The SC finals are in the rearview and the longest season in NHL history is put to bed.
The NHL Awards are handed out on Thursday night and the draft begins Friday night at the Sphere in Vegas.
The off-season is expected to be a busy one with the first salary cap increase since COVID. The players association opted to leave salaries as is instead of accepting a pay cut during the COVID season(s) and to do that they basically borrowed against future earnings, which suppressed the cap at the current levels.
Anyway, lot of activity could happen between now, the draft and free agency. Several big names rumored to be on the trading block.
Trevor Zegras (MTL and NYR among those named as "interested")
Martin Necas
Patrik Laine
Linus Ullmark (just traded to OTT)
Nikolaj Ehlers
Maybe Mitch Marner and more and then there is buyouts, FA, etc.
Here is the Ullmark trade FWIW:
TRADE ALERT: The #Sens have acquired G Linus Ullmark from @NHLBruins in exchange for (Boston’s original) ’24 first-round draft pick (no. 25 overall), C Mark Kastelic and G Joonas Korpisalo. As part of the transaction, the #Sens will retain 25% of Korpisalo’s remaining salary.… pic.twitter.com/0xRMxi8wZS

I remember that draft like it was yesterday.
I wanted MTL to take Tkachuk and thought they made a mistake if not Tkachuk by not taking Zadina.
Turned out they made a mistake, but Zadina would have been worse, lol.
Ugh, this move is my least favorite of the offseason so far.
Oh and Tarasenko

hey Jay lets get Boyle out of retirement and bring back Wood to get the 2017-18 band back together again!

He actually was a nice back 6 contributor for Carolina this year.

Multiple teams are in the mix for Jeff Skinner, including the Oilers as I previously mentioned. No deal/decision yet.
Your team is actually better here, and you haven't done a damned thing to screw up the intermediate term cap.
Stefen Rosner
@stefen_rosner
Rumblings about Anthony Duclair and #Isles.
Nothing to confirm yet.

Listen Trouba isn't an $8M a year guy but if you think this team gets better by removing him and adding Zac Jones.... you are out of your mind. This team lost a ton of grit (assuming Trouba goes) and a little bit of skill. Usually you lose one or the other, not both! I don't see how any could possibly think NYR got better?
Loss-
Wennberg
Goodrow
Gustaffson
Roslovic (meh)
Gain-
Cap space
After NYR sign Igor, Laf, Miller after next year they are going to be in perpetual cap hell for the next 6-8 years.
He was a goner. We're loaded with depth on D now
Happy now!? :)

Sounds like Pittsburgh is trading Reilly Smith to the Rangers
Happy now!? :)
lol, here comes the Stanley Cup now. Yikes that really was our big move. I am scared.

Yes he was but there is a lot of money tied into the bottom 6 between him and Palat.
Darren Dreger
@DarrenDreger
Confirming Chandler Stephenson agrees to a 7 year deal with Seattle. $6.25 aav.

D Brendan Smith signs a 1 year deal with Dallas. Thank god he's not returning to NJ.

I know but I am just thrilled that there is officially no way that he is returning.

He's a good player, one year left on his deal so it's not a huge commitment, I'm not really sure what you're looking for
He's a top 6 forward on most teams. Not sure where NYR will play him.
3.5M AAV
@HockeyStatMiner
If there's no salary retained, Smith is pretty much all #NYR's spending money (for the moment). Any ballpark figures for Lindgren & Schneider and it'll take them just under $88m.
Obviously the Trouba situation and/or other unrelated trades can/will change that.
@FriedgeHNIC
Pittsburgh is retaining 25 per cent of Reilly Smith's salary
Who cares if he's declining, he's in the last year of his deal, and the 2nd round pick I believe is from 2027. They are a better team with him than without him (assuming no other roster changes).
The Rangers basically used Goodrow's money on Smith. - Huge upgrade and I don't hate Goodrow.

4 years for Duclair to NYI

Good deal. Brings needed speed and finish, played for Roy in junior.
Duke for 3.5 and Reilly for 1.5 are good adds, especially given the doomed overpays we are seeing today (and every July 1)
@NHLFlyers
OFFICIAL: THE WAIT IS OVER!
We have signed forward Matvei Michkov to a three-year entry-level contract. #LetsGoFlyers
@EdmontonOilers
COREY'S CONFIRMED ☑️
The #Oilers have re-signed forward Corey Perry to a one-year, $1.4 million contract.
#LetsGoOilers
@TheHockeyWriter
The #LeafsForever have signed Oliver Ekman-Larsson to a four-year, $3.5 million deal.
@CompleteHkyNews
The Dallas Stars have re-signed defenceman Nils Lundkvist to a one-year, $1.25 million contract.

I don't like the Smith trade. I would have waited until the deadline rather than trade for an over 30, probably declining player.

Because of alternative uses at the deadline for that cap space and draft pick.
@mndamico
The Montreal Canadiens announced they've signed Juraj Slafkovsky to an 8-year deal.
Carries a $7.6M AAV and only kicks in as of 2025-2026.

Why risk it? So much can change between now and the deadline it seems very risky to eschew adding a player who can help you all season in hopes you get to the deadline in a condition to add what you need.
Hopefully Drury learns a lesson from this past deadline.
The Rangers should have used LTIR to their advantage to add at the deadline. I wonder if ownership prevented him.

You risk it because you can get a better player with more confidence in how the player is going to perform over the next couple months. Smith is at the age where guys fall off a cliff.
I would have personally gunned harder for Chychrun. Lindgren and a pick wouldn't have gotten it done?
And I think Reilly helps them get to the deadline more than any roster player does. Drury has been pretty mid as a GM, but this is not a move I'd be critical of him about.
I like Chychrun, don't know if a deal was there, but also don't think this move completely negated that potential one - because as you say would have required a roster player going the other way - such as Lindgren.
if pinto is really available something around jgp + 1 or 2 RFAs + first for pinto would be a nice cherry on top. same structure could possibly do ehlers too but that would be tighter against cap.

Seems relevant to mention today, but I read teams in cities with high taxes (like NY) were going to start leveraging deferred comp more than they previously have been to bridge the gap in real $$$ between cities in NY (for example) and places like NSH or CAR (for example).
It had always been allowed per CBA and I don't believe it changes the cap hit, but it can help offset (and then some) tax hits of metropolitan cities.

would have really liked to get marchessault but the price/age difference may not have been worth it. 5.5m in nash is at least 6m in ny, 5 years older.

the other thing that could work is day 1 signing bonus $. believe that would tax'ed at whatever the current residency is, but that only works if the player is coming from a lower tax place to start with.

NHL announces that (as of July 10), Joel Quenneville, Stan Bowman and Al MacIsaac are eligible to seek employment in the NHL.
They had been suspended because of their “inadequate response upon being informed in 2010 of allegations that Blackhawks’ Player, Kyle Beach, had been assaulted by the Club’s video coach.”

keep it private. We're always looking to move the team forward and be the best team we can possibly be. I'm not going to go through player by player, who is going to be here, who is not going to be here. We're just trying to do the best we can in the offseason... (2/3)
