Here we go again with another series thread. The Mets are back home for the first game of what will be a 6-game homestand before the four-day All-Star Break (July 15th to the 18th). The Mets finished their road trip to D.C. & the ‘Burgh with a record of 4-4 & are going to try and make hey these next 6 home games against the Nats and Rockies. The Mets are 5-2 against the Nationals so far this season, with 6 more games to go against them overall (including this 3-game series). All 6 of the remaining games against the Nats will be at Citi Field (the first 7 were played in D.C.). The last series with the Nats will take place during the stretch-run in mid-September. A series win here is much needed. Enjoy 😊!

-The Mets are back at .500 again with yesterday’s victory & are 6-2 overall against the Nats so far this season. The Mets are 4 games ahead of the Nats for 3rd place in the N.L. East, while still having two games in hand over them. Click HERE to see the standings within the division, as well as throughout MLB. The Mets are also 3 games behind the Cardinals for the last wildcard spot in the National League. Click HERE to see how the playoff picture in the National League looks as of the start of play today. The Mets play the Cardinals one last time on August 5th in St. Louis, in a make-up of a rained-out game from May. It’ll be the final game of the season between the two teams, with the Mets having won 3 of the first 5 against them so far this season. That game could be a potential tie-breaker, in case the two clubs finish the season deadlocked, so it’ll be something to keep our eyes on a little less than a month from now (after the trade deadline).

No reason this team shouldn't be able to go 44-28 and finish with 89 wins which should all but guarantee a playoff spot.
Just have to take it 1 series at a time and win the series.

Or…he just sucks. Like every other year he’s pitched. And a pitcher that can’t be pushed. Is ever other Met pitcher with a higher workload going to go on the IL?

Reed Garrett over the last 2 months,
23 appearances
2-3, 6.26 ERA, .287 AVG/.876 OPS against
Here's the key stat
On 0 or 1 days of rest:
0-2, 7.47 ERA, .297 AVG/.954 OPS against, 29.7% K, 13.5% BB
On 2+ days of rest:
7-1, 1.37 ERA, .200 AVG/.574 OPS against, 37.3% K, 10.9% BB
seems overworked/overexposed.
Overexposed? Sure.
But also - not a good pitcher.

Earnings over these five years, including this year, his last on the contract?
About 105 million...he's on the books for 25 million this year.
Nice work if you can find it...
This isn’t some great RP with a track record of success. He’s a mediocre/bad pitcher most of his career. He had a lucky month and a half - that’s it.
He started to fade on 5/22 - and he only pitched on back to back days three times through 5/22. And many times had 3 - 4 days rest between outings. This “overworked” thing is a convenient excuse, but I don’t see some poor pitcher that was abused.
MY point is that Stearns built such a poor BP that it left us with little options when some inevitable injuries happened. Garrett is just a poor pitcher that was reverting to the norm. At least, that’s my opinion.
Doing the "Jose" chant is NOT ok. Blasphemous. That belongs to the guy who is the best Mets SS in history (for at least a couple more years until Lindor accumulates enough time...lol)

My father told me the story of when the Yankees brought up this catcher named Lawrence Berra. Radio guy called him "Larrupin' Larry Berra." That had been Gehrig's nickname, Larrupin' Lou. So the guy ended up spending the rest of the broadcast apologizing for calling Berra "Larrupin' Larry."
Yogi was a better nickname anyway.
Cool story!! Thanks for sharing!

-Going into today, the Mets are half a game behind the Padres for the third Wildcard spot in the N.L. & only a game and a half behind the Cardinals for the second Wildcard spot. The Mets have won 10 of their last 12 games at Citi Field—scoring 6.92 runs per game during that period—and are looking to improve their losing record at home (23-25). Strangely enough, they’ve got a better record on the road (23-20) than they do at home.

Agreed. Good find by them. Torrens has a weird resume. '21 had 15 HR at the age of 25, but didn't get much play after that. Didn't know much about him, but certainly looks to be an improvement on Nido.
5-0 good guys.

Catcher is a position of strength both offensively and defensively.
Bench/spot starter guys like Taylor, Iglesias and Torrens seemingly provide minimal drop off from the regular guys they replace.
This team is fun and with Senga back, if the Mets solve these bullpen issues, they can be a real threat in the NL playoffs.
repost from yesterday, he is already the 8th most productive met by fwar, and with 1 more prime season he should get up to 4th. seems very likely to end his career 2nd or 3rd depending on whether or not lindor can leap frog him.

Yep, the rotation should be fine with Senga coming back.
The bullpen should be fine with maybe one majorish edition and another Maton type added, with Diaz already back and Maton and Butto added to the bullpen. An OF like Luis Robert may be a nice addition as well to take Stewart's place.

Being forced to spend all of 2017 in the majors as a Rule V pick despite never having played above South Atlantic League probably played a role. Nobody really knew what they had. Not saying he is a starter, but he definitely has more potential in a platoon role than some of the others we have trotted out.

agree all around but you buried the lede, the offense can rake with anyone in the NL. lindor, nimmo, jdm, alonso is as good of a top 4 as they've had since 99 or 06. and it's probably deeper in the bottom half. marte went out and it's barely noticeable.
their team defense continues to improve as well, probably in large part thanks to marte being out since he was the biggest negative. what started as a statistical negative in the first 2 months is now trending to a positive.

Didn't realize that one. Good info.
50 career high leverage innings with a 3.29 fip. 90 medium leverage. the velocity probably caps the ceiling but he is an experienced late game reliever and not ancient like diekman/otto. also more consistent with walks.

21.2 career innings in the playoffs 0.83 era
Priority bullpen wise would be Tanner Scott. Lefty. 1.42 ERA this year, 2.31 ERA last year. FA after this year. Would be instant set-up man. Would a Parada/Vasil package be enough?
Other guys I'd look at would with the Angels would be Carlos Estevez (pending FA), and old friend Hunter Strickland who is having a resurgence this year and could likely be had for a Maton type return (though has 42 appearances already)

Wow!
6th appearance in 11 days of july. 2 of them back to backs. was off yesterday though.
Ladies and gentleman, your active career post-season era leader amongst RP's (20 innings or more) Phil Maton (0.83). Nearly 1/2 a runner better than #2 (Tyler Matzek) #Mets
