They didn't guarantee $976K of his contract in April so they could cut him in September. Other than Drew Lock, that's 3X more in guaranteed money than any other free agent signed to a one-year deal. Clearly they viewed him as likely to make the 53-man roster at the time of the signing, but maybe the addition of Mausau makes it less of a certainty.

Not sleeping on him. But it was a bit surprising that Coughlin was playing second-team ILB at the mini-camp. Adams and Coughlin are probably in direct competition with each other.
really aren't any DEs in Wink's defense or Bowens' defense.... only edge and DTs.
Semantics aside, the mention of Ryder Anderson and Basham as contenders for the passrushing role next to Dex on Hard Knocks gives me the impression they see Basham as more DL than LB in Bowen's defense.

As a starting 3-technique DT? I doubt it. But maybe a situational rusher from the inside. In other words, the same thing they did with Ward.

Salaries are exactly the same, but it's $967.5K vs $367.5K when it comes to guaranteed money. Coughlin was signed in March, Adams in April, which makes it seem like the message to Adams and his agent was that he is more likely to make the team than Coughlin.
p.s.--Coughlin ahead of Adams on depth chart for minicamp....
Could've simply been a reflection of Adams being a late addition who hadn't been participating in the offseason program for as long as Coughlin.
It's brand new defense. They both started at the same point.
Coughlin was signed March 11, Adams signed April 12, so it gave Coughlin nearly twice as long in the new defense prior to minicamp. A month head start is nothing to sneeze at when you're only two or three months in. And for all we know, the real competition between the two comes more from their value on special teams than as reserves on defense. Bottomline, why would the Giants guarantee that much of Adams's salary if they weren't confident he'd make the final roster?
p.s.--I was mistaken, Isaiah Simmons got more guaranteed money on his one year deal than Adams (so it wasn't just Drew Lock).

Milton, this debate is getting silly at this point. Both are competing for a roster spot. The Giants have signed plenty of players in recent years who were given guaranteed money only to see them cut a few months later.
The offseason program begain April 15. Both started from square one.
Before mini-camp, my guess was Adams was ahead of Coughlin on the depth chart. But he wasn't at the mini-camp. That's notable.
they talked about Boogie in hard knocks, Bowen mentioned him
Obviously Beavers is a draft pick. Simmons is a factor. Boogie might fit this scheme better and was traded by schoen and has ties to his drafting in Buffalo.

Of course they have, but never (that I can think of) when nearly 90% of the contract was guaranteed money. If it's true that Adams is in competition with Coughlin for the same roster spot, why give him 3X the guaranteed money if you don't view him as winning the competition?
Obviously Beavers is a draft pick. Simmons is a factor. Boogie might fit this scheme better and was traded by schoen and has ties to his drafting in Buffalo.
Probably every defensive player on the roster was mentioned in that meeting.
KT, Burns, Okereke, McFadden, Muasau, Simmons, and assuming he can stay healthy, Ojulari, are the only certainties. All the rest are camp bodies, although Coughlin has an edge IMO because of his ST abilities. I think the Giants are likely to try and find another LB after final cuts, either a waiver wire claim or a veteran signing.

In terms of overall impact, I didn’t think he had a great year. Just OK. Example - 50 tackles from an OLB in 17 games playing 87% of snaps?
That said he was playing in Winks crazy scheme. To me he’s a pure 43 DE and he will be used much more traditionally in Bowens scheme. I’m hopeful that can unlock the type of top 5 ability I believe he has.
KT, Burns, Okereke, McFadden, Muasau, Simmons, and assuming he can stay healthy, Ojulari, are the only certainties.
Muasau is not a certainty. Sixth round picks get cut all the time. And if so, he'll likely be safe on the practice squad.
I doubt he gets cut. They just drafted him and seemed pretty happy to get him in the sixth round. And as I said, everybody besides the others I named is a journeyman.

I believe my eyes and the stats Eric mentions for Basham. I see him as a Jihad Ward type. I’m hoping they can do better.
Other than the revamped offensive line with a new OL coach, I think the change in the LB play with the addition of Burns and having the edge guys work with Patterson are among the most anticipated storylines for 2024 (other than of course how Daniel Jones performs).

That's fine but using tackles as the stat that you singled out is horrendous analytics in today's NFL...especially at that position.
If you want to say pressure rate/win rate, fine..he was up and down..but using a total tackle number tells you nothing.

That's what he's been to date.
But the thing is, he was very highly touted out of a college as a DE/LB, depending on system, who can get to the QB.
He's played less than 1,000 snaps in his 3 years in the league, under 3 different DCs.
He's a wild card.

I did not know anybody that. Ok, I’ll remain hopeful.
Great review and this group is the key to the success of the defense.
I like contract years.....i think Ojulari will step up.
We discuss Burns influence on Thibs, but the key to both of their success is a collapse pocket...Sexy Dexy is as important if not more.
Paterson coaching is best in the business.....how was he not coaching the edges last year.....wow....how stupid Wink!
Beavers not making team seems odd to me, unless his injuries has limited him.....its a good sign when good players get cut....those are the first signs of an improving roster.

I was big advocate for Beavers, but we have to be honest. He was a PS player last year. The ACL may have effectively ended his career here before it even started.
When all is said and done - this might be the position grouping with the most talent and the group I feel the most confident in (offense or defense) going into the season.
This will be my favorite position group in 2024. The addition of Burns was huge. I was mortified when they passed on Josh Allen in 2019, so getting Burns has finally righted that ship. With Okereke, Thibs, the McFadden/Simmons platoon and Ojulari off the bench, I think this may be the best linebacker group in East Rutherford since the glory days of the Crunch Bunch!
Understatement of the century.

What position group Boogie works with will be interesting to follow.

We're arguing over the 7th or 8th LB.
I merely pointed out that Coughlin, who only played two defensive snaps last year, was the second string ILB at mini-camp.
That suggests right now that he MAY be ahead of Adams.
Why you are making a fuss over this is beyond me.
