The SC finals are in the rearview and the longest season in NHL history is put to bed.
The NHL Awards are handed out on Thursday night and the draft begins Friday night at the Sphere in Vegas.
The off-season is expected to be a busy one with the first salary cap increase since COVID. The players association opted to leave salaries as is instead of accepting a pay cut during the COVID season(s) and to do that they basically borrowed against future earnings, which suppressed the cap at the current levels.
Anyway, lot of activity could happen between now, the draft and free agency. Several big names rumored to be on the trading block.
Trevor Zegras (MTL and NYR among those named as "interested")
Martin Necas
Patrik Laine
Linus Ullmark (just traded to OTT)
Nikolaj Ehlers
Maybe Mitch Marner and more and then there is buyouts, FA, etc.
Here is the Ullmark trade FWIW:
TRADE ALERT: The #Sens have acquired G Linus Ullmark from @NHLBruins in exchange for (Boston’s original) ’24 first-round draft pick (no. 25 overall), C Mark Kastelic and G Joonas Korpisalo. As part of the transaction, the #Sens will retain 25% of Korpisalo’s remaining salary.… pic.twitter.com/0xRMxi8wZS

Sources say #njdevils are closing in on defenseman Brenden Dillon: sounds like 3 years just around/under $4 million per year.
Outside of Dougie the Devils have completely remade their D from a team 2 years ago that had well north of 100 points.
@DarrenDreger
Boston lands both Lindholm and Zadorov.
I have to think he's working on a trade. Kakko?
@SiriusXMNHL
@NJDevils sign Brett Pesce to a six-year contract worth an AAV of $5.5 million
The Rangers have been run so poorly for so many years now.
@PierreVLeBrun
As reported earlier but now a done deal, Steven Stamkos, Jonathan Marchessault and Brady Skjei all agree to terms in Nashville.
Stamkos, 4 years x $8 M AAV
Marchessault, 5 years x $5.5 M AAV
Brady Skjei, 7 years x $7 M AAV
The Rangers have been run so poorly for so many years now.
SO SO SO SO SO SO BAD- absolutely cannot believe JD/Gorton were on such short leashes for this absolute jackass.
"But he is very tight lipped" yea no shit because he gets bullied by every other GM in the league. Obviously, he isn't going to advertise that.
Maybe they just think Rempe as a full time member of the lineup does it (fans do, lol).
@FriedgeHNIC
Elias Lindholm 7 x $7.75 Boston
1 or 2C.
@FriedgeHNIC
Arvidsson to Edmonton
@TSNBobMcKenzie
$4 million AAV.
Maybe they just think Rempe as a full time member of the lineup does it (fans do, lol).
I would argue the exact opposite about the FL series. It was NOT a close series. Both Rangers wins they got ABSOLUTELY BULLIED for at least 75% of the game. One of the games was an insanely lucky tip in by Wennberg. That series should have been a sweep if not for a superhuman Igor performance.

Monahan is deliberating now as Bob reports. It’s expected this deal will come in around 5 years and just north of $25 million. CBJ or WPG?
The Rangers have been run so poorly for so many years now.
Which of these completed deals would you say Drury should have beaten? We're like 45 minutes into free agency. Give it a little time?

But hey, who needs a forward who can actually play defense?

The well has dried up. There are no more decent options. I know PJ mentioned Drouin, but he was playing with fucking MacKinnon and has been a complete bust.
I would've definitely done Arvidsson for 2 x 4M.
I would have really liked Matt Roy, I will say that.
Shedding Goodrow and eventually Trouba is not nothing and tells me Drury isn't just sitting on his hands looking to run it back.

Yeah, but for whom? For what? Shedding the salary in order to get whom?
Trades are an option, either now or in-season where we can weaponize cap space even more. Let's see
Try to get someone at the deadline to improve the defense and RW. The team was 2 games from the SCF, and Florida is getting a little worse. Rangers have some risk, too, but they'll be up there again.

The Blue Jackets have agreed to terms with Sean Monahan, five years x $5.5 M AAV per season.
Reunion with Johnny Gaudreau

6 years $5 mill per for Zadorov in Boston.

And NJ and Washington have gotten better.
Fuck Trouba. I know it's his prerogative under the contract, but he's hurt and disappointed that he was going to be traded? Boo fucking hoo. Maybe if he earned that 8M per...or even close to it, we wouldn't be so gung-ho to get rid of him.
@TheFourthPeriod
1-year deal for Mantha in Calgary
@nhlupdate
#Canucks sign Jake DeBrusk to a seven-year deal at a 5.5M AAV
@DarrenDreger
Kevin Stenlund. Two years at $2 mil per with Utah.
@Canucks
Vancouver Canucks General Manager Patrik Allvin announced today that the club has agreed to terms with forward Danton Heinen on a 2-year contract with a $2.25M AAV.
Shedding Goodrow and eventually Trouba is not nothing and tells me Drury isn't just sitting on his hands looking to run it back.
He may not be sitting on his hands but doesn't seem like he is a guy who can get anything done.
What has he done that is positive? Made some deadline rentals?

Not trading Trouba meant they were probably pretty tight today.

Washington remains irrelevant. I think the Devils are going to be good again, though.

Teuvo was the only signing so far that left me wishing the Rangers had been able to get that done.

Capitalize on the signings and draft of Gorton
@StapeAthletic
Not sure if it's done but hearing Jonathan Drouin is headed back to COL. #NYR had strong interest
Trocheck looks like an absolute bargain when guys like Debrusk are getting the same AAV as him and Lindholm is getting 2M more. So there's that

I am really struggling to find anything good! Is the best thing he has done getting Chytil to accept a contract without a NMC?

Yea good point... Vinny was a huge win, love Vinny.
Hopefully not the back of his mind. They should not give out any contracts that hurt their ability to bring those guys back.
Just an FYI: the Rangers have one first round pick in 2025 and don't pick again until the fifth round, where they have two picks....so yeah.
Elliotte Friedman
@FriedgeHNIC
Matt Grzelcyk 1 x $2.75M Pittsburgh
@FriedgeHNIC
Not sure yet how this is going to look contract-wise, but hearing Sean Walker to Carolina
@TheFourthPeriod
As mentioned on @NHLNetwork
a few seconds ago, despite some back-and-forth, Joel Edmundson has indeed agreed to a deal with the LA Kings.
