NFT: ⚾Mets vs Nats Series: Games 1 to 3 ⚾Gm 1 - 7:10 pm ET start⚾

Optimus-NY : 7/9/2024 4:41 pm
Here we go again with another series thread. The Mets are back home for the first game of what will be a 6-game homestand before the four-day All-Star Break (July 15th to the 18th). The Mets finished their road trip to D.C. & the ‘Burgh with a record of 4-4 & are going to try and make hey these next 6 home games against the Nats and Rockies. The Mets are 5-2 against the Nationals so far this season, with 6 more games to go against them overall (including this 3-game series). All 6 of the remaining games against the Nats will be at Citi Field (the first 7 were played in D.C.). The last series with the Nats will take place during the stretch-run in mid-September. A series win here is much needed. Enjoy 😊!

50 career high leverage innings with a 3.29 fip. 90 medium leverage. the velocity probably caps the ceiling but he is an experienced late game reliever and not ancient like diekman/otto. also more consistent with walks.

White Sox, A's, Angels, Rockies, Marlins. Angels and Marlins seem to be the best realistic trading options, as I don't consider Mason Miller a realistic option.

Priority bullpen wise would be Tanner Scott. Lefty. 1.42 ERA this year, 2.31 ERA last year. FA after this year. Would be instant set-up man. Would a Parada/Vasil package be enough?

Other guys I'd look at would with the Angels would be Carlos Estevez (pending FA), and old friend Hunter Strickland who is having a resurgence this year and could likely be had for a Maton type return (though has 42 appearances already)

Ladies and gentleman, your active career post-season era leader amongst RP's (20 innings or more) Phil Maton (0.83). Nearly 1/2 a runner better than #2 (Tyler Matzek) #Mets

i think you are in the ballpark. id try to get 2 of the Marlins relievers. Scott plus 1 of puk or bender.
for a power hitter vientos is a really solid pure hitter

with the hopeful sweep of the Nats
KDavies : 7/11/2024 3:54 pm : link
putting them closer to out of contention, Floro is a nice option. FA after this year. Scott and another Marlins reliever (that Eric mentioned) for a package of say Parada, Vasil, and Ramirez, and a trade for Floro would be a nice influx of relievers.
Pull this turkey.
Optimus-NY : 7/11/2024 3:55 pm : link
Enough already.
looking at miami i actually think i'd argue for Puk + Bender > Scott
Eric on Li : 7/11/2024 3:55 pm : link
Scott has walked 5 per 9 this year, 2nd percentile walk rate. pretty much only the blemish on his statcast but thats a big blemish. his xera is really good, but it's also still twice as high as his actual so he is due for some regression.

this numbers include 2023 puk has been good and walks fewer guys. he doesnt have scotts velo but he's a power lefty who throws 6 different pitches. bender is in his first year back from TJS and after a bad march has been really good. both 29 years old with multiple years of control.

all 3 generate a lot of groundballs too. ill take any 2 of them.

The Blue Jays placed Kevin Kiermaier on revocable waivers, The Post has learned.

Toronto almost certainly was seeing if a team would put in a claim on the veteran center fielder and remove about $4.5 million left on the $10.5 million, one-year contract signed last offseason.

It is highly doubtful any team would assume that kind of financial responsibility for a player struggling as much as Kiermaier.

it was a 7 run lead. 1 more inning for nunez today is an inning he wont pitch in any closer game before the break.
alright as long as they dont get swpt by COL they're above .500 at asb
Eric on Li : 7/11/2024 4:03 pm : link
easy to imagine where they'd be with just a half competent BP in the last 6 weeks or so but there's still time to continue fixing that.

if you can grab 2 more RP plus Senga back you can go from a wild card contender to a real threat real quick.
yeah, I'd take any of the 3, Eric
KDavies : 7/11/2024 4:04 pm : link
I'm operating on the premise that Marlins are less inclined in trading controlled players within the division. Though, maybe they are so far away it doesn't matter.

i would guess for relievers they would just take whatever the best prospect is they can get. id imagine they are team that would prefer prospects closer to big leagues vs farther out, but i could be wrong about that. if so rolling the dice on someone like parada could be interesting for them.

relievers are so tough to value though, i never would have thought mets could get maton for free.
Skenes - took him out after 7 innings and no hits with 99 pitches
CooperDash : 7/11/2024 4:11 pm : link
Has to be tough for him to be yanked. And the Pitt immediately gives up two hits to start the inning.
Rockies are truly awful
Metnut : 7/11/2024 4:11 pm : link
Need at least 2/3 but we should be greedy and hoping for the sweep at home.

All-star snub might've worked out in the Mets favor. Give Lindor and Nimmo some extra motivation and some extra time off.

Wouldn't mind a mild RF upgrade also to further lengthen the lineup. Not sure if a Pham reunion would be doable given his comments from last year, but he'd be a nice add and probably super cheap. Any RPs that ChiSox could package?

Agreed on ALL counts. Gotta win this upcoming series against the Rockettes. They're terrible on the road. Time to beat up on some scrubs. Pham would be a nice get. I don't care what anyone in that clubhouse has to say. The man can play and was a producer last season. He'd fit in nicely again here. Stewart and Gamel don't belong on the ML roster anymore. Pham's not a lefty, but he'd be a fine addition.
I think it was the right decision. With a young pitcher like Skenes,

99 pitches for a rookie. I would have done the same. If he was through 8? I would bring him out for the 9th, but he had 2 more innings to pitch. Not happening.

would he be worth a look in the bullpen, or is he a complete lost cause at this point?

Top prospect with TB (was in the top 15 at one point), but didn't pitch for 3 years due to injury ('18-'20).

2023 had a 4.05 ERA with SD in 36 games and a poor 4 game stretch with the White Sox. 2.70 ERA in 2 MLB games this year.
