NFT: Recommendations/info re: trip to Iceland

Beezer : 7/3/2024 2:46 pm
Hi all ... planning to read and research a lot in the coming weeks for a trip to Iceland the first week of August. I don't keep a bucket list, but if I did, this trip would be toward the top.

My wife and I are planning minimally. No tourist events, no tours to speak of. Renting a car and we plan to drive, see, meet, and where we lay our heads each night, that's where we sleep. My wife is a combat veteran so she's low-maintenance and all about the adventure.

Any good tips, places to see or avoid, foods, traps, etc. that any of you good BBI folks might like to share, I'd appreciate reading.

Thanks!

if you go check the MET office on weather and on going events. If you are planning on going to the Blue Lagoon, search elsewhere. It is closed due to the on going eruption in that area. The power station near by is very much in jepordy.

Iceland has a number of other spas, that are just as nice, if not better, due to the lack of crowds. Gettingout of the city and just drive the ring road. Lots of nice stuff to see just off the road.

There is uslaly a spa or pool in each town were the locals go and congrigate. Dont worry about getting euros, debit cards are used everywhere.

but it is worth repeating: Drive to Vik and spend a night or two there. It is awesome and there's tons of great sights along the way.
Just returned from Iceland yesterday

You're in for a real treat. What a great place to visit. I posted the thread a couple weeks ago asking for advice (someone re-posted above) and got some great suggestions.

I know the Blue Lagoon is touristy, but I recommend checking it out for at least a couple hours. Best to do right after you arrive in Iceland as it's closer to airport than going into Reykjavik and working your way back to Blue Lagoon. I recommend not only for the lagoon itself and the amazing water, but with all the volcanic activity going on, it's amazing to see on the drive to Blue Lagoon.

If you're staying Reykjavik, there's a great bakery called Deig for Bagels, Donuts, etc in the morning. It's inside the Exeter Hotel which is right across the street from the harbor. Highly recommend.

We ate dinner the first night at Reykjavik Fish Restaurant in the same area. After dinner we walked the downtown area and it was awesome! The Hallgrímskirkja church is a neat place to checkout and take some pictures. There's a great little hot dog stand for Icelandic Hot Dogs right off the church steps. I was skeptical at first, but the hot dogs were fire!

We took a RIB (boat tour) to go see Puffins the next morning. It's only an hour tour but well worth it. Not many places in the world to see Puffins.

Definitely do the drive to Vik. We weren't able to do that this trip, but heard great things from a lot people. We also visited Grundarfjordur, Isafjorour, and Akureyri. All very unique, awesome waterfalls and beautiful places if you like the outdoors (hiking, fishing, waterfalls, fjords, mountains).

It sounds like you and your wife are up for anything, so I'm sure you'll have a great time. If you have any specific questions, let me know while things are fresh in my mind.

Enjoy!
All good ideas already mentioned.....

Make sure you also make your way to the Glacier Lagoon and Diamond Beach. They're past Vik, on the southern route, if you go there. Make sure you go to the Black Sand Beach in Vik, as well. As mentioned, Iceland loves their Hot Dogs. Go to the Hot Dog stand near the church...fabulous Hot Dogs! And I second the Blue Lagoon experience.....absolutely awesome and relaxing. So much to see and do...it's an awesome place. Enjoy!

Great stuff. I’ve read the other thread, all really helpful, too.

I hate that the one place we must go is the name of an Eagle. Dammit!
This might sound like a weird question

But when you visit the blue Lagoon, should you have swim trunks with you? Is it one of those things where you can get them there or how does it all work? I’m going to try to travel as slightly as possible, we both are. Just trying to get some specific tidbit going.
Yes pack your swim suit

with you for Blue Lagoon. We had ours in backpack and went right from airplane to Blue Lagoon after we landed. They will store all your luggage for you and also have lockers in the locker room that will fit a backpack and personal belongings. Everything else (towels, robes, shower) is provided to you at the Blue Lagoon.

Also depending what package/ticket you get, a couple drinks and masks are also included. If you do decide to go, try to go as early in the morning as possible. It gets more and more crowded throughout the day.

We were a party of 5 and everyone had a blast.
