Nick and Dan break down the first episode of HBO's Hard Knocks, featuring the Giants' front office. We received an in-depth look at the free agent process, which was led by Director of Pro Scouting Chris Rossetti. Insight about Daniel Jones, Saquon Barkley, and other Giants were divulged throughout the episode, and the two discuss their thoughts.

because I was away last week and just watched it last night. What struck me was how much the Giants thought Barkley had left in the tank and that they misjudged the market on what someone would pay him. THey thought the market was going to be oversaturated and Schoen looked like he misjudged the market. With that said, I think he still would not have paid the 12 million as he said we had much more ways to spend the money. But, I was surprised in how much they thought of Barkley. In other words, if I thought they evaluated him the way they were talking about him, I would have figured they would have paid him.
I think if you watched the above video - you would realize

that you completely misread this

a) the FO identified that Barkley would be more valuable to a team with a good front line

b) that the Eagles were probably a team that would value him and pay him closer to what he wanted

c) that the Giants needed to speed the money on the Oline instead of Barkley

d) that the Giants FO felt that the numbers and studies on running backs indicate that their value goes down based on age and milage and

e) that it didn't make sense to pay Daniel Jones to hand the ball off to a pricey running back -- they need more bang for the buck

I think you are misreading what I am saying. First, they did not think the RB market would be robust, but in their deliberations they did allow that a team with a better OL might pay Barkley. They also used those teams to say that Barkley's stats with the Giant might not be indicative of his true potential when measured against the Giants OL. They also did mention the mileage on Barkley and compared him to Jacobs, but again I think they were doing that as a risk analysis as opposed to what they currently thought of Barkley, which was higher opinion than I thought it would be going into the show.

I do think Schoen misread the RB market and did not expect a team to bid that high on Barkley. Obviously, he thought it was a possibility as you mentioned he mentioned it in the show, but the sense I got was that they did not think in the end somebody was paying 12 million for a RB even if they accounted for the fact that somebody might do so because they are in a different situation.
Seems like HBO loves for
