus Ullmark (just traded to OTT)
Nikolaj Ehlers
Maybe Mitch Marner and more and then there is buyouts, FA, etc.
Here is the Ullmark trade FWIW:
TRADE ALERT: The #Sens have acquired G Linus Ullmark from @NHLBruins in exchange for (Boston’s original) ’24 first-round draft pick (no. 25 overall), C Mark Kastelic and G Joonas Korpisalo. As part of the transaction, the #Sens will retain 25% of Korpisalo’s remaining salary.… pic.twitter.com/0xRMxi8wZS

Sources say there is no change to the NHL rights of the Canadian world junior players charged with sexual assault.
That means Dillon Dubé (CGY), Carter Hart (PHI), Michael McLeod (NJ) and Cal Foote (NJ) will become UFA's if not tendered a qualifying offer by 5 p.m. ET on Sunday.
Yeah no way the Devils tender McLeod. Hart is a very interesting situation.
I'm not leaving - ( New Window )

It was believed it would be an either/or for the Leafs in negotiations with Domi and Bertuzzi. However, with Domi locked down, Toronto continues to negotiate with Tyler Bertuzzi.
Yeah no way the Devils tender McLeod. Hart is a very interesting situation.
Yea easy decision there. I think Hart will be the only one tendered.
PLD went pre-draft as did Mangiapane - both to WAS.
Only one I did not see reported yet was Boqvist.

Buyout waivers today: Adam Boqvist (Columbus), Jack Campbell (Edmonton), Nate Schmidt (Winnipeg)
maybe i missed but did any players move for firsts around draft? feel like there have been a bunch in the last few drafts and maybe this is just a nyi centric thing but the trend had felt like more trades of 1st round picks for established players (romanov, fiala, debrincat, but maybe that was just an outlier in 2022).

Well relatively speaking...and omitting player trades for a moment, so just trades involving a 1st...
last year, 2023 draft there were 0 trades. A function of a strong draft class and weak FA class.
but the 2024 draft (just at the draft) there were 6 trades involving 1st round picks.
in 2022 at the draft there were 6.
Some of them in 2022, like Romanov, Debrincat, Dach, etc involved players.
In 2024, none did, but the trades were still happening.
2023 draft is regarded as strong because it was so top heavy with Bedard, Fantilli, Carlsson, Michkov, but overall there was not that much positional diversity.
2024 did not have a Bedard, but from a depth standpoint might be stronger than 2023 and has a better mix of F and D, so teams did not want to give up those 1sts after scouting players and becoming comfortable with who could be available when they pick.
What did you think of the Devils draft?
@emilymkaplan
A few notes ahead of July 1 in the NHL…
As I said on our draft broadcast, the Jacob Trouba stuff is real. Believe family considerations are huge - and that could be hold up with potential Red Wings trade. We’ll see what transpires over next few hours before his trade protection kicks in, but his future with NYR is in limbo.
Emily Kaplan
@emilymkaplan
All focus for Tampa Bay after clearing cap space is to sign Jake Guentzel. Canes closed in on framework in Vegas, but Guentzel got so close to July, he decided to test elsewhere. Canes will busy regardless. Many in the NHL are focusing on Nashville for Stamkos but I wouldn’t rule out anything.

@emilymkaplan
The Devils making big moves this offseason. Already got Jacob Markstrom and as @EmptyNettersPod
first reported, expectation is Brett Pesce also signs. Don’t think they’re done after that either.

@emilymkaplan
Patrick Kane is still in communication with Red Wings and I think there’s a possibility he goes back. While fit and a chance to win are most important, term and money also have to make sense.
What else is left when deciding on a contract lol

What did you think of the Devils draft?
Jay I loved the Silayev pick. His size and skating and defensive/shut down and hitting upside are a fit on any team. Buium would have been an interesting pick and has tremendous upside as well, but with Luke, Hamilton and even Nemec here for the foreseeable future offensively we're fine there. The rest of the draft was very meh to me. I mean I'm going on all what I read, I wouldn't know these guys if they fell out of the sky into my living room. The 3rd Rd kid from Finland is interesting with his size and upside. The goalie in the 2nd Rd. Doesn't blow me away. Seems like he's most likely a backup. What did you think?
That's not to say the rest is meaningless, of course its meaningful, but the odds of NHL draft success is skewed to the 1st round more than any other sports draft, even baseball.
THW just did a study of every draft from 1963-2023.
Just a draft pick playing at least 1 NHL game drops 20% from Round 1 to Round 2 (88% to 68%).
playing at least 100 games drops over 30% from round 1 to round 2 (from 70% to 39%) basically that's saying a 2nd round pick in the NHL draft has historically a 40% chance of playing at least 100 games. a season is 82). A 2nd round pick has just a 25% chance of playing 300 NHL games which is considered an ok career.
Every later round gets worse.
Which is why I'd give up 2nd round picks or later very easily, but I'd be hesitant to give up 1sts (not groundbreaking, lol, but the discrepancy is wide).

