NFT: ⚾Mets vs Nats Series: Games 1 to 3 ⚾Gm 1 - 7:10 pm ET start⚾

Optimus-NY : 7/9/2024 4:41 pm
Here we go again with another series thread. The Mets are back home for the first game of what will be a 6-game homestand before the four-day All-Star Break (July 15th to the 18th). The Mets finished their road trip to D.C. & the ‘Burgh with a record of 4-4 & are going to try and make hey these next 6 home games against the Nats and Rockies. The Mets are 5-2 against the Nationals so far this season, with 6 more games to go against them overall (including this 3-game series). All 6 of the remaining games against the Nats will be at Citi Field (the first 7 were played in D.C.). The last series with the Nats will take place during the stretch-run in mid-September. A series win here is much needed. Enjoy 😊!

lucchesi dfa'd. maton was good last year, less good this year but not terrible. still preventing hard contact and generating ground balls. walk rate is up though.

Stearns says Mets have been talking to the Rays, and number of teams about bullpen help for weeks now.

They targeted Maton in the offseason. He has a 1.08 ERA in his last 8.1 innings and Stearns is confident the adjustments Maton has made recently can help the Mets’ bullpen

With 21 days left until the MLB trade deadline, David Stearns and the New York Mets front office made their first move of trade season. The team has announced that they have traded for right-handed pitcher Phil Maton from the Tampa Bay Rays in exchange for a player to be named later or cash considerations. To make room for Maton, Joey Lucchesi has been designated for assignment.

Makes no sense to me. No shocked at this organization's odd decision-making.

P.S. Sorry for posting this on the game thread. Just venting since I liked Joey Fuego and will miss the churve. This prolly belongs on the minors thread.

nimmo's homer had a launch angle of 41 which i think is an extremely rare homer. was out in 14/30 ball parks so it wasnt so much of a cheap one, just rare to hit a ball that high go that far. exit velocity was 100 mph and it carried 363 feet.
We have an official game.

I think the ASB will do the pen good. Let them get their rest and then when everyone back Mendoza can really get their roles defined as how to use everyone moving forward. They need to get their sea legs back a bit.

What a performance by Quintana!
Optimus-NY : 7/10/2024 7:13 am : link

103 pitches, 60 strikes
3.91 ERA
12 groundouts, 1 flyout
24 batters faced
1 HBP (Abrams)
Maton for essentially nothing is a nice move
KDavies : 7/10/2024 10:42 am : link
Lucchesi has a 4.20 ERA in AAA. Not exactly a big loss at all. They have Sevy, Quintana, Maenea, Scott, Peterson, and Senga coming back soon. Megill at AAA, along with Butto who can be stretched back out. That's 8 guys there. A Lucchesi type could always be gotten if needed.

DanMetroMan : 7/10/2024 10:48 am : link
Francisco Lindor's last 45 games:

.314/.375/.553, .928 OPS

18 2B, 9 HR, 26 RBI, 10-for-11 in stolen bases

Lindor's 3.1 fWAR in that span is the 4th-highest among all position players.
I would've kept Lucchesi ahead of Houser.
Optimus-NY : 7/10/2024 10:49 am : link
Lucchesi's just better and is a lefty. To me, this is Stearns valuing one of "his guys" over a holdover from the previous regime. Both of these guys are 31 and are gonna be free agents after the year. Houser shouldn't be asked back. Should've brought Lucchesi up instead of DFAing him. They could've at least used him in this quagmire of a bullpen.
man...I know no game is a "gimme" but..looking ahead at the schedule.

Does anyone else wish we had a a bit more of a challenge before the deadline?

I want to see how this team will match up with the teams projected to be in the playoffs before the ASB.

Not the marlins, Rockies, or a soft Yankees team.

I'm still unsure what to do at DL.

Braves and Minny that deadline week.

Schedule seems soft in August as well then gets difficult again in September.

Houser has been excellent as a reliever. in 30 innings he has a 2.4 era and a 3.6 fip. no way would i swap him for lucchesi.
Lucchesi
DanMetroMan : 7/10/2024 1:17 pm : link
had a 5.13 FIP (7th worst in the IL out of 31 pitchers, 6.78 K/9 30/31 with Syracuse) I wouldn't overthink this too much. He was bad in Syracuse and they obviously didn't think much of him.

I am fine with some ancillary type moves like Maton and just staying the course and see what happens. I think it's a reasonable position to both not want to sell as they have a realistic shot at the postseason, and not want to give up a bunch of valuable prospects to go "all-in."

Diaz is back. Senga will be back soon.

in the trevor williams multi-inning role he's fine. that role tends to only pitch in blow-outs and can saving innings from the rest of the group.

25 years old, rule 5 eligible, I mean if he can't succeed out of the bullpen then he's not a big leaguer. That's not to say he'd save the day but what's the downside? He's made 66 pro starts, they could always move him back if they were so inclined.

it is the beltran thing repeating, except somehow even more egregious. if he can stay healthy for just 3 more prime seasons exactly at his met averages, he will end up the 2nd most productive met ever - not counting any of his cleveland numbers.

notice he's played like half as many games as a met as many of the names he's about to pass on this list:
