NFT: NHL - Draft, Free Agency, Awards, Trades - Off-season Thread

pjcas18 : 6/25/2024 8:27 am
The SC finals are in the rearview and the longest season in NHL history is put to bed.

The NHL Awards are handed out on Thursday night and the draft begins Friday night at the Sphere in Vegas.

The off-season is expected to be a busy one with the first salary cap increase since COVID. The players association opted to leave salaries as is instead of accepting a pay cut during the COVID season(s) and to do that they basically borrowed against future earnings, which suppressed the cap at the current levels.

Anyway, lot of activity could happen between now, the draft and free agency. Several big names rumored to be on the trading block.

Trevor Zegras (MTL and NYR among those named as "interested")
Martin Necas
Patrik Laine
Linus Ullmark (just traded to OTT)
Nikolaj Ehlers
Maybe Mitch Marner and more and then there is buyouts, FA, etc.

Here is the Ullmark trade FWIW:

TRADE ALERT: The #Sens have acquired G Linus Ullmark from @NHLBruins in exchange for (Boston’s original) ’24 first-round draft pick (no. 25 overall), C Mark Kastelic and G Joonas Korpisalo. As part of the transaction, the #Sens will retain 25% of Korpisalo’s remaining salary.… pic.twitter.com/0xRMxi8wZS

Athletic winners and losers from the draft

The scale:
Quote:
• Winners: Teams I believe won out over their competition with consistent, sleuth, home-run-level selections relative to where they picked.
• Overtime winners: Teams I believe did well with where they were slotted, even if they might not have picked the exact player(s) I would have.
• Overtime losers: Teams I believe could have done better but might, in time, be happy with their pick(s) regardless.
• Losers: Teams I believe will regret taking the player(s) they chose.

Sources say #njdevils are closing in on defenseman Brenden Dillon: sounds like 3 years just around/under $4 million per year.

Outside of Dougie the Devils have completely remade their D from a team 2 years ago that had well north of 100 points.

Brady Skjei, 7 years x $7 M AAV

SO SO SO SO SO SO BAD- absolutely cannot believe JD/Gorton were on such short leashes for this absolute jackass.

"But he is very tight lipped" yea no shit because he gets bullied by every other GM in the league. Obviously, he isn't going to advertise that.
The Rangers

I would argue the exact opposite about the FL series. It was NOT a close series. Both Rangers wins they got ABSOLUTELY BULLIED for at least 75% of the game. One of the games was an insanely lucky tip in by Wennberg. That series should have been a sweep if not for a superhuman Igor performance.

The well has dried up. There are no more decent options. I know PJ mentioned Drouin, but he was playing with fucking MacKinnon and has been a complete bust.

I would've definitely done Arvidsson for 2 x 4M.
I'm not terribly disappointed
bigbluehoya : 7/1/2024 12:21 pm : link
by the quiet NYR start. I think their situation is pretty complicated and I really don't mind a measured approach.

I would have really liked Matt Roy, I will say that.

Teuvo was the only signing so far that left me wishing the Rangers had been able to get that done.

Shedding Goodrow and eventually Trouba is not nothing and tells me Drury isn't just sitting on his hands looking to run it back.

Yeah, but for whom? For what? Shedding the salary in order to get whom?

Kyle in NY : 7/1/2024 12:24 pm : link
Arvidsson is a reasonable shoutout. That's a cheap deal and he had Laviolette ties. Otherwise I'm not seeing much that has me envious besides him and Teuvo.

Trades are an option, either now or in-season where we can weaponize cap space even more. Let's see
......
BrettNYG10 : 7/1/2024 12:24 pm : link
Not trading Trouba meant they were probably pretty tight today.

Try to get someone at the deadline to improve the defense and RW. The team was 2 games from the SCF, and Florida is getting a little worse. Rangers have some risk, too, but they'll be up there again.

IMO. Big dude, decent defensively, but NYR fans complain about 2 years left on Trouba at $8M - I'd take that all day before this deal with Zadorov. Should be a trade market for Trouba after teams see these numbers.