Success Rate of NHL Draft Picks - ( New Window )
I really did like the Yegorov pick. He was arguably the best goalie prospect in the draft and he is already in North America so there is no concern about him possibly not coming over. He is committed to BU in the 25-26 season.
The other picks were meh but I was happy to see them take another goalie later. It is so difficult to project goalies and so many mid to late round picks turn into good starters so the more chances you take the better the odds. Even after trading Schmid the Devils have a nice group of goalie prospects with Daws, Brennan, Malek, Yegorov, and Louhivaara.
@NYP_Brooksie
It's not only the Rangers who swing and miss. Dallas traded a No. 1 for Nils Lundkvist. He played 119 games for Stars over two years, was not qualified, and is eligible to become UFA tomorrow at age 23.

Hearing #Habs have traded D Jonathan Kovacevic.
No word yet on where or return.
Canadiens had a logjam on defense - and no shortage of right-shooting blueliners at that.
That was my initial reaction to the trade. However as I mentioned in another post trade wise Holtz had no value around the league. I agree I'd have loved to see him get a fresh start with Keefe. However it seems like they just gave up on him. The analytics actually like Cotter. He's a very good skater and hitter, dirt cheap at less than a million. Tomorrow will be very interesting. Everyone seems to think Pesce is all but done but the have space to do other things as well. They're still in the market for a top 6 fwd.

Kovacevic is going to #njdevils in exchange for a 2026 4th Round Pick.
I like it. He's still pretty young and he was solid but it's odd that they added another RD. They have Hamilton, Nemec, and likely Pesce there plus DeSimone and Casey in the minors.
Yeah could be Bahl's replacement on the roster. Cheap depth piece.

Among players who did not receive qualifying offers today, making them free agents: Calen Addison, Joey Anderson, Jake Bean, Jesper Boqvist, Erik Brannstrom, Jacob Bryson, Max Comtois, Dillon Dube, Cal Foote, Noah Gregor, Carter Hart, Boris Katchouk, Parker Kelly, Nils Lundkvist, Michael McLeod, Alex Nylander, Mason Shaw, Sam Steel, Jack Studnicka, Filip Zadina
NHL indicated the four players charged in the Team Canada 2018 case would have to be qualified for their teams to keep their rights. None did so.

I’ve been working on the train and will share a few tidbits in this thread heading into a big Monday…
- The Trouba situation has gotten messy. Makes sense for #NYR to move him and use cap space elsewhere, but you can also understand him not wanting to uproot his family.
Vince Z. Mercogliano
@vzmercogliano
- Part of reason he wanted to come to NY in first place was for his wife’s medical career and now they have 6-month-old. Can’t blame him for wanting to stay put, and I don’t think the way he and Goodrow have been handled this offseason is sitting well with some teammates.
Vince Z. Mercogliano
@vzmercogliano
- Fences will need to be mended if Trouba is back, but you have to wonder if all this makes him feel unwanted and he ultimately decides to go. Clock is ticking for #NYR, who need cap certainty ASAP as they weigh UFA decisions, especially with Guentzel & Kane likely off the table.
Vince Z. Mercogliano
@vzmercogliano
- Steven Stamkos is a guy many have their eye on and I do believe #NYR have interest. Bertuzzi, Marchessault and Toffoli also make some sense, otherwise they could go cheaper at RW and put more focus on C and D. Depth at both positions is a legit concern. Lots of intrigue!

The Steven Stamkos Sweepstakes are just that, with six or more teams still very much in the running. Amongst the many suitors still pitching to Stamkos and his agent Don Meehan are NSH, ANA, CAR, DET and NJ but it’s a fluid situation and others are involved as well.
@TSNBobMcKenzie
I would think Jake Guentzel’s deal with TB will be the richest of the day. Word on the street — that is, not necessarily an official number — is that it will be seven years with an AAV of $9 million or thereabouts.
I definitely would not have bent over backwards for the 8th year.
I definitely would not have bent over backwards for the 8th year.
Yeah I guess if you're Florida you're doing everything you can to repeat so you justify it. Of course the Guentzel deal is crazy but then again with Igor wanting 12 mill soon enough I guess it will look like a bargain by then.
@DarrenDreger
Stanley Cup champion goaltender Anthony Stolarz will have a decision to make. Three teams, including Florida and Toronto are working on signing the 6’6 tender.
